Schubert
Quartet in i Major
1813,
of
This piece,written during November
old
years
sixteen
was
was composed when Schubert
first
and was his seventh string quartet. The
movement, Allegro moderato, opens with a theme
based on a three-note motive that will permeate
the entire work. Second is a brilliant Scherzo,
with a droning central trio section for contrast,
the whole played Prestissimo . After the gentle
and graceful slow movement,Adagio, cames the
finale, Allegro, built in part of passages in a
galloping rhythm which Schubert later used to
close many of his greatest works.
Lutoslawski
Quartet (1964)
Lutoslawski’s String Quartet, written in
1964, was commissioned by the Swedish Radio for
the 10th anniversary of a Stockholm concert
series. The formal progress of the work is arti–
culated such that what has gone before takes on,
in retrospect, the function of a prelude to what
succeeds it. Thus, the two movements have the
relationship to one another of introduction and
principle section. The violin solo which opens
the work appears at first to be the exposition
of a principle musical idea, until suddenly the
presentation of a more powerful figure indicates
this to be the real principle theme, converting
what has gone before into a brief introduction.
Brahms
Quartet in A Minor
The Quartets of Opus 51 date from the summer
of 1873. The A Minor Quartet is stern in expres–
sion, but not in an over–intellectual way. It is
extraordinarily unified, and particularly note–
worthy is the melodic material used so eloquently
by the composer. Each instrument is allowed its
characteristic expressivity, and the resultant
warmth and richness of color conveyed by Brahms
through his complete command of instrumental
resources, affords a sense of unity and fulfill–
ment quite unique in chamber music.

For though she be fair and fairer,
There is none so fair as she
In my heart.

[11. Upon a High Place

I stood upon a high place,
And saw, below, many devils
Running, leaping,
And carousing in sin.
One looked up, grinning,
And said: “Comrade! Brother!”

ABOUT THE PERFO RMER

Symphonie III, op. 28

. Louis Vierne
(18701937)

Prélude, Fugue et Variation

. César Franck
(18221890)

Allegro Maestoso

Three Pieces for Organ (2000)....
(Based on poetry of Stephen Crane)
I.  Black Riders

Black riders came from the sea.
There was clang and clang of spear and shield,
And clash and clash of hoof and heel,
Wild shouts and the wave of hair
In the rush upon the wind:
Thus the ride Sin.

II.  Here and There
I looked here;
I looked there:
Nowhere could I see my love.
And—this time—
She was in my heart.

Les oiseaux dans la Char mille (Doll Song).................................................]acques Offenbach
(18191880)
From Les Contes D’Hoffmann
The poet Hoffma nn has come to the house of the inventor Spalanzani to become his
Apprentice.  He falls in love with a lovely creature he meets there not realizing she is
a mechanical doll and a creation of this master.  Spalanzani introduces the doll at a
reception and speaks of her musical accomplishments.

How Could I Ever Know“?
from The Secret Garden

The musical is based on the novel of the same name written by Frances Burnett
It takes place in England, 1906. The main character Mary is sent to live with her Uncle
Archibald after her parents succumb to Cholera. Archibald’s wife, Lily, died years
before in childbirth, and left behind her husband and her son Collin, who has been
confined to bed as he is crippled. This particular song is sung at the very end of the
musical, before the finale. Archibald has left the home for the Continent. While he is

away, Mary is to be sent to a boarding school by Archibald’s brother Neville, who was
in love with Lily while she was alive and is now trying to take Archibald’s home from
him. Mary sends Archibald a letter urging him to come home. While he is debating
what he should do, Lily comes to him as a ghost and sings “How Could I Ever Know,
convincing him to return home.

Danse Macabre, op. 40 from Poéme Symphonique...................ccoeeuruunneen....... Camille Saint Saens
(18351921)
(Transcribed by the composer for piano duet)
Danse Macabre (Dance of Death) is the third of SaintSaéns’s four symphonic poems. The
image of Death as a fiddler is portrayed in this work. Death appears at midnight every year on
Halloween, and calls forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle.
The skeletons dance until the first break of dawn. With the cock’s crow, they must disperse and
vanish until next year. First performed in 1874, this work is based on a French poem by Henry
Cazalis, with the following English translation:
Zig,Zig,Zig Death in a cadence
Striking with his heel a tomb
Death at Midnight plays a dance tun e
Zig Zig Zig on his violin

The winter wind blows and the night is dark
Moans are heard in the linden trees
Through the gloom white skeletons pass
Running and leaping in their shrouds
Zig Zig Zig each one is frisking
The bones of the dancers are heard to crack
But hist of a sudden they quit the round
They push forward, they fly; the cock has crowed.

Ah!  Spietato! (Ah! Cruel One!)  .
from Amadigi

.

.

.

... George Frederic Handel
(16851759)

In this aria, Melissa, who is a sorceress, has caught
Amadigi trying to escape from her prison.  She is angered by the fact that Amadigi is not
moved by her affection.  Melissa makes him realize that he will pay for betraying her loving
soul.

n Gian Carlo Menotti
(b. 1911)

Act I  A fake séance has just taken place in the parlor room of the medium, Madame Flora’s
home. She becomes terrified when she feels a phantom hand clutching her throat and out of fear,
forces all guests to leave at once. Madame Flora blames their mute servant boy, Toby for
playing such a cruel joke on her. In order to calm her drunken nerves, her daughter, Monica
sings her this dark lullaby.

Composed in 1871, J eux d’Enfants (Children’s Games) is a set of twelve vignettes for piano,
four hands. A delightful collection that displays the composer’s homage to childhood, these

The  genesis  of  the  Cantate  de  Noel  dates  back to 1940 when Honegger was setting to
music  the  first  portion  oi‘  La  Passion de  Selzach as it was conceived by the poet, Caesa r
von  Arx,  which  began  with  the  episode  of  the Nativity of Christ.  “It is this pa rt of the
work,”  writes  the  composer,  “which  has  served  me as the basis for the Cantate de Noel,
not  without  undergoing  in  the  course  of  its  writing a nu mber of necessary changes.  The
first  chorus,  the  12th  Century  plainsong  Vent Emmanuel,  brings the anguished appeal of
humanity to  the Saviou r . ‘
In answer to this cry, the archangel announces to the shepherds the coming of the Messiah.
We  then hear Freu Dich, O Israel; the  16th  Century air,  Es Ist  Ein Reis Enlspmngen;  the
French  folksong,  ll Est Ne  Le Divin Enfant; Van Himmel Bach, Ikr Engelein Kommt; and the
famous  Die  Heilige  Nacht, melody  by  Franz  G ruber  — all intermingled and terminating in
Psalm 117, Laudate Dominum,.  An orchestral postlude concludes the work.
