Ushering  courtesy  of  Alpha  Phi  Ome �PR OGRAM  NOTES Tonight ’s  program  inc ludes  wind  and  pe rcussion  literatu re w ritten for  small  as well as la rge ensembles.  Tw o of the selections a re tran ­ sc riptions.  Gothic Suite  was  or iginally  wr itten to be played by  or ga n, piano  quartet  or  cello  ensemble  and has been transcribed for cl ar ine t choir  by  Dale  O.  Casteel.  Jack  Martin’s  jazz­styled compositi on for alto  saxophone  and  orchestra was transc ribed for band shortl y a fte r i t was p re miered by the  Bi ngha mton Symphony in 196 5. Contemporar y  Chambe r  Music  for  wind  instruments is repres en ted by two com posit ions of Vac lav N elh ybel, Im prom ptus  for Six  Wo odwinds and  Trio  fo r  Bras s,  together   wi th  Quartet fo r  Saxo ph on es   by Robe rt Li nn  and  Charts  Quintet  by  Hans  Ul rich  Staeps.  The latter  presents contemporar y music written for wind inst ruments of the antique  va riety. Mr.  Staeps,  one  of  the  leading  composers  of  recorder music,  w rites lyrical melodies, harmonized in the tertial  idiom. The  quartet  for  two  horns  and  two  bassoons  was w ritten in and was designed to be played at banquets in the court of Schwerin 17 54 . Th ree  Pi ec es for Par tia l Band is designedto  demonst rate the te and tonal capacities of the three instrumental families that a re cochnic al mbined to  produce the  organization  that  is  commonly refer red to as t he Wind Ensemble.  Of  the three pieces, the Ove rtu re f or Woodwinds is t int riguing.  The  thematic  material f or this work is derived f rohe most m three distinct  motives  that  are  presented one at a time in the ear ly  sections of  this  composition.  However,  what  creates  the  int rigue  me ntioned ea rlier  is  the  wa y  Mr.  Bi lik  has  used  the woodwind fami ly.   No t o nly does  this  family  have its own soprano, alto, tenor and bass vo ices, but each   subdivision  (with  the  exception  of  flutes  in  this particular cas e) has  the  same quality.  Bi lik has taken advantage of this situatio n in the early development of  his composition,  and  has purposely avoid ed  th is sa me  si tuation i n the later stages . From  1998­2003,  Mike  toured  the  world  with  Maynard  Ferguson’s­a Nouveau Band serving as a featured soloist a nd music d irector (2002­03 5“ summer of 2006 he was asked back by Mr. Ferguson to  join him on  a i e :. culminated at the famed Blue Note jazz club in NYC. Shortly thereafter Mik 132,, Maynard in studio and recorded what would be the trumpet legend’s final recording, The One and Only Maynard Ferguson.  . h’ Mike  has  performed  in  over  20  countries  including  Thailand,  Germ Azerbaijan, Israel, Australia, Russia and Sweden. In add ition, he has sh stage  with  Aretha  Franklin,  Phil  Woods,  Frankie  Valli,  The  Vangu. Marko served as drummer  and  arranger  tor Ferguson and his Big Bop Nouveau Band for three years. Marko ap pears on the Concord Recording “One  More  Trip  To  Birdland",  Born  in  Archbald,  Pennsylvania, Marcinko  studied  technique  with  drumming  master  Joe  Morello  and continued  his  training  at  the  University  of  Miami  where  he  studied classical,  jazz,  brazilian  and  at’rocuban  styles  under  professors  Fred Wickstrom, Steve Bagby, Steve Rucker, Harry Hawthorne and Ney Resaro. Over  the  years,  Marko has  played  with  jazz greats Joe  Henderson,  Phil Woods. Clark Terry, Bob Dorough, Red  Rodney, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Mulgrew Miller, Mike Stern. Tierney Sutton, Terrell Stafford and W ill Lee. Other notables Marcinko has worked with include: Jon Secada. Joan Rivers, Connie Francis, Don Rickles. Melba Moore, Juan Gabriel, Clay Aiken, Jay Leno,  Bob  Newhart and  Nicol  Williamson.  During  his years in the music industry, Marcinko has worked as a freelance musician playing drum set, percussion, piano/keyboards, bass guitar and trombone. He has also served as a studio session player, arranger, musical director and  producer  for  numerous  commercial  jingles,  indie­i’ilms  and  off­ broadway /  club and theater engagements. Currently, Marcinko tours and records  with jazz saxophone  icon and NEA  iazz master Dave Liebman. From the drum set, Maricle leads her big band The DIVA Jazz Orchestra and her quintet AVE PLAY. From carnegie Hall, she performs with The New York Pops and is also the orchestra's Director of Education. As a music director, Maricle works with acclaimed Broadway star Maurice Hines. As a teacher she runs a private drum set and percussion studio and is also a conductor for The New York Summer Festival. She is also a busy freelance performer and a published composer/arranger in both the classical and jazz mediums. With The DIVA Jazz Orchestra and FIVE PLAY she has performed at many of the world's most acclaimed music venues including: carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Tanglewood, the Kennedy Center, the Hollywood Bowl, and major jazz festivals throughout the United States and abroad. DIVA has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood, as well as numerous times on CNN Arts Break, and it was highlighted on The 25th Anniversary of the Kennedy Center Television Special and the NHK (Japan) Network's New York Jazz. Most recently DIVA is prominently featured in a documentary film entitled The Girls in the Band, scheduled for a 2009 premier. JENNIFER JANE LEITHAM has been referred to by noted jazz critic Leonard Feather as the "left-handed virtuoso of the upright bass." In addition to her successful performance career, Leitham has appeared on over 100 recordings with some of the giants of jazz music. In addition, she has recorded 7 highly acclaimed CDs of her own. Leitham is best known for her decade long stints with both Mel Torme and Doc Severinsen. She has appeared with many distinguished artists including Woody Herman, George Shearing, Gerry Mulligan, Peggy Lee, Joe Pass, Cleo Laine, Louie Bellson, Pete Rugolo, Bill Watrous, and numerous others. She has also been a member of the Tonight Show All-Stars, The Woody Herman Thundering Herd, Benny carter Quintet, Bob Cooper Quartet, DIVA, and more. A highly regarded educator, she is enthusiastically received as a presenter of workshops and clinics at schools and colleges around the country, and has joined the faculty at California State University Long Beach as a Studio Artist. MICHAEL J. CARBONE, director, is a native of Utica, New York. He moved to the Binghamton area in 1981 and is an instrumental music teacher in the Johnson City School district where he is Director of Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble at the middle school. He joined the Binghamton University music faculty in 1997 and serves as the Director of the Jazz Studies Program and a Director of the Harpur Jazz Ensemble. He holds a B.M.E. from the Crane School of Music and a M.M. from Binghamton University. Jennifer Leitham arr. by Scott Whitfield �ABOUTTHEPERFORMERS SHERRIE MARICLE is not only a jazz artist and composer, but a teacher and music director as well. From the drum set, Maricle leads her big band The DIVA Jazz Orchestra and her quintet FIVE PLAY. From Carnegie Hall, she performs with The New York Pops and is also the orchestra's Director of Education . As a music director, Maricle works with acclaimed Broadway star Maurice Hines. As a teacher she runs a private drum set and percussion studio and is also a conductor for The New York Summer Festival. She is also a busy freelance performer and a published composer/arranger in both the classical and jazz mediums. With The DIVA Jazz Orchestra and FIVE PLAY she has performed at many of the world's most acclaimed music venues including: Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Tanglewood, the Kennedy Center, the Hollywood Bowl, and major jazz festivals throughout the United States and abroad. DIVA has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood, as well as numerous times on CNN Arts Break, and it was highlighted on The 25th Anniversary of the Kennedy Center Television Special and the NHK (Japan) Network's New York Jazz. Most recently DIVA is prominently featured in a documentary film entitled The Girls in the Band, scheduled for a 2009 premier. JENNIFER JANE LEITHAM has been referred to by noted jazz critic Leonard Feather as the "left-handed virtuoso of the upright bass." In addition to her successful performance career, Leitham has appeared on over 100 recordings with some of the giants of jazz music. In addition, she has recorded 7 highly acclaimed CDs of her own. Leitham is best known for her decade long stints with both Mel Torme and Doc Severinsen. She has appeared with many distinguished artists including Woody Herman, George Shearing, Gerry Mulligan, Peggy Lee, Joe Pass, Cleo Laine, Louie Bellson, Pete Rugolo, Bill Watrous, and numerous others. She has also been a member of the Tonight Show All-Stars, The Woody Herman Thundering Herd, Benny Carter Quintet, Bob Cooper Quartet, DIVA, and more. A highly regarded educator, she is enthusiastically received as a presenter of workshops and clinics at schools and colleges around the country, and has joined the faculty at California State University Long Beach as a Studio Artist. He moved to the Binghamton area in 1981 and is an instrumental music teacher in the Johnson City School district where he is Director of Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble at the middle school. He joined the Binghamton University music faculty in 1997 and serves as the Director of the Jazz Studies Program and a Director of the Harpur Jazz Ensemble. He holds a B.M.E. from the Crane School of Music and a M.M. from Binghamton University. Carbone has performed with many well-known artists including Al Marino, Natalie Cole, Tommy Tune, Mel Torme, The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Danny D'Imperio's Big Band Bloviation, the Central New York Jazz Orchestra, and The Temptations. MICHAEL J. CARBONE, director, is a native of Utica, New York. �THE HARPUR JAZZ ENSEMBLE The Harpur Jazz Ensemble studies and performs big-band repertoire and appears frequently on and off campus. STEVE  DAVIS  is  widely  regarded  as  one  of  today’s  leading improvisors o n the trom bone.  His lyrical, ha rd­swinging st yle first gained him broad recognition during the 1 990’s while working with the bands of jazz legends Art Blakey, Jackie McLean, Chick Corea’s acclaimed sex tet Origin and the renowned cooperative sextet, One For All. Born in  Worcester. M A in  1 967, Steve was raised  in  Binghamton, N Y and graduat ed in  1989 from The Hartt School’s Jackie McL ean Institute  of  Jazz  (University  of  Hartford).  It  was  Mc  Lean’s guidence and recommendation that helped Davis land his first major gig  with  Art  Blakey  in  N YC  in  Dec  1989.  Steve  returned  to Hartford  in  1 992  to  join  Mc  Lean’s  sextet  and  begin  teaching alongside  his  mentor  at  both  the  Hartt  School  and  Artist’s Collective.  Davis has resided in Hartford ever since. In May 2006, Davi s presents his 9th CD as a leader, “Update ” (Criss Cross) which features the stellar line­up o f Peter Bernste in, Anthony Wonsey,  Nat  Reeves.  Joe  Farnsworth  and  special  guest  Roy Hargrove. Lately, Steve has been leading his own bands with more  frequency including an all­star quintet  featuring  Steve  Nelson.  Larry  Willis, Nat  Reeves  and  Joe  Farnsworth.  Davis  has  also  formed  a  new ( l quartet/quinte t  featuring risin g stars Dav id Bryant (piano), Dezron Douglas (bass ) and renowned drummer. Eric McPherson. On  occasion,  the  band  is  augmented  by  exciting,  frontline­mates Mike DiRubbo ­ alto sax and/or Ray Mc Morrin ­ tenor sax, Josh Evans ­ trumpet. Steve also continues to  perform and  record  with the  well­known, collective unit One For All ( feat. Eric Ale xander, Jim Rotondi,  David Hazelt ine, Peter  Washington, Nat  Reeves  or David Williams and Joe Farnsworth).  The band has recorded  11 CD’s  since  1997  for  Sharp  Nine,  Criss  Cross  and  Venus/Japan. Both  their  recordings  and  live performances  have  garnered rave reviews.  In 2006, Seco nd Floor Music will  be publishing One For All  sextet c harts in  t wo sets, as re corded o n  the group’s fi rst t wo CD’s. “Too Soon To Tell” (1 997) and “Opt imism” (1998) for Sharp Nine Records.
