Leroy B. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Petersburg, Virginia
This letter was enclosed in a 5.[5]” x 3” yellow/orange envelope, postmarked
DEC 20, WASHINGTON, DC. The postmark is 1” in diameter and is stamped
upside down in the top left portion of the envelope. The postmark did not
completely stamp. There is no stamp cancellation. There is evidence of stamp
glue residue in the upper left corner. The postmark is black ink.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Anny Wilcox
Smyrna
ChenangoCo
NY
The envelope was opened by tearing off the left side. Slightly stained along the
edges.
Two pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 4.5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Watermarked with ten horizontal lines. Embossed in the
upper left corners of page one and three, in the shape of a oval framed with palm
leaves and laurels. The legend contained in the oval is too faint to accurately
read. Ink appears unfaded. Very slight foxing, mostly along the single vertical
crease. There are two small (<1/8”) holes where the two horizontal creases cross
the vertical crease. Page four has a small (<1/4” diameter) black ink stain. There
are three creases: one vertical and two horizontal. Folded size is 4.5” x 3”.

Leroy B. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Maryland
This letter was enclosed in a 5.[5]” x 3.125” yellow/green envelope, postmarked
Feb 24, [64], BALTIMORE, MD. The postmark is 13/16” in diameter, blue ink.
Only a portion of the year stamped. The stamp has been removed, but there is a
slight discoloration in the upper right corner showing where it had been affixed.
There is no evidence of a stamp cancellation.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Anna Wilcox
Smyrna
Chenango Co
N
The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side. The tear removed part of
the ‘o.’ from ‘Chenango Co.’ and the ‘.Y.’ from ‘N.Y.’ Very slight foxing. There
is a brown stain of unknown origin along the left edge.
Written in blue ink, in a different hand, on the front:
Mr William S. Pike
Drum Sergeant
Fort No. 5 Baltimore
Maryland Company B
8 NY Artillery
Four pages.
One 7.875” x 9.625” sheet folded to form four 4.75” x 7.875” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Watermarked with nine horizontal lines. Embossed in the
upper left corners of page one and three, in the shape of an oval. Embossing too
indistinct for further description. Ink slightly faded. Very slight foxing, mostly
along the single vertical crease. Discoloration along the vertical crease may also
be staining related to the staining on the envelope. There are six creases: one
vertical and five horizontal. Folded size is 4.75” x 3.125”.

Leroy B. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Baleys Cross Roads, Virginia
This letter was enclosed in a 5.5” x 3” white envelope, postmarked JUN 23,
WASHINGTON, DC. The postmark is 1” in diameter and is stamped in the top
right portion of the envelope. The postmark did not completely stamp. There is
no stamp cancellation. There is evidence of stamp glue residue in the upper left
corner. The postmark is black ink.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Anna Willcox
Smyrna
Chenango Co
NY
The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side. The tearing removed part
of the final ‘o.’ in ‘Chenango Co.’ Tan staining on the right and upper right
portions of the envelope.
Two and one-half pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 4.5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on unlined stationery paper, page four appears to have
been unlined. Watermarked with eleven horizontal lines. Embossed in the upper
left corners of page one and three, in the shape of a oval framed with palm leaves
and laurels. The legend contained in the oval reads “PEQUOT MILLS.” Ink
appears unfaded. Very slight foxing, mostly along the more prominent of the two
vertical creases. There is tan staining along the free vertical edges, corresponding
to the staining on the envelope. Page four has a small (<1/4” diameter) black ink
stains. There are three creases: one vertical and two horizontal. Folded size is
4.5” x 2.75”.

Ruth Pike to her brother [Benjamin Stover]
Charlottville, New York
No envelope extant. This letter was likely in the same envelope as Letter 41.
One and one-half pages.
One 5.25” x 8” half sheet, cut, or carefully torn, from a wider [10”] sheet.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page two appears to
have been unlined. Embossed in upper left corner; too faint to discern.
Watermarked with eleven horizontal lines. Ink moderately faded. Very slight
foxing, especially along the two horizontal creases. There are two creases: both
horizontal. Folded size is 5.25” x 3”.

overlays the stamp. The stamp cancellation is very faint, consisting of [four
concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in diameter and the smallest is 3/16” in
diameter], and was stamp partially off the envelope. Both the postmark and the
cancellation are black ink.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Anna Wilcox
Smyrna
Shenango Co
NY
The envelope was opened by cutting the left side. The top of the envelope is torn
away, with the upper left corner missing. Slight foxing along the edges. There is
a tear running from the top, one-quarter inch to the left of the stamp, to within
one-half inch of the bottom of the envelope. The envelope has
staining/discoloration of unknown origin on both the back and front.
Three pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Embossed, in the upper right hand corners of pages one and
three, with a seal in the shape of a cameo. Watermarked with six horizontal lines.
The ink is slightly faded overall, very faded in spots. Moderate foxing, especially
along the one vertical and two horizontal creases. There are two very small
(<1/32”) holes where the two horizontal creases cross the single vertical crease.
The vertical crease is also torn, approximately 3/8”, at these points. Beige
staining on pages one and four; black staining on page two. There are three
creases: one vertical and two horizontal. Folded size is 5” x 2.75”.
