Pike to Anna Wilcox Posted from Fort McHenry, Baltimore Maryland This letter was enclosed in a 5.[5]” x 3” white envelope, postmarked Feb 27 ‘64, BALTIMORE, MD. The postmark is blurry, slightly faded, with portions of the print missing. The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter. The stamp has been cut from upper the right hand corner of the envelope, part of the cancellation remains. Both the postmark and the cancellation are blue ink. Addressed in black ink to: Miss Anna Wilcox Smyrna Shenango Ny The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side. This removed the ‘Co’ that likely followed ‘Shenango.’ There is very slight discoloration on the back of the envelope, with some blue ink staining from the postmark and cancellation of another letter. Three and one-half pages. One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages. Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to have been unlined. Embossed with an indiscernible impression in the upper left hand corners of pages one and three. Watermarked with ten horizontal lines. The ink of the letter is quite faded. No foxing evident. One pin-sized hole where the upper of the two horizontal creases crosses the single vertical crease. There is a 3/8” tear at the free end of the upper crease on page three/four. There are three creases: one vertical and two horizontal. The postmark, rather than the stamp cancellation, overlays the stamp. The postmark is incomplete, little is discernable other than the ‘2’ of the date and the abbreviation ‘MD.’ The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter. The stamp cancellation consists of four concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in diameter and the smallest is 3/16” in diameter. Both the postmark and the cancellation are blue ink. Pike to Anna Wilcox Posted from the Washington Street Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia. This letter was enclosed in a 5.5” x 3.125” yellow/cream colored envelope, with cancelled three cent stamp in the upper right hand corner of the envelope; postmarked Aug 5 ‘64, ALEXANDRIA, VA. The postmark is incomplete, with a portion of the top torn away. The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter and partly overlays the stamp. The stamp cancellation is very faint, consisting of [four concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in diameter and the smallest is 3/16” in diameter], and was stamp partially off the envelope. Both the postmark and the cancellation are black ink. Addressed in black ink to: Miss Anna Wilcox Smyrna Shenango Co NY The envelope was opened by cutting the left side. The top of the envelope is torn away, with the upper left corner missing. Slight foxing along the edges. There is a tear running from the top, one-quarter inch to the left of the stamp, to within one-half inch of the bottom of the envelope. The envelope has staining/discoloration of unknown origin on both the back and front. Three pages. One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages. Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to have been unlined. Embossed, in the upper right hand corners of pages one and three, with a seal in the shape of a cameo. Watermarked with six horizontal lines. The ink is slightly faded overall, very faded in spots. Moderate foxing, especially along the one vertical and two horizontal creases. There are two very small (<1/32”) holes where the two horizontal creases cross the single vertical crease. The vertical crease is also torn, approximately 3/8”, at these points. Beige staining on pages one and four; black staining on page two. There are three creases: one vertical and two horizontal. The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter, is partly stamped off the envelope, and partly overlays the stamp. The stamp cancellation is stamped partly off the envelope, consisting of four concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in diameter and the smallest is 3/16” in diameter. Slight foxing along the edges. The envelope has a stain of unknown origin along the right edge, it extends into the envelope approximately one-half inch on the front and three-quarters inch on the back. The upper left edge of the back has a black stamp cancellation stamped partly off the envelope, the lower third of the cancellation is faded/missing. Three pages. One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages. Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to have been unlined. Embossed, in the upper right hand corners of pages one and three, with a seal in the shape of a shield surmounted by a crown with a banner below. Watermarked with eight horizontal lines. Ink appears unfaded. Very slight foxing. Staining along the vertical crease: this is from the same time and source as the staining on the envelope. There is an ink stain on page three from where WSP scribbled out a word. The scribbling bled through to page four. Pike to Anna Wilcox Washington Street Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia This letter was enclosed in a 5[.5]” x 3.125” white envelope, with cancelled three cent stamp in the upper right hand corner of the envelope; postmarked Sep 6 ‘64, ALEXANDRIA, VA. The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter and is partly stamped off the envelope. The stamp cancellation is moderately faded, consisting of four concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in diameter and the smallest is 3/16” in diameter. Both the postmark and the cancellation are black ink. Addressed in black ink to: Miss Annie Wilcox Smyrna Shenango Co N.Y The envelope was opened by cutting the left side, only 5 inches of the envelope remain. Moderate foxing along the edges and both faces. The back of the envelope has four very faded lines, in pencil, written in a different handwriting from the address on the front: One [?] Pound [?] [?] One 2 pound and three ounces One 1 pound and [?] One [?] pound and three ounces Three pages. One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages. Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to have been unlined. Embossed, in the upper right hand corners of pages one and three, with a seal in the shape of a oval containing the word “PARIS” and surrounded by filigree. Watermarked with nine horizontal lines. Ink slightly faded. Moderate foxing, especially along the single vertical crease. There are three creases: one vertical and two horizontal.
