Alan Hovhaness

Virail Thomson offered an extremely perceptive estimate of the
talents of Alan Hovhaness when he wrolc in the New York
Herald Tribune on February 8, 1947 :
" He writes in the early Christian, the medieval and the mod •
ern Armenian techniques, possibly even a little in 1hc pre-Chris1ian manner of that ancient and cultivated people. He observes
the ancient rules and imitates wi1h m o dviolins
e r na sizeable
selection of near-Eastern stringed instruments. He even extends
the orienta l grammar or composition to include, as it may well
have done in Greek times, held notes against which florid melodics expand al ease and even quintal counterpoin1
"It remains oriental and classical, nevcr1hcless, in structure.
The music is at times strophic in phraseology and emo tionally
con1inuous, never climactic . Each piece is like a long roll of
hand-made wall paper. hs mo1ionless quality is a lillle hypnotic.
There is resemblance here , too , 10 the early urcmonial pieces
of Erik Sa1ie - 1he 'Mass For The Poor', the ' Prelude To The
Heroic Gate o f Heaven ·, and 1he Rosicrucian Fanfares. Its expressive function is predominantly religious, ceremonial, incantory, its spiritual co n1cn1 of the purcsl . 11 is oriental fro m
1hc right side o f the railway track."
The music of Alan Hovhaness has developed richly in lhe eleven
years since Mr. Thomson penned this tribute and yet it is still
essentially serviceable in pin -pointing the strangely beautiful, individu :11 gift of this composer. One or two points no longer seem
accurate - as, for example, the estimate 1ha t Mr. Hovhancss'
music is "never climactic''. Mr . Hovhaness has moved o n from
there, hut 1hc overall approach noted hy Mr. Thomson remains
1hc same.
The composer's "orientalism " ( in no way to be confused with
the term so often appl ie d to the techniques o r ma ny Russian mu,icians from Glinka o n ) has no qua lity of faddism about i1. T o
begin wi1h , it is part o f his heritage through his Armenian father .
( He was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, where his father was
a chem is1ry professo r. His mother was of Sco11ish extraction.)
Although he wasraised in a 1horo ughly American background
and even resisted, as a child, whatever a11emp1s h is father made
10 help him iden1i(y with his cullural legacy, Mr. Hovhanen
eventually came 10 ii as his love of old music, art , and a rchitecture developed antiquari a n tastes. H is stud ies o f ancienl Armenian (and later 0 1hcr near-Eastern and 1hen Easle rn ) c uhure
were given impetus when he became organist in Boston's Armen fan church and was exposed 10 the occasio nall y ageless modes
and monody of traditional liturgical Armenian music.
The " orientalism" was a hard-won, carefully -tho ught-out expres1ion, 100. Mr. Hovhaness was trained in music in Boston in the
usual s1rict , academic fashion. He s1 udied piano wilh Adelaide
Proctor and Heinrich Gebhard , composition at the Conservatory under Frederick Converse. By the early " Thirties (when
he wa.5 in his early twenties), he had already composed an impressive body of music which had drawn not a little admiration
in Boston music circles. His spiritual mentor seemed to be Sibelius and his mu.sic supposedly was marked by "a pronou nced
Finnish accent ". He traveled off to Finland at one point and
af1er his return seemed even mo re destined to become some1hing of "the America n Sibelius" . And , then he took serious
stock of himself, undoub1edl y aided in his dec ision by his growing interest in Eastern c ul1urc . He decided to destroy all o f his
music up to that time - a diffic ult decision, one imagines, since
this material included no less than two ambitious symphonies
and several full-length operas, over a thousand wo rks in all.
The destruction was ruthless and complete : little trace o r this
music exists now.
Then began the serious study of Oriental styles and techniques,
the experimentation wilhin these styles and techniques, and 1hc
attempt to fuse them with certain traditional forms or our own
music. There was necessary, 100, a period of "digestion",
in
which the materia of oriental music could be bsorbcd and
blended so that, say, a mode (rom Armenian so urces might be
blended with a rhythmical structure from Ind ia n sources for
working within a classicalwestern canonic form. Mr. Hovhaness'
success at his task is exemplified impressively by 1he music
which has resulted (rom hi• work . Few composers today seem
so capable so consistently of making music of such real beauty,
such intense personal expressiveness, such profc;>und spiritual
effect.

NOTES ON THE MUSIC
Sonatina in G Minor

Franz Schubert composed three violin works commonly called the
“sonatinas” during the spring of 1816 when he was 19 years of age.

Schubert called these works sonatas, and they remained in manuscript
form during his lifetime. When Anton Diabelli published them in 1836,

he named them sonatinas in order t o a cquire the amateur market.

These works are straightforward, beautiful and elegant and have
remained a favorite with violinists and pianists since Schubert and his
friends first performed them. The Sonatina in G Minor is dramatic and
lyrical and the dialogue between the violin and piano is fun.

Voices of the Woods
Felix FernandezMadrid, a friend and colleague who has a great love for
usic, commissioned Seven Piano Pieces in 1984. He wanted a set of
piano pieces for his musical interests and enjoyment. “Voices of the
Woods”, the fifth piece of the set, conveys the restlessness and
sometimes forbidding nature of a mysterious forest.
Homages and Fantasies is a set of eight piano pieces premiered in
Ithaca on November 19, 2011. The following two works are extracted
from this set.
In Memoriam: Jamie Cannon
Jamie Cannon was a great friend. We were roommates when I lived in
downtown Detroit. He was an exceptional artist and craftsman, and
with my compositional work and Jamie’s artwork, producti vity in the
apartment was significant. When I received the news of his passing, I
sa t down i n sorrow to remember him and to pay homage to him. This
piece came forth. Throughout the composition there are moments of
reflection and remembrance interrupted by sudden bursts of anguish.

In Memoriam. ends with the main theme modulated up a step and
continuing upward to an enigmatic resolution.
Homage to Steven Stucky
In this homage to one of the foremost American composers, I set out to
honor his vibrant palette of harmonic coloration, while main taining my

own musical energy. The piec e is i n a standard ternary form. The fi rs t

part exhibits extended triadic harmony, which is one of Stucky’s
hallmarks, and the middle sec tion displays a musical portrai t of Steven
Stucky’s name. I have had the pleasure of working with Steven Stucky
and felt this set of Homages and Fantasies wouldn’t be complete
without honoring him.

Inner Lights

l composed Inner Lights (Sonata for Violin and Piano) in 2012. It

portrays the act of revealing the Light within us. The following quote
served as inspiration:
“The Light that is begotten of the Life which has been begotten of

Love, is a radiance: i t is the radiance within with a soul. Light is the
effect of magnetic action; i t is a manifestation of magnetic power.”
Life ’s Mysteries Unveiled by John Todd Ferrier

Lento reflectivo, Allegro assai, Allegro
The opening theme stated by the violin, represents the dual motion

(ascending and descending) of Light from the Divine, as well as a call to

the Light within each of us. When the piano joins the call, harmony
ensues. The fast, jagged rhythms signal a transition t o daytoday
activities that interrupt harmony. The contra sting music that follows in
5/4 time is lyrical and hopeful, encouraging continued effort on the
path of spiritual initiation. After a return to the theme of ra pid music,
the movement ends with a quote of the original opening theme.
Flowing
This movement begins with an intricate passage by the piano, which
provides the sound palette for the high floating melody of the violin.
The melodic stream i s contemplative and serene. An agitated middle
section suspends the medita tive a ttributes of this movement, but the

music soon returns to the flowing lines of the beginning.
Allegro
The final movement is a celebration of joy and grati tude. The violin ’s
firs t theme has the feeling of exuberance, and the highspirited energy

is maintained throughout the movement ’s several connected thema tic

sections.

I love your eyes, I love your face,

Das Veilchen
A violet grew in the meadow, bent
over and unrecognized,
It was a lovable violet . A young
shepherdess came by with a light
step and cheerful mood, through
the meadow, and she sang.
The violet thought, “Ah, i f only I
were the prettiest flower in all of
Nature,
just for a li ttle while, until that
darling would pick me and press
me fla t on her bosom, ah, just for
a quarter hour. ”
But a h, the girl came and did not

notice the violet.
She trampled the poor violet!
It sank down and died, and yet it

was happy :
“If I must die, at least I am killed
by her feet . ”
The poor violet! It was a lovable

violet.

But alas, the man who wrote you,

Als Luise die Briefe

may perhaps burn for a long time

Born of a fiery imagination,

The Vera Beaudin Saeedpour Kurdish Library and Museum Collection was donated to Binghamton University Libraries in February 2011. The evolution of the library/museum is evident through her correspondences with politicians, universities, Kurdish friends, writers, and people of all different backgrounds. The collection contains more than 3,000 books, journals and newspapers in Kurdish and other languages. The collection also holds artifacts, costumes, maps, photographs, artwork and other unique materials. Items include a nineteenth-century traveler's account of Kurdistan, nineteenth-century maps, jewelry including necklaces, headpieces, bracelets, and belts, musical instruments and recorded music, as well as weavings, crafts, carpets and other textile art. Saeedpour also established numerous events to celebrate different aspects of the Kurdish culture. Photographs and records from these events can be found throughout the collection.

Vera Beaudin Saeedpour Kurdish Library & Museum Collection Finding Aid</text>

accompanist to the great virtuoso Heinrich Baermann, with wh

throughout Europe in the period 181216. This F minor concert
o was the first
written in the new ‘Romantic’ style, with extremes of range, d

used to heighten the tragic emotional theme of the work.

Dan Zaccharini, Brenna Daugherty and Christa Heschke

Jacques Bouffil created the first sets of original clarinet trios for
use of
players in early 19"®century Paris. Each of the eight trios has three
movements,
highly virtuosic writing for all three parts, and a decidedly clas

reminiscent of Mozart and Haydn.

Gregg Ackerman & Margaret Reitz

Milhaud contributed several important solo works for clarinet
which draw
on French, Brazilian and American models, as all were places i
n which he resided
and taught during his long career. Scaramouche, (the name is fro

by Rafael Sa batini published in 1921) was originally composed
for saxophone, but
was immediately transcri bed by the compose r and published for

The pure tone of the clarinet lends itself wonderfully to the cou

Baroque music. Eugene Gay, former Professor of Clarinet at the
Conservatoire de

Yvonne Desportes (19071993) was one of the most respected

composers of clarinet chamber music in the latter 20” century. Thi

‘characters of the village ’ is the first of three. Desportes delights
in witty and
