William S. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Washington Street Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia
This letter was enclosed in a 5.[25]” x 3” white envelope, with a cancelled three
cent stamp in the upper left corner; postmarked Jan 24, ALEXANDRIA, VA.
The postmark is 15/16” in diameter and overlays the stamp. The stamp
cancellation consists of four concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in diameter and
the smallest is 3/16” in diameter. The postmark and stamp cancellation are black
ink.
Addressed in blue ink to:
Miss Annie Wilcox
Smyrna
Chenango C[o]
N.Y.
The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side. The tear removed the ‘o’
from ‘Chenango Co.’ Very slight foxing along the edges. The envelope is very
yellowed. This is a light tan stain, probably water, along the top edge of the
envelope, above the cancellation.
Three pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in blue ink on unlined stationery paper. Ink appears unfaded.
Very slight foxing. There is one small (<1/16”) hole where the lower of the two
horizontal creases crosses the single vertical crease. There are three creases: one
vertical and two horizontal. Folded size is 5” x 2.875”.

Emory Wilcox to Anna Wilcox
Fort Federal Hill, Baltimore, Maryland.
This letter was enclosed in a 5.[25]” x 2.875” white envelope, with a cancelled
three cent stamp in the upper right corner; postmarked Ma[y] 4, BALTIMORE.
The postmark is 1.25” in diameter, blue ink, and overlays the stamp. The upper
left corner is occupied by an illustration of Fort Federal Hill in black ink. Printed,
in black ink, below the illustration:
FORT FEDERAL HILL, Baltimore, Md.

Garrisoned by 8th N. Y. Artillery,
Col. P. A. PORTER, commanding.
Addressed in blue ink to:
Miss Annie W
Smyrna
Chenango
N.
The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side. The tear removed the right
half of the stamp and postmark. Also torn off are most of the name ‘Wilcox,’ the
‘Co.’ from ‘Chenango Co.’ and the ‘Y’ from ‘N.Y.’ Very slight foxing along the
edges. There are blue ink stains on the back, probably from postmarks on other
letters.
Written in black ink, in a different hand, on the back:
Smyrna
June 10
Two and one-half pages.
One 7.5” x 9” sheet folded to form four 4.5” x 7.5” pages.
Written in two distinct black inks on blue lined stationery paper, page four
appears to have been unlined. The top of page one has “Co.B. 8th N.Y.Art.”
printed in black ink. The ink changes halfway down page two. The earlier ink is
more faded than the later ink. Very slight foxing, mostly along the single vertical

crease. The lower third of pages 3/4 has been cut away. There are three creases:
one vertical and two horizontal. Folded size is 4.5” x 2.625”.

I enlisted and then I
had the mumps
Russel wrote to
me that Ona had gone
home with Uncle Ben so
I wrote her a letter a day
or two before I received
yours and directed it to
Smyrna
We have been
relieved at Patterson Park
the convalescents doing their
own guard duty there
is considerable activity
in this department at
the present time I do
not think the rebels
will attempt to take
this city if they would
I think they would have
a fine time in getting

back to Virginia. if they
should take the city
which is very doubtful
they would not hold
it long and the time
taken for them to come
here would give us time
to get ready for them
What so people
think about the war
about Smyrna Yesterday

at the Relay house about
10 miles from here
No more at present

Leroy B. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Maryland
This letter was enclosed in a 5.[5]” x 3.125” yellow/green envelope, postmarked
Feb 24, [64], BALTIMORE, MD. The postmark is 13/16” in diameter, blue ink.
Only a portion of the year stamped. The stamp has been removed, but there is a
slight discoloration in the upper right corner showing where it had been affixed.
There is no evidence of a stamp cancellation.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Anna Wilcox
Smyrna
Chenango Co
N
The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side. The tear removed part of
the ‘o.’ from ‘Chenango Co.’ and the ‘.Y.’ from ‘N.Y.’ Very slight foxing. There
is a brown stain of unknown origin along the left edge.
Written in blue ink, in a different hand, on the front:
Mr William S. Pike
Drum Sergeant
Fort No. 5 Baltimore
Maryland Company B
8 NY Artillery
Four pages.
One 7.875” x 9.625” sheet folded to form four 4.75” x 7.875” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Watermarked with nine horizontal lines. Embossed in the
upper left corners of page one and three, in the shape of an oval. Embossing too
indistinct for further description. Ink slightly faded. Very slight foxing, mostly
along the single vertical crease. Discoloration along the vertical crease may also
be staining related to the staining on the envelope. There are six creases: one
vertical and five horizontal. Folded size is 4.75” x 3.125”.

Leroy B. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Fort No. 7, Baltimore, Maryland
This letter was enclosed in a 5.[25]” x 2.875” white envelope, with a cancelled
three cent stamp in the upper left corner: postmarked [Apr] 5, [64],
BALTIMORE, MD. The postmark is 13/16” in diameter and overlays the stamp.
The date did not completely stamp. The stamp cancellation consists of four
concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in diameter and the smallest is 3/16” in
diameter. The postmark and stamp cancellation are blue ink.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Anna Willcox
Smyrna
Chenango Co
New York
The envelope was opened by cutting off the right side. Slight foxing, especially
along the edges. There two small brown stains of unknown origin along the left
edge. The back of the envelope has blue ink stains, probably from the postmarks
of other letters.
Three pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Watermarked with eleven horizontal lines. Embossed in the
upper left corners of page one and three, in the shape of an oval containing the
legend ‘E.H.OWEN.’ Very slight foxing, mostly along the single vertical crease.
There are two moderate (<1/4”) holes where the two horizontal creases cross the
single vertical crease. There are three creases: one vertical and two horizontal.
Folded size is 5” x 2.875”.
