William S. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Posted from Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Maryland.
This letter was enclosed in a 5.[5]” x 3” white envelope with cancelled three cent
stamp in the upper right hand corner of the envelope; postmarked Jan 19 ‘64,
BALTIMORE, MD. The postmark runs off the top of the envelope and not all the
characters are complete. The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter. The stamp
cancellation consists of four concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in diameter and
the smallest is 3/16” in diameter. Both the postmark and the cancellation are blue
ink.

The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side, this removed the ‘o’ which
likely followed the ‘C’ in ‘Shenango C.’

�There is a black, possibly ink, semicircular stain on the top front of the envelope
and a quarter inch long tear at the bottom, near the center. There is also some
blue ink staining likely from the postmark of another letter on the back of the
envelope. Slight foxing at the edges. Seven pin-holes in an oval pattern, six
defining the oval with one in the center, were punched, from the front, through the
envelope three-quarters inch from the bottom and one and one-eighth inch from
the left edge. The pin-holes must have been done at a time when the letter was
not in the envelope: the letter contains no pin-holes.

One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. The blue lines of the paper are almost completely faded away,
the ink the letter was written in is also quite faded. Slight foxing. A black ink
stain appears on the top of page one, a portion of this stain has soaked through to
page two. There are two very small (<1/32”) holes where the two horizontal
creases cross the single vertical crease. There are three creases: one vertical and
two horizontal. Folded size is 5” x 2.75”.

William S. Pike to Annie Wilcox.
Posted from Fort Federal Hill, Baltimore, Maryland.
No envelope extant.
Three and one-half pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue-lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Embossed with a seal in the upper left hand corners of pages
one and three. The seal is in the shape of a shield containing three circles
separated by a chevron, the chevron contains the word “CARSON’S.” The blue
lines of the paper are quite faded. Ink appears unfaded. Moderate foxing. Some
dark gray staining of unknown origin appears in the upper third, center, of page
one. There are two small (< 1/16”) holes where the two horizontal creases cross
the single vertical crease and slight tears at the free ends of the horizontal creases
of page one/two. There are three creases: one vertical and two horizontal.
Folded size is 5” x 2.75”.
