She was on various TV shows including The Mod Squad, Room 222, All in the Family, and The Partridge Family. Near is the founder of an independent recording label called Redwood Records. She was recognized for her work as in social change by receiving honors from the ACLU, the National Lawyers Guild, the National Organization for Women, NARAS, Ms. Magazine and the Legends of Women's Music Award. She attended UCLA for a year, then moved to New York to study vocal music and dance.
