Biographical Text
Sam Smith is a writer, activist, and social critic who has been at the forefront of new ideas and new politics for more than four decades. The Harvard University graduate, class of 1959, has been editing alternative publications since 1964. He is an award-winning alternative journalist and currently is editor of Progressive Review. His activism helped organize the Association of State Green Parties-predecessor to the National Green Party and, in the 1970s, was a co-founder of the DC Statehood Party. He is the author of several books including his most recent titled Why Bother? Getting a Life in a Locked Down Land and a 1990's popular book titled His Shadows of Hope: A Free Thinker's Guide To Politics in the Time of Clinton. This native Washingtonian covered his first story in 1957 as a 19-year-old. He has served on the Board of the Fund For Constitutional Government; the DC United Black Fund; Project on Government Oversight and the DC NAACP Police & Justice Task Force.
