Biographical Text
Jerome "Jerry" Raik graduated from Harpur College in 1967 with a degree in Theater. Following graduation, he joined the Peace Corps and served in South Korea. Over the course of his career, Jerry worked in a variety of fields, including teaching English as a Second Language and activity therapy in a psychiatric hospital. He later devoted significant time to raising his three children as a primary daytime caregiver. His involvement in family and community life led to a deep commitment to Jewish education. Today, he serves as Director of the Havurah School at Ansche Chesed on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, where elementary school students explore Jewish subjects through arts-based learning.
Dr. Barrie Raik, a Harpur College alumna, graduated in 1967 before joining the Peace Corps, where she served in South Korea alongside her future husband, Jerry. After returning to the United States, she worked as a computer programmer before completing additional science coursework and pursuing medicine. She earned her medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine and completed a residency in Internal Medicine. Throughout her career, Dr. Raik practiced and held positions at Weill Cornell Medicine and Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. She and Jerry raised three children while balancing their professional and family lives.
