As a student at Harvard, he wrote for the Harvard Crimson. Underhill moved to Mobile, Alabama as a reporter for the Southern Courier, a newspaper founded in 1965, to cover civil rights news in the Deep South. He has held numerous positions including working on organizing and activist campaigns.
