William S. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Posted from Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Maryland.
This letter was enclosed in a 5.[5]” x 3” white envelope with cancelled three cent
stamp in the upper right hand corner of the envelope; postmarked Jan 19 ‘64,
BALTIMORE, MD. The postmark runs off the top of the envelope and not all the
characters are complete. The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter. The stamp
cancellation consists of four concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in diameter and
the smallest is 3/16” in diameter. Both the postmark and the cancellation are blue
ink.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Anna Wilcox
Smyrna
Shenango C
Ny
The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side, this removed the ‘o’ which
likely followed the ‘C’ in ‘Shenango C.’
Also written in black ink:
Front of envelope has one addition problem:
40
30
340
and one multiplication problem:
40
30
40
120
1240
Back of envelope has a single line:
[unreadable character]) 1 [reverse comma] 2 4 0 (1 [reverse comma] 2 4 0
Ect,

There is a black, possibly ink, semicircular stain on the top front of the envelope
and a quarter inch long tear at the bottom, near the center. There is also some
blue ink staining likely from the postmark of another letter on the back of the
envelope. Slight foxing at the edges. Seven pin-holes in an oval pattern, six
defining the oval with one in the center, were punched, from the front, through the
envelope three-quarters inch from the bottom and one and one-eighth inch from
the left edge. The pin-holes must have been done at a time when the letter was
not in the envelope: the letter contains no pin-holes.

Three pages with a note on the fourth page.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. The blue lines of the paper are almost completely faded away,
the ink the letter was written in is also quite faded. Slight foxing. A black ink
stain appears on the top of page one, a portion of this stain has soaked through to
page two. There are two very small (<1/32”) holes where the two horizontal
creases cross the single vertical crease. There are three creases: one vertical and
two horizontal. Folded size is 5” x 2.75”.

Leroy B. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Maryland
This letter was enclosed in a 5.[5]” x 3.125” yellow/green envelope, postmarked
Feb 24, [64], BALTIMORE, MD. The postmark is 13/16” in diameter, blue ink.
Only a portion of the year stamped. The stamp has been removed, but there is a
slight discoloration in the upper right corner showing where it had been affixed.
There is no evidence of a stamp cancellation.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Anna Wilcox
Smyrna
Chenango Co
N
The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side. The tear removed part of
the ‘o.’ from ‘Chenango Co.’ and the ‘.Y.’ from ‘N.Y.’ Very slight foxing. There
is a brown stain of unknown origin along the left edge.
Written in blue ink, in a different hand, on the front:
Mr William S. Pike
Drum Sergeant
Fort No. 5 Baltimore
Maryland Company B
8 NY Artillery
Four pages.
One 7.875” x 9.625” sheet folded to form four 4.75” x 7.875” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Watermarked with nine horizontal lines. Embossed in the
upper left corners of page one and three, in the shape of an oval. Embossing too
indistinct for further description. Ink slightly faded. Very slight foxing, mostly
along the single vertical crease. Discoloration along the vertical crease may also
be staining related to the staining on the envelope. There are six creases: one
vertical and five horizontal. Folded size is 4.75” x 3.125”.

26 February, 1864
William S. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Posted from Fort McHenry, Baltimore Maryland
This letter was enclosed in a 5.[5]” x 3” white envelope, postmarked Feb 27 ‘64,
BALTIMORE, MD. The postmark is blurry, slightly faded, with portions of the
print missing. The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter. The stamp has been cut from
upper the right hand corner of the envelope, part of the cancellation remains.
Both the postmark and the cancellation are blue ink.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Anna Wilcox
Smyrna
Shenango
Ny
The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side. This removed the ‘Co’
that likely followed ‘Shenango.’ There is very slight discoloration on the back of
the envelope, with some blue ink staining from the postmark and cancellation of
another letter.
Three and one-half pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Embossed with an indiscernible impression in the upper left
hand corners of pages one and three. Watermarked with ten horizontal lines. The
ink of the letter is quite faded. No foxing evident. One pin-sized hole where the
upper of the two horizontal creases crosses the single vertical crease. There is a
3/8” tear at the free end of the upper crease on page three/four. There are three
creases: one vertical and two horizontal. Folded size is 5” x 2.75”.

Leroy B. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Fort No. 7, Baltimore, Maryland
This letter was enclosed in a 5.[25]” x 2.875” white envelope, with a cancelled
three cent stamp in the upper left corner: postmarked [Apr] 5, [64],
BALTIMORE, MD. The postmark is 13/16” in diameter and overlays the stamp.
The date did not completely stamp. The stamp cancellation consists of four
concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in diameter and the smallest is 3/16” in
diameter. The postmark and stamp cancellation are blue ink.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Anna Willcox
Smyrna
Chenango Co
New York
The envelope was opened by cutting off the right side. Slight foxing, especially
along the edges. There two small brown stains of unknown origin along the left
edge. The back of the envelope has blue ink stains, probably from the postmarks
of other letters.
Three pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Watermarked with eleven horizontal lines. Embossed in the
upper left corners of page one and three, in the shape of an oval containing the
legend ‘E.H.OWEN.’ Very slight foxing, mostly along the single vertical crease.
There are two moderate (<1/4”) holes where the two horizontal creases cross the
single vertical crease. There are three creases: one vertical and two horizontal.
Folded size is 5” x 2.875”.

William S. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Posted from Fort No. 5, Baltimore, Maryland
This letter was enclosed in a 5.25” x 2.875” white envelope with cancelled three
cent stamp in the upper left hand corner of the envelope; postmarked Apr 1[8]
‘64, BALTIMORE, MD. The postmark, rather than the stamp cancellation,
overlays the stamp. The postmark is incomplete, with some characters missing
entirely and portions missing from all characters present. The postmark is 1 3/16”
in diameter. The stamp cancellation consists of four concentric circles, the largest
is 3/4” in diameter and the smallest is 3/16” in diameter. Both the postmark and the
cancellation are blue ink.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Anna Wilcox
Smyrna
Shenango Co
NY
The envelope was opened by cutting the left side. Foxing/staining along most of
bottom edge. There is blue ink staining on both the front and back of the
envelope, likely from the postmarks and cancellations of other letters.
Three pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on unlined stationery paper. Watermarked with
eleven horizontal lines. The ink is slightly faded. Very slight foxing. There are
two small (<1/8”) holes where the two horizontal creases cross the single vertical
crease. There are three creases: one vertical and two horizontal. Folded size is
5” x 2.75”.

William S. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Posted from Fort No.5, Baltimore, Maryland
This letter was enclosed in a 4.25” x 2.5” white envelope, with cancelled three
cent stamp in the upper left hand corner of the envelope; postmarked [May] 2
[‘64, BALTIMORE], MD. The postmark, rather than the stamp cancellation,
overlays the stamp. The postmark is incomplete, little is discernable other than the
‘2’ of the date and the abbreviation ‘MD.’ The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter.
The stamp cancellation consists of four concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in
diameter and the smallest is 3/16” in diameter. Both the postmark and the
cancellation are blue ink.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Anna Wilcox
Smyrna
Shenango Co
NY
The envelope was opened by cutting the left side. Slight foxing along the edges.
There is blue ink staining on the back of the envelope, likely from the postmarks
and cancellations of other letters. The center circle of the cancellations has been
traced in pencil and the symbol
has been drawn twice in pencil along with
one like this
.
The back of the envelope is addressed in pencil to, in different handwriting than
on the front:
Anna E. Willcox
Smyrna
Chenango
County
NY
Three and one-half pages.
One 6.5” x 8” sheet folded to form four 4” x 6.5” pages.

Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Watermarked with eight vertical lines. The ink is slightly
faded. Very slight foxing. There are three creases: one vertical and two
horizontal. Folded size is 4” x 2.375”.

cent stamp in the upper right hand corner of the envelope; postmarked May 14
‘64, BALTIMORE, MD. The postmark is incomplete, with portions of the central

The envelope was opened by cutting the left side. Slight foxing along the edges.
There is blue ink staining on the back of the envelope, likely from the postmarks
and cancellations of other letters. There is a black ink stain over the lower right
corner of the stamp. The upper right corner of the envelope is torn.
Three pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Embossed, in the upper right hand corners of pages one and
three, with a seal in the shape of a shield surmounted by a crown with a banner
below. Watermarked with eight horizontal lines. The ink is slightly faded. Very
slight foxing, only along the single vertical crease. There are three creases: one
vertical and two horizontal. Folded size is 5” x 2.75”.
