The celebrated Austrian theater director <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/libraries/about/special-collections/research-and-collections/reinhardt/">Max Reinhardt</a>, recognized in America primarily for his elaborate productions of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Franz Werfel’s The Eternal Road, and Karl Vollmoeller’s The Miracle, was born in 1873 at Baden near Vienna, Austria and died in New York City in 1943. Reinhardt’s illustrious career takes on added significance because it coincides with a major shift in the evolution of the modern theater: the ascendancy of the director as the key figure in theatrical production. Reinhardt’s reputation in international theater history is secured by the leading role he played in this transformation, as well as by his innovative use of new theater technology and endless experimentation with theater spaces and locales, which together redefined traditional relationships between actor and audience toward a new participatory theater. What is a prompt book? The prompt book is a master copy of the production script and contains a wealth of instructions and information alongside the basic text of the play. As well as the actors’ lines, you will often see cues for music, movement, light, and many other aspects of stage business. It may also contain sketches of how a piece of staging is supposed to look, or which costume a character should wear in a scene. Why are his important? Reinhardt’s directorial prompt books reflect the ways in which he made plays by major playwrights, including Ibsen, Shakespeare and Wilder, his own. The prompt books contain notations denoting changes in the script, actor moves and technical cues, instructions on how sound, props and scenery were used, and stage drawings. They help us to reconstruct Reinhardt’s techniques and directions in productions. Title A name given to the resource Binghamton Community Poets' Big Horror Reading Series Subject The topic of the resource American poetry -- 20th century; Oral interpretation of poetry Description An account of the resource The Binghamton Community Poets were founded in 1983 by native Binghamton poet, educator, and Harpur College alum Richard Martin. That year he started the The Big Horror Reading Series at a local coffee house. People associated with the series changed throughout the years but always included local writers who were dedicated to the idea of creating a space where literary art could flourish. For fourteen years, readings took place at various venues around the Triple Cities featuring nationally and internationally known writers while continuing to provide “open mike” time for local community writers and sometimes musicians. The series received funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, the Broome County Arts Council, and Poets and Writers, Inc., as well as public donations. Many of the readings between 1987 and 1996 were videotaped. Some of the writers who are featured on the videotapes include (in alphabetical order) Tish Benson, Charles Bernstein, Barney Bush, Wally Butts, Adrian Clarke, Suzanne Cleary, Robert Creeley, Joel Dailey, Jim Daniels, Jack Dann, Diane di Prima, Safiya Henderson-Holmes, Lance Henson, Bob Holman, Pierre Joris, Dave Kelly, Sylvia Kelly, Bill Kemmett, Peter Kidd, Dorianne Laux, Ed Ochester, Kate Rushin, Pamela Sargent, Patricia Smith, Lloyd Van Brunt. They are linked not only to the full individual readings in Rosetta but also to the catalog records for the books in which they are published. This creates a unique convergence experience, as the catalog record “comes alive” and users can see the writer and hear a poem from the book before they take it off the shelf to read. Digitization and DVD Production After the series ended in 1996, the videotapes sat in boxes for ten years. In 2006, since they were most likely degrading and losing both video and audio fidelity, a Memorandum of Understanding between the BCP and the Libraries was agreed on and the process of converting the videotapes to DVD-quality MPEG files for preservation and access purposes was begun. Many of them had glitches and dead spots and several others were not originals but copies, further adding to loss of video and audio fidelity. After the conversion, both the video and audio quality were enhanced to a degree from what was on the tapes.  Phase Two involved producing individual DVDs from the MPEG files. The files were literally “raw”: they started when the camera was turned on and continued without interruption until it was turned off, which meant there was often video of silent microphones and audio of irrelevant crowd noises and conversations. Editing these out made the DVDs much better than the raw files. Preservation and Expanded Access Due to copyright restrictions, the DVDs have been housed in Special Collections and had to be viewed there. This has definitely curtailed their usage. However, a recent development in Rosetta, our digital preservation system, has allowed us to offer a new form of access. Rosetta added a built-in video viewer, which allows the videos to be both preserved and streamed at the same time. In order to accomplish this, the DVDs had to be converted to MP4s to be compatible with the new viewer. The streaming versions are copies of the DVDs, which is why they contain menus and chapters which are not functional but are continuous play. The streaming versions will allow more users to be able to view and listen to this diverse, wide-ranging collection of readings. (N.B.: They are only accessible on campus or via campus VPN.) *The image on the item records is the iconic Swat Sullivan's Hotel, which was located on Binghamton's South Side. Swat's was the venue for the earliest readings in the video collection. The building was torn down in 1990. The celebrated Austrian theater director <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/libraries/about/special-collections/research-and-collections/reinhardt/">Max Reinhardt</a>, recognized in America primarily for his elaborate productions of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Franz Werfel’s The Eternal Road, and Karl Vollmoeller’s The Miracle, was born in 1873 at Baden near Vienna, Austria and died in New York City in 1943. Reinhardt’s illustrious career takes on added significance because it coincides with a major shift in the evolution of the modern theater: the ascendancy of the director as the key figure in theatrical production. Reinhardt’s reputation in international theater history is secured by the leading role he played in this transformation, as well as by his innovative use of new theater technology and endless experimentation with theater spaces and locales, which together redefined traditional relationships between actor and audience toward a new participatory theater. What is a prompt book? The prompt book is a master copy of the production script and contains a wealth of instructions and information alongside the basic text of the play. As well as the actors’ lines, you will often see cues for music, movement, light, and many other aspects of stage business. It may also contain sketches of how a piece of staging is supposed to look, or which costume a character should wear in a scene. Why are his important? Reinhardt’s directorial prompt books reflect the ways in which he made plays by major playwrights, including Ibsen, Shakespeare and Wilder, his own. The prompt books contain notations denoting changes in the script, actor moves and technical cues, instructions on how sound, props and scenery were used, and stage drawings. They help us to reconstruct Reinhardt’s techniques and directions in productions. In 1994, Makoto came from his native Jap an to become the ﬁrst marimbist to win a place on the prestigious Young Concert Artists roster. He has performed for audiences in 40 of the 50 states, with orchestras such as the New Y ork Chamber Symphony, the Chicago Sinfonietta, the California Symphony and, as a recital soloist, his long list o f appearances includes Camegie’s Weill Recital Hall, New York’s 92nd Street Y, Washington’s Kennedy Center, Seoul’s Hoam Art Hall and Tokyo’s Suntory Hall. He has performed numerous times with the American Ballet Theater in New Y ork City, and he has also appeared as a guest artist with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Mr. Nakura ha s established himself as a dedicated champion of the music of our time , and many lea ding young composers, including the composers on his three CDs have written pieces for him. It is his mission to explore and expand the possibilities of the marimba, and to demonstra te what an exciting and prov ocative vehicle it oﬀers to composers and what a thrilling experience t presents for audiences. Born in Kobe. Japan, Mr. Nakura began to play the ma imba at the age of eight. Carlos SénchezGutiérrez Carlos SanchezGutiérrez was born in Mexico City in 1964 and now lives in the New York Tundra, where he teaches composition a t the Eastman School of Music. He studied with Jacob Druckman, Martin Bresnick , Steven Mackey and Henri Dutilleu x at Yale, Princeton and Tanglewood, resp ectively. He h as received man y of the stand ard awards in the ﬁeld (e.g. Guggenheim , Fulbright, Koussevitzky, Fromm, American Academy of Arts and Letters.) Schoenberg (1874–1951) Almost twenty years after his death, Arnold Schoenberg still remains the most controversial composer of this cen tury. H is most popular work, i ndeed his only composition that has found any permanent place in the instrumenta l reper toire, is his op. 4, Transﬁgured Night. Written originally as a string s extet, it was later arranged by the composer for atrlng orchestra, in which f orm it is most frequen tly perf ormed. Although its rich quasiWagnerian harmonies aand expres sive melodies render it continually interesting as a purely musical exp erience, it was conceived as a tone poem following a literary plot. Based on a poem by Richard Dehmel, the story tells of a woman who confesses to her lover that she is pregnan t with the child of another man. She tells him how, before she me she became so afraid that life would pass her by and she would never be t him, come a mother that she gave herself to a virtual stranger. Now that she has fo und some one she truly loves, she is full of remorse and guilt. He assures her that their love has transformed them both, and the child will be his. While played withou t inter ruption, the music falls into tw o large parts, th e ﬁrst reﬂecting the ang uish of the woman, the second the comforting words of the man. Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in Dmajor Allegro Aﬀettuoso Allegro . J. S. Bach (numo) Andante Moderato Because Rossini is known to the music world as a composer of comic ope ras, many people are not aware of the considerable amount of instrumental and piano muaie he composed throughout his life. These works can best be approached, however, if one remembers that they were written by a master composer of comi c operas, even his very early sonatas for strings. Although these w orks were writ ten when their composer was still a student, indeed still a “teenage r,” all the characteristics that were later to endear him to singers and audiences alike can be found: a light entertaining sense of humor, lyric melodies suppor ted by the simplest accompaniments, a. profusion of ornaments and embellishments decorat ing these melodies, and a brilliant approach to virtuoso display. Thus, these oom parativsly simple works require especially skillf ul performers and very precise ensemble playin g to be properly realized. As if anticipating the arias he was later to write for comic bass voices, there appears a tri cky passage for double bass in the variations that comprise th e last movement of this sonata. Symphony No. 29 in Amajor, K. 201 . W . A. Mozart (17661791) Allegro moderato Bach’s Brandenburg concertos are among the ﬁnest examples of the Baro concerto grosso. Unlike the solo piano or violin concerto, which became que more popular in the latter part of the 18th century, the earlier concerto grosso f ea tured a group of solo instrumen ts playing against a larger ensemble. In t his con certo, th e string orchestra is contrasted with a trio consisting of a ﬂute, solo violin, and harpsichord. In the ﬁrst movement, the large ensemble continually restates its ma jestic opening ritornello, or f ragments of it, while th e solo instru ments perform elaborate and in tricate ﬁgures. A surprise occurs near th e end of the movement as the instrumen ts recede into the background leaving th e harpsi chord exposed in a dazzling cadenza. In the second movement, the large is totall y silent, and the trio performs alone. The last movement begins ensemble with the solo instruments playing a f ugue, which soon expands to include the f ull en semble once again. INTERMISSION Andante Menuetto Allegro con spirito By his o wn statement, Mozart considered himself ﬁrst and foremo st a com poser o f cperas. Many m usicologists consider his contribution to the piano con certo to be at least of equal value musically. Interestingly, although he composed many more symphonies throughout his life (his ﬁrst was completed wh en he w as eight), and although the last few are among the greatest in the entire re pertoire, most of the others are hardly known, and rarely perf ormed. Probabl y the ﬁnest of the early symphonies is this one in A, in which the composer’s uniquely lyrle gif ts can be felt f rom the opening bars. It is this exceptionally a ttractive theme that appenrs at the open ing of th e ﬁrst movement that re mains th e most memora hle melody in the listener’s mind. The slow movement beautif ully com bines th e elegance of the Classic style with the seriousness of Mozart’s music at his best.
