In 2006, since they were most likely degrading and losing both video and audio fidelity, a Memorandum of Understanding between the BCP and the Libraries was agreed on and the process of converting the videotapes to DVD-quality MPEG files for preservation and access purposes was begun. Many of them had glitches and dead spots and several others were not originals but copies, further adding to loss of video and audio fidelity. After the conversion, both the video and audio quality were enhanced to a degree from what was on the tapes.  Phase Two involved producing individual DVDs from the MPEG files. The files were literally “raw”: they started when the camera was turned on and continued without interruption until it was turned off, which meant there was often video of silent microphones and audio of irrelevant crowd noises and conversations. Editing these out made the DVDs much better than the raw files. Preservation and Expanded Access Due to copyright restrictions, the DVDs have been housed in Special Collections and had to be viewed there. This has definitely curtailed their usage. However, a recent development in Rosetta, our digital preservation system, has allowed us to offer a new form of access. Rosetta added a built-in video viewer, which allows the videos to be both preserved and streamed at the same time. In order to accomplish this, the DVDs had to be converted to MP4s to be compatible with the new viewer. The streaming versions are copies of the DVDs, which is why they contain menus and chapters which are not functional but are continuous play. The streaming versions will allow more users to be able to view and listen to this diverse, wide-ranging collection of readings. JOANNE DANZHOU LI, pianist, is a graduating senior at Binghamton University, majoring in Bioengineering in the Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science. She was born in Harbin, China, and immigrated to the United States in 2003 at the age of 16. She started to learn the piano at the age of three with her primary piano teacher Na certiﬁcate of the highest level (Level 10) in the Chinese National Music Examinations in 2000. During the summer of 2004, she participated in the yearly event, “The Summer o f H arbin” concert as one o f t he pianists in the “Hundredperson piano“ performance. Moreover, she has been the pianist for the Binghamton Chinese Christian Church (division of Twin Orchard Baptist Church) for two years. Now, she has been studying the piano with Professor Ewa MackiewiczWolfe since her freshman year at BU, Although Li is not pursuing her future career as a musician, she will always keep learning and playing the piano as an essential part of her life because music is truly something that she cannot live without. Ewa MackiewiczWolfe, adjunct Piano Professor at Binghamton University, received her Bachelor and Master degrees in Piano Performance from the Academy of Music in Lodz, Poland where she continued as an Assistant Professor and Master Lecturer in music. She won the First Prize of the International Competition of Renaissance and Baroque Music in Warsaw, Poland, and is also the recipient of numerous awards including the international music competitions in Germany and Hungary. She continued an active performing career as a recitalist, chamber musician and a soloist with symphony orchestras. She performed throughout Europe, Canada and the Northeast United States including �Jordan Hall of the New England Conservatory of Music, Phillips Academy and Boston University. Acclaimed for her performances of Fryderyk Chopin music, she has given remembrance concerts at the Consulate General of France, the Consulate General of Poland, New York City, the Hamilton Conservatory of Arts, Hamilton, Canada and the New England Chopin Society, Boston. In the concert season of 20082009, MackiewiczWolfe appeared in recitals and chamber music concerts featuring Grieg’s Sonata for Cello and Piano with cellist Stephen Stalker; Rachmaninoﬀ’s Suites No. 1, 2 and Symphonic Dances for Two Pianos and the Binghamton premier of John Adams’s Hallelujah Junction for Two Pianos with pianist Michael Salmirs as part of the Fredheim Memorial Series. Mengru (Ivy) Zeng, pianist, is a junior majoring in Accounting in School of Management at Binghamton University. She began studying piano at the age of four with one of the best piano teachers in her hometown city, Dalian, China. At the age of seven, she won the city wide Pianoperforming Competition of Youth and Children, which was also the ﬁrst award of many competition prizes she has earned. In 1998, Zeng started studying piano with Lai Yuanpei at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China. She took part in the National Piano Grade Examination held by the Association of Chinese Musicians in 1999 and received the highest Level10 certiﬁcate. In 2004, Zeng was invited by the live show “Good Times This Weekend” of Dalian TV Station to perform a piano solo piece, “The Nightingale,” by Mikhail Glinka. Zeng moved to the United States in June 2004. She is currently taking piano lessons with Professor Ewa MackiewiczWolfe at Binghamton University. Even though Zeng is not pursuing a professional career as a pianist, music will always be a signiﬁcant part of her life. Mélanie LaGuerre, pianist, has been studying with Ewa Mackiewicz Wolfe since her freshman year at Binghamton University. Now as a sophomore, she is a PreDental student, and her major is Biology and her minor is music. At a young age, her piano studies started at Sylvia’s Ballet Academy in her hometown Long Island, NY. At the academy she developed a love for classical composers such as Frederic Chopin, and Franz Liszt. Jennifer Elizabeth Chen has been a cellist for over 12 years. A Rochester, NY native, she has played cello with several diﬀerent orchestras and ensembles, including the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, various AllState and AllCounty orchestras, and most recently, the Binghamton Symphony Orchestra. She most recently won the Binghamton University Student Concerto and Aria Competition and appeared as a soloist with the Binghamton Symphony Orchestra in March. Jennifer is in her third and ﬁnal year at Binghamton University, majoring in Mathematics and Psychology. She has been actively developing her musicality through the music department at Binghamton University with involvement in several chamber groups, private studio lessons, as well as membership in the orchestra. As a student at Binghamton University, Jennifer has been a Resident Assistant for two years. This University Scholar is a member is Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi, and has been awarded with the President’s Award for Undergraduate Student Excellence and the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. Upon graduation this coming May, Jennifer will be attending Columbia University as a Math for America fellow, pursuing a career in teaching secondary mathematics, but hopes to continue playing the cello in the upcoming years. Kimberly Metaxas, clarinetist, a native of Vestal, NY, is a graduate student of conducting at Binghamton University studying with Professor Robert Smith. Ms. Metaxas holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Therapy from Michigan State University. She is a music teacher for the Susquehanna Valley and UnionEndicott High School marching bands, and BOCES summer school program. Most recently, Ms. Metaxas has been a member of Binghamton University’s Wind Symphony and Harpur Jazz Ensemble, Vestal Community Band, and the Empire Statesmen Drum and Bugle Corps. And rew Tsai, violinist, hails from Massachusetts, and has been playing the violin since the age of ﬁve. He has been in many youth and school orchestras, as well as district festival orchestras. He is currently studying under Dr. Janey Choi, and participates in the Binghamton University Orchestra. �Grace Kim, violinist, is a freshman at Binghamton University. She was born in Frankfurt, Germany. Her inspiration of music came from her dad who is a pianist and a professor in Korea. She started playing violin since Binghamton University Music Department’s State and AllCounty Orchestra, Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Several youth orchestras in Seoul, Korea. She is currently in Binghamton Symphony Orchestra. She is involved in chamber group W 45 The Binghamton University Department of Music is proud to present its 20102011 season concerts. After the conversion, both the video and audio quality were enhanced to a degree from what was on the tapes.  Phase Two involved producing individual DVDs from the MPEG files. The files were literally “raw”: they started when the camera was turned on and continued without interruption until it was turned off, which meant there was often video of silent microphones and audio of irrelevant crowd noises and conversations. Editing these out made the DVDs much better than the raw files. Preservation and Expanded Access Due to copyright restrictions, the DVDs have been housed in Special Collections and had to be viewed there. This has definitely curtailed their usage. However, a recent development in Rosetta, our digital preservation system, has allowed us to offer a new form of access. Rosetta added a built-in video viewer, which allows the videos to be both preserved and streamed at the same time. In order to accomplish this, the DVDs had to be converted to MP4s to be compatible with the new viewer. The streaming versions are copies of the DVDs, which is why they contain menus and chapters which are not functional but are continuous play. The streaming versions will allow more users to be able to view and listen to this diverse, wide-ranging collection of readings. John has served as Organist and Minister of Music at University Presbyter ian Church in Buﬀalo, NY since September of 2005. John also holds a fulltime position as the middle and high scho ol vocal music teache r a t Le tchworth Central School in Gainesville, NY, directing four choral ensembles and teaching classroom music and music theory classes. He studied organ wit h Dr. Jonathan Biggers and Dr. Judy Congdon, and holds degrees fro m Binghamton Univers ity (Master of Music in Organ Performance, 2006) and Houghton Colle ge (Bachelor of Music in Music Education, 2001). In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he also codirects the spring musical production a t Letchworth Centra l School and has organized multiple regional solo and ensemble festivals for middle and high school students. Casadesus Recital H all �About th e Perform ers Hsiuwen (Lisa) Wan g started playing piano at the age of 51/2 in Taiwan and was accepted into a music program at KuangJen School three months later. In 1991, she came to the United States and studied with Morris Borenstein, who encouraged her to audition for the PreCollege Division of Juilliard. Wang was accepted there at the age of 11 and studied with Richard Fabre and Antonio Fermin. In the same year, she won the New York State Music Teachers Association Competition. in 1997, she performed with the Highlands Symphony Orchestra at the Lycien Center in Sugarloaf, N.Y. Wang organizes and performs yearly at Glenn Arden in Goshen, N.Y. and gives master classes in Taipei City, Taiwan whenever she visits her native country. This winter, she performed at KuangJen School and plans to perform at GaoShoang Cultural center next summer. She also plays violin and ﬂute. Wang studies piano with Prof. Ewa MackiewiczWolfe and is a thirdyear student at Binghamton University, majoring in accounting and music. Jessica (Yushan) Ch eng, a native of Taiwan, started her music education at age 6 and was accepted into a music program for gifted students at KuangJen School. At 9, she began studying cello as her secondary instrument. In 1996, she came to the U.S. and was accepted into the Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Division, where she studied piano with Fiorella Canin and cello with Joseph Meyers. She also played in an orchestra conducted by James Sadewhite. As a cellist, she has performed in numerous concerts of Youth Orchestra, CYCNY, around the greater New York City area. She was accepted into the North American Elite Youth Orchestra for a performance at Carnegie Hall in 2001. As a piano soloist, she made her debut at Taiwan Center in Flushing, N.Y. on May 12, 2000 and last summer, was invited to give her Far East debut in Taipei City. She was a 2001 a winner of the Binghamton University Concerto Competition. Cheng is a secondyear accounting/music major. She is a psychology major and a music minor. She began her training with Ms. Gao Fei in her local town, where she received two golden ribbon awards for outstanding performance in piano by the Rockland County Teacher’s Guild. She completed the NYSSMA piano auditions through level 6 with a perfect score. She was selected to perform in the piano showcase at the Rochester winter conference in 2010. She also completed the associated board of the Royal School ofMusic with distinction and participated in the “high score” recital. In 2010, she entered Manhattan School of Music precollege division, where she studied with Ms. Elena Belli. She also participated in the NYYS Chamber music program. She played in a piano trio and was selected to perform in Symphony Space. She participated annually in the Music Marathon for the United Hospice of Rockland County. a fundraising event for their music therapy program. Music has always been a huge part of her li fe. As the winner of the concerto competition last year at Binghamton University, she performed the ﬁrst movement of Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 1 6 with the BU Symphony Orchestra. She currently studies with Professor Michael Salmirs at Binghamton University, and hopes to eventually teach piano students. Natasha T alukdar is a sophomore at Binghamton University pursuing degrees in both Piano Performance and in English literature. Natasha has been playing piano for ﬁfteen years, having previously studied with Dr. Simon Li, and is currently studying with Michael Salmirs as a Bachelor of Music student. She completed the six levels of NYSSMA piano auditions with perfect scores and completed all eight levels of the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music. Before coming to Binghamton, Natasha made her solo debut at Carnegie Hall as a winner of the American Asian Fine Arts Young Artists Competition. She was also named a winner of the World Journal Young Musicians Competition, and a ﬁnalist of the New York lnternational Music Competition. In high school, Natasha was a founding member of Piano for Patients, a student organization that went to nursing homes all over Long Island and played classical music for senior citizens. She is also part of the Chamber Music program at Binghamton, the accompanist for Harpur Chorale, and teaches beginner piano to younger children.
