Niel DePonte Blue Rondo A La Turk (1960)  . Dave Brubeck Arranged by Steve Yeager BO  INTERMISSION cu Ogoun Badagris (1981) ..  .Christopher Rouse Rush Arranged by Marc Silvagni Marc Silvagni, Conductor Suite for Solo Drum Set & Percussion Ensemble (1982). . Dave Mancini Marc Silvagni, Drum Set Samuel Bae Adam Goldenberg Amanda Jacobs Mike McManamon Marc Silvagni Devan Tracy Lee Vilinsky Andrew Williamson DANIEL  FABRICIUS  has  been  a  member  of  the  Binghamton University  faculty as percussion instructor since  1992 and has also served as Director of Bands at Owego Free Academy since 1989.  He has  been  a  member  of  the  Binghamton  Philharmonic  percussion section since  1982 and  is also  comfortable  performing in  popular, rock,  jazz,  and  other  styles.  He  has  played  as  a  free­lance percussionist accompanying national touring artists such as Michael W.  Smith,  Tommy  Tune,  Jerry  Vail,  Lorrie  Morgan,  Ringling Brothers Circus, the Smothers Bothers, and Ella  Fitzgerald.  He is highly regarded  in the region as a percussion soloist and ensemble player.  He has served the New York State School Music Association as an All­State Percussion adjudicator for many years.  In addition he is the Instrumental Jazz Reviews editor of The School Music News and was the Jazz editor for the recently published NYSSMA Manual, Edition XXIX.  Dan serves on the faculty of the Binghamton  High School  Percussion  Camp  each  summer  and  over  the  years  has presented  many percussion  clinics at several  state conventions and conferences.  He also oflen serves as a guest conductor for honor band festivals  and  has  adjudicated  Jazz  Ensemble  and  Concert  Band performances at music festivals throughout New York. �L E E  VILINSKY is a senior Psychology and Music double major from Long Island, New York.  At Binghamton University, he distributes his time  between  doing  research  involving  human  and  animal  cognition under the supervision of Dr. Ralph Miller, acting as a recording engineer for  the  music  department,  participating  in  the  Evolutionary  Studies (EvoS) program, carrying out  activities with  MOE and  Psi  Chi, and performing in various musical groups, including the BU orchestra, BU percussion ensemble, and Lady Skaga.  Lee has been actively involved in percussion since fourth grade, but discovered his passion in pop and rock music when first learning drumset in ninth grade.  Since then, Lee has become  interested  in  music theory and composing and  arranging music of various styles and  for various groups.  After graduation, he plans to attend graduate school for experimental psychology to continue doing research involved in music cognition and auditory perception.  He also plans to become a rock star. MARC  SILVAGNI  is  a  senior  at  Binghamton  University.  He  is currently double majoring in Percussion Performance and Psychology. He plans on attending graduate school after Binghamton to earn a MSEd degree in Social Studies. Marc started his m usic career relatively late in 7” grade under band director and amazing  jazz drummer Marc Copell. During  the  summers  following  7” and  8  grade,  Marc  attended  the Manhattan  School  of  Music  Summer  Camp  and  studied  under percussionist  Jeff Kraus  who  taught  him  about  the  entire  world  of percussion. He  then  attended  St. Francis Preparatory High  School  in Fresh Meadows, Queens, and studied under percussionist Mark Teofilo. In  the summer of his sophomore year, Marc and other students, under teacher David Kobayashi (Binghamton Alum), traveled to Australia and played with the Tallahassee Winds in the Sydney Opera House for the Eric  Whitacre Festival. Marc began college at  Binghamton University under percussionist Dan Fabricius. Here he has had featured solos with the Percussion Ensemble and has played with the Harpur Jazz Ensemble, University  Orchestra,  Harpur  Chorale,  Women’s  Chorus,  and  the Commencement Wind Ensemble. He has also played at the Musica Nova concert and at Stephanie Lehman’s Masters Recital. � Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. She has been on the faculty at Binghamton University since 1991 and Ithaca College School of Music since 1999. She is on the Executive Board of the New York District MTNA organization.  She is President of the local District V I I  Music Teachers Association and is an active adjudicator for the National Piano Guild Organization. TONY ALDUINO is a music educator in the Susquehanna Valley School District and an active musician in the Southern Tier.  He is frequently called upon to play  saxophone with the Sammy  Kay  Orchestra, Music Unlimited, the Terry Walker Project and the Southern Tier Concert Band. Mr. Alduino is also the baritone saxophonist with the Empire Saxophone Quartet, a  professional  ensemble  of  the  highest  caliber.  They  have toured throughout the United States and can be heard on several CDs. Mr. Alduino has also recorded with the Rascher  Saxophone Ensemble, the Fredonia Saxophone Ensemble, and the Saxophone Sinfonia, an 18 piece saxophone ensemble that performed in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center.  He teaches saxophone at The Woodwind Studio in Conklin.  He is  on  the  Executive  Board  of  BCMEA  and  is  a  NYSSMA  All­State adjudicator.  Prior to coming to the Binghamton area, Mr. Alduino was a member of the Onondaga Community College faculty and saxophonist with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra.  He is the father of two, Gina Kline, a music teacher in the Union Endicott School District and Angelo Alduino, a computer expert in  NYC.  He  enjoys kayaking, biking  and skiing. (1858­1924) Liebstdu um Schdnheit..  Fruhlingsmorgen  Erinnerung Scheiden und Meiden Erismena, currently  disguised a s  a  young captured soldier. Aldimira  has 0 leggiadri occhl belli (Oh Lovely, Beautiful Eyes) Quando me’n vo’  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  Giacomo Puccini From La Bohéme  The first set of Italian songs all date to the 17'“ Century. With the exception of the first piece, each of these songs are originally from operas. “Intorno all’idol mio”  is from the opera  Orontea, which premiered in 1656.  Orontea, the Queen of Egypt sings to her secret love, Alindoro, a common painter, after he has fainted. “Che  fiero costume,”  from the opera  Ereocle  e Polinice, opened in 1675. It tells the Greek story of Oedipus’ twin sons. This arietta, one of 90 arias from the opera, is a rant about the unhappiness caused by Cupid and the irony that he is still a suckling babe. “Vaghe stelle” is from the opera Erismena. It opened in 1655 in Venice. A manuscript of an English version of the opera from the 1670‘s makes it the earliest known opera written in English. In January 2009, Bodleian Library of Oxford University announced  the  acquisition  of the  earliest  surviving  score  of Erismena purchased from a private collection. The translation given here is from this English  version.  Aldimira,  the  courtesan  to  the  king,  is  trying  to  wake living rays from heaven, so bright and clear, since you desire so much to see me languish, to see me die, lovely eyes that I adore, see how I die. Cinq mélodies populaires Grecques (Five Popular Greek Melodies) These five songs, set in 1907, are authentic Greek folk songs harmonized by Ravel. From the fourth song, a Ientisk is a small evergreen shmb found all over Greece. It is cultivated for its resin but the leaves and fruit are also used for various uses from cooking  to lamp oil. The resin has been used as chewing gum since ancient Greece. Margaret Reitz Pej Reitz, pianist, is a native of the Binghamton Area.  She received her Bachelor and Master o f Music degrees in piano performance with accompanying  emphasis.  She  attended  Boston  University,  New England Conservatory and Binghamton University.  She has studied piano with Jean Casadesus, Victor Rosenbaum, Seymour Fink and Walter  Ponce  and  accompanying  with  Allen  Rogers.  She  has accompanied  throughout  the  United  States,  in  England,  South America, Spain and at th e American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz,  Austria.  She  was  a  winner  of the  Artistic  Ambassadors Program by the United States Information Agency in partnership with the John F.  Kennedy Center for the performing arts. Instrument Competition (Piano Group, Age12­16) in Beijing, China.  She at) INTERMSSION ca Piano Trio for six hands, one piano.  .  JOANNE DANZHOU LI, pianist, is a graduating senior at Binghamton University,  majoring  in  Bioengineering  in  the  Watson  School  of Engineering and Applied Science.  She was born in Harbin, China, and immigrated to the United States in 2003 at the age of 16.  She started to learn the piano at the age of three with her primary piano teacher Na certificate of the highest level (Level 10) in the Chinese National Music Examinations in 2000.  During the summer of 2004, she participated in the yearly event, “The Summer o f H   arbin” concert as one o f t he pianists in the “Hundred­person piano“ performance. Moreover, she has been the pianist for the Binghamton Chinese Christian Church (division of Twin Orchard Baptist Church) for two years. Now,  she  has  been  studying  the  piano  with  Professor  Ewa Mackiewicz­Wolfe since her freshman year at BU,  Although Li  is not pursuing her future career as a musician, she will always keep learning and playing the piano as an essential part of her life because music is truly something that she cannot live without. Ewa  Mackiewicz­Wolfe,  adjunct  Piano  Professor  at  Binghamton University,  received  her  Bachelor  and  Master  degrees  in  Piano Performance from the Academy of Music in  Lodz, Poland  where she continued as an Assistant Professor and Master Lecturer in music. She won the First Prize of the International Competition of Renaissance and Baroque Music in Warsaw, Poland, and is also the recipient of numerous awards including the international  music competitions in Germany and Hungary. She continued an active performing career as a recitalist, chamber musician  and  a  soloist  with  symphony  orchestras.  She  performed throughout Europe, Canada and the Northeast United States including �Jordan  Hall  of  the  New  England  Conservatory  of  Music,  Phillips Academy and Boston  University. Acclaimed  for her performances of Fryderyk  Chopin  music, she  has given  remembrance  concerts at the Consulate  General  of France, the Consulate General  of Poland, New York City, the Hamilton Conservatory of Arts, Hamilton, Canada and the New England Chopin Society, Boston. In  the concert season of 2008­2009, Mackiewicz­Wolfe appeared in recitals and chamber music concerts featuring Grieg’s Sonata for Cello and Piano with cellist Stephen Stalker; Rachmaninoff’s Suites No. 1, 2 and Symphonic Dances for Two Pianos and the Binghamton premier of John Adams’s  Hallelujah Junction for Two Pianos with pianist Michael Salmirs as part of the Fredheim Memorial Series. Mengru  (Ivy)  Zeng, pianist,  is  a  junior  majoring  in  Accounting  in School of Management at Binghamton University.  She began studying piano at  the age  of four with  one  of the  best  piano teachers  in  her hometown city, Dalian, China.  At the age of seven, she won the city­ wide Piano­performing Competition of Youth and Children, which was also the first award of many competition prizes she has earned.  In 1998, Zeng  started  studying  piano  with  Lai  Yuanpei  at  the  Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China. She took part in the National Piano Grade Examination held by the Association of Chinese Musicians in 1999 and received the highest Level­10 certificate.  In 2004, Zeng was invited by the live show “Good Times This Weekend” of Dalian TV Station to perform a piano solo piece, “The Nightingale,” by Mikhail Glinka. Zeng moved to the United States in June 2004.  She is currently taking  piano  lessons  with  Professor  Ewa  Mackiewicz­Wolfe  at Binghamton University. Even though Zeng is not pursuing a professional career as a pianist, music will always be a significant part of her life. Mélanie LaGuerre, pianist, has been studying with Ewa Mackiewicz­ Wolfe  since  her  freshman year at Binghamton  University. Now as a sophomore, she is a Pre­Dental student, and her major is Biology and her minor is  music. At a young age, her piano studies started at Sylvia’s Ballet Academy in her hometown Long Island, NY.  At the academy she developed a love for classical composers such as Frederic Chopin, and Franz Liszt. Jennifer  Elizabeth  Chen  has  been  a  cellist  for  over  12  years.  A Rochester,  NY  native,  she  has  played  cello  with  several  different orchestras and ensembles, including the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra,  various  All­State  and  All­County  orchestras,  and  most recently, the Binghamton Symphony Orchestra.  She most recently won the Binghamton University Student Concerto and Aria Competition and appeared  as  a soloist  with  the  Binghamton  Symphony  Orchestra  in March.  Jennifer is in her third and final year at Binghamton University, majoring  in  Mathematics  and  Psychology.  She  has  been  actively developing her musicality through the music department at Binghamton University with involvement in several chamber groups, private studio lessons,  as  well  as  membership  in  the  orchestra.  As  a  student  at Binghamton University, Jennifer has been a Resident Assistant for two years.  This University Scholar is a member is Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa  Phi,  and  has  been  awarded  with  the  President’s  Award  for Undergraduate  Student  Excellence  and  the  Chancellor’s  Award  for Student Excellence.  Upon graduation this coming May, Jennifer will be attending Columbia University as a Math for America fellow, pursuing a career in teaching secondary mathematics, but hopes to continue playing the cello in the upcoming years. Kimberly Metaxas, clarinetist, a native of Vestal, NY, is a graduate student of conducting at Binghamton University studying with Professor Robert  Smith.  Ms.  Metaxas  holds  a  Bachelor’s  Degree  in  Music Education  from  SUNY  Fredonia,  and a  Bachelor’s  Degree  in  Music Therapy from Michigan State University.  She is a music teacher for the Susquehanna Valley and Union­Endicott High School marching bands, and BOCES summer school program.  Most recently, Ms. Metaxas has been a member of Binghamton University’s Wind Symphony and Harpur Jazz Ensemble,  Vestal  Community  Band, and the Empire  Statesmen Drum and Bugle Corps. And rew Tsai, violinist, hails from Massachusetts, and has been playing the violin since the age of five. He has been in many youth and school orchestras, as well as district festival orchestras. He is currently studying under Dr. Janey Choi, and  participates in  the Binghamton University Orchestra. �Grace Kim, violinist, is a freshman at Binghamton University.  She was born in Frankfurt, Germany. Her inspiration of music came from her dad who is a pianist and a professor in Korea. She started playing violin since Binghamton University Music Department’s State and All­County Orchestra, Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra, and  Several  youth  orchestras  in  Seoul,  Korea.  She  is  currently  in Binghamton  Symphony Orchestra. She is involved  in  chamber group W  45­ The Binghamton University Department of Music is proud to present its 2010­2011 season concerts. The Department of Music presents over 100 concerts (most of which are free) from solo recitals to orchestra the age of 6. She has played violin in many orchestras including All­ under  Professor  Crawford and taking studio  lessons under Dr.  Janey Choi. In the field of music education, he has served as a clinician around the world, while also authoring a number of highly esteemed instructional books and band arrangements for musicians of all ages and abilities. For the past ten years Davis has been forging ahead as an entrepreneur, with Hip­Bone Music, a growing business that presently handles his publishing  activities  and  work  as  a  recording  artist.  Dedicated  to increasing  the  popularity  and  stature  of  brass  instruments  and emphasizing “how hip, cool and fun it is to play music,” Hip­Bone Music is set on expanding its educational focus and becoming a viable avenue for other brass artists. A native of San Jose, California, Davis received his musical training at the prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Upon graduation he hooked up with the Buddy Rich Band for a two­year stint that brought an immeasurable amount of bandstand experience and a wealth of professional friendships that continue to this day. He settled in Manhattan in the mid­1980s and before long was being regarded as one of the top trombonists around. As testimony to his versatility and wide regard, the list of jazz and pop luminaries he has worked with over the years reads like a who’s who: Sarah Vaughan, Sting, Harry Connick, Jr., David Sanborn, Beck, Branford Marsalis, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Sheryl Crow, Lyle Lovett, Terence Blanchard, Bob Mintzer and scores of others. A multiple recipient of awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Davis maintains his own jazz groups and projects as well. Through Hip­ Bone Music, Davis  has  documented  his  efforts  on five  solo  CDs— Trumpets Eleven, a showcase for 11 virtuosic trumpet masters; New Brass, a melding of jazz and classical brass styles; Brass Nation, a gathering  together  of fifty­five of the  world’s  greatest  brass  players; Bonetown,  a  pairing  of Davis  with  LA  bass  trombone  maestro  Bill Reichenbach; and Absolute Trombone, yet another musical conclave, this time with eighteen New York City­based trombonists.
