26 February, 1864
William S. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Posted from Fort McHenry, Baltimore Maryland
This letter was enclosed in a 5.[5]” x 3” white envelope, postmarked Feb 27 ‘64,
BALTIMORE, MD. The postmark is blurry, slightly faded, with portions of the
print missing. The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter. The stamp has been cut from
upper the right hand corner of the envelope, part of the cancellation remains.
Both the postmark and the cancellation are blue ink.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Anna Wilcox
Smyrna
Shenango
Ny
The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side. This removed the ‘Co’
that likely followed ‘Shenango.’ There is very slight discoloration on the back of
the envelope, with some blue ink staining from the postmark and cancellation of
another letter.
Three and one-half pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Embossed with an indiscernible impression in the upper left
hand corners of pages one and three. Watermarked with ten horizontal lines. The
ink of the letter is quite faded. No foxing evident. One pin-sized hole where the
upper of the two horizontal creases crosses the single vertical crease. There is a
3/8” tear at the free end of the upper crease on page three/four. There are three
creases: one vertical and two horizontal. Folded size is 5” x 2.75”.

18 January, 1864
William S. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Posted from Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Maryland.
This letter was enclosed in a 5.[5]” x 3” white envelope with cancelled three cent
stamp in the upper right hand corner of the envelope; postmarked Jan 19 ‘64,
BALTIMORE, MD. The postmark runs off the top of the envelope and not all the
characters are complete. The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter. The stamp
cancellation consists of four concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in diameter and
the smallest is 3/16” in diameter. Both the postmark and the cancellation are blue
ink.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Anna Wilcox
Smyrna
Shenango C
Ny
The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side, this removed the ‘o’ which
likely followed the ‘C’ in ‘Shenango C.’
Also written in black ink:
Front of envelope has one addition problem:
40
30
340
and one multiplication problem:
40
30
40
120
1240
Back of envelope has a single line:
[unreadable character]) 1 [reverse comma] 2 4 0 (1 [reverse comma] 2 4 0
Ect,

There is a black, possibly ink, semicircular stain on the top front of the envelope
and a quarter inch long tear at the bottom, near the center. There is also some
blue ink staining likely from the postmark of another letter on the back of the
envelope. Slight foxing at the edges. Seven pin-holes in an oval pattern, six
defining the oval with one in the center, were punched, from the front, through the
envelope three-quarters inch from the bottom and one and one-eighth inch from
the left edge. The pin-holes must have been done at a time when the letter was
not in the envelope: the letter contains no pin-holes.

Three pages with a note on the fourth page.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. The blue lines of the paper are almost completely faded away,
the ink the letter was written in is also quite faded. Slight foxing. A black ink
stain appears on the top of page one, a portion of this stain has soaked through to
page two. There are two very small (<1/32”) holes where the two horizontal
creases cross the single vertical crease. There are three creases: one vertical and
two horizontal. Folded size is 5” x 2.75”.

23 September, 1864
William S. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Washington Street Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia
This letter was enclosed in a 5.25” x 2.875” white envelope, with a cancelled
three cent stamp in the upper left corner; postmarked Sep 23 ’64,
ALEXANDRIA, VA. The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter and overlays the
stamp. The stamp cancellation is to the right of the stamp and consists of four
concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in diameter and the smallest is 3/16” in
diameter. The postmark and stamp cancellation are black ink.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Annie Wilcox
Smyrna
Shenango Co
N.Y
The envelope was opened by cutting the rights side. Slight foxing along the edges
and both faces. The envelope is torn at the upper left corner of the side back.
There is a light black ink stain on the upper center of the back, probably from the
postmark/stamp cancellation of another letter.
Four pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Embossed, in the upper right hand corners of pages one and
three, with a seal in the shape of a oval containing the word “PARIS” and
surrounded by filigree. Watermarked with ten horizontal lines. Ink appears
unfaded. Very slight foxing, most evident along the single vertical crease and on
page four. There are three creases: one vertical and two horizontal. Folded size
is 5” x 2.75”.

27 August, 1864
William S. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Posted from the Washington Street Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia.
This letter was enclosed in a 5.5” x 3.125” white envelope, with cancelled three
cent stamp in the upper right hand corner of the envelope; postmarked Aug 28
‘64, ALEXANDRIA, VA. The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter, is partly stamped
off the envelope, and partly overlays the stamp. The stamp cancellation is
stamped partly off the envelope, consisting of four concentric circles, the largest
is 3/4” in diameter and the smallest is 3/16” in diameter. Both the postmark and the
cancellation are black ink.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Annie Wilcox
Smyrna
Chenango Co
NY
The envelope was opened by cutting the left side. Slight foxing along the edges.
The envelope has a stain of unknown origin along the right edge, it extends into
the envelope approximately one-half inch on the front and three-quarters inch on
the back. The upper left edge of the back has a black stamp cancellation stamped
partly off the envelope, the lower third of the cancellation is faded/missing.
Three pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Embossed, in the upper right hand corners of pages one and
three, with a seal in the shape of a shield surmounted by a crown with a banner
below. Watermarked with eight horizontal lines. Ink appears unfaded. Very
slight foxing. Staining along the vertical crease: this is from the same time and
source as the staining on the envelope. There is an ink stain on page three from
where WSP scribbled out a word. The scribbling bled through to page four.
There is one very small (<1/32”) hole where the lower of two horizontal creases
crosses the single vertical crease. Folded size is 5” x 2.875”.

16 November, 1864
William S. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Washington Street Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia
This letter was enclosed in a 5[.5]” x 3.125” white envelope, with a cancelled
three cent stamp in the upper right corner; postmarked Nov 16 [‘64],
ALEXA[ND]RIA, VA. The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter and is missing most
of the ‘64’ and parts of ‘ALEXANDRIA.’ The stamp cancellation consists of
four concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in diameter and the smallest is 3/16” in
diameter. The postmark and stamp cancellation are black ink and slightly
smeared.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Annie Wilcox
Smyrna
Chenango C[o]
N.Y
The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side. The tear removed the right
third of the stamp and the final ‘o’ from ‘Chenango Co.’ Slight foxing along the
edges. The envelope appears to have been folded horizontally and vertically.
Two and one-half pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Embossed, in the upper right hand corners of pages one and
three, with a seal in the shape of a shield containing the words “GEORGE MC
DOWELL PHILA.” Watermarked with eleven horizontal lines. Ink appears
unfaded. Slight foxing, most evident along the single vertical crease. The letter
shows evidence of having been folded when the envelope was folded. There are
eight creases: three vertical and five horizontal. Folded size is 5” x 3”.

William S. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Washington Street Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia
This letter was enclosed in a 5.25” x 2.875” white envelope; postmarked Oct 6
’64, ALEXANDRIA, VA. The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter and is stamped
slightly off the top of the envelope. The stamp and stamp cancellation are both
missing, there is a slight discoloration in the upper right corner where the stamp
had been. The postmark is black ink.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Annie Wilcox
Smyrna
Shenango Co
N.Y
The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side. Slight foxing along the
edges and very slight foxing on both faces. There is a light blue ink stain on the
center of the back, probably from the postmark/stamp cancellation of another
letter.
Three pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Embossed, in the upper right hand corners of pages one and
three, with a seal in the shape of a oval containing the word “PARIS” and
surrounded by filigree. Watermarked with ten horizontal lines. There is a very
small (<1/64”) hole where the lower of the two horizontal creases crosses the
single vertical crease. Ink appears unfaded. Very slight foxing, most evident
along the vertical crease and on page four. There are four creases: one vertical
and three horizontal. Folded size is 5” x 3”.
