14 December, 1864
William S. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Washington Street Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia
This letter was enclosed in a 4.[625]” x 2.625” white envelope, with a cancelled
three cent stamp in the upper right corner; postmarked Dec 22, ALEXANDRIA,
VA. The postmark is 15/16” in diameter and stamped partly off the top of the
envelope. The stamp cancellation consists of four concentric circles, the largest is
3/4” in diameter and the smallest is 3/16” in diameter. The postmark and stamp
cancellation are black ink.
Addressed in blue ink to:
Miss Annie Wilcox
Smyrna
Chenango [Co]
N.Y
The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side. The tear removed the right
quarter of the stamp and the ‘Co’ from ‘Chenango Co.’ Very slight foxing along
the edges. Front and back have one stray pencil mark each. Back has blue/black
staining in upper left quarter.
Three and one-half pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Embossed, in the upper right hand corners of pages one and
three, with a seal in the shape of a shield containing the words “GEORGE MC
DOWELL PHILA.” Watermarked with eleven horizontal lines. Ink appears
unfaded. Slight foxing. Large tan stain of unknown origin, probably water, along
second from top horizontal crease and outer two vertical creases. This stain
obliterates a line, or more of text on each of pages one, two, and three. There is
no corresponding stain on the envelope this letter was found in, however there is a
corresponding stain on an envelope, containing Letter 20, postmarked [???] 6,
Ale[xand]ria, VA. There are four creases: one vertical and three horizontal.
Folded size is 4.25” x 2.25”.

23 December, 1864
William S. Pike to Anna Wilcox
Washington Street Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia
This letter was enclosed in a 4.[625]” x 2.625” white envelope, with a cancelled
three cent stamp in the upper left corner; postmarked [???] 6, ALE[XAND]RIA,
VA. The postmark is 15/16” in diameter and overlays the stamp. The upper
portion of the stamp, along with part of the postmark has been torn off. The
stamp cancellation consists of four concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in
diameter and the smallest is 3/16” in diameter and stamped partly off the top of the
envelope. The postmark and stamp cancellation are black ink.
Addressed in blue ink to:
Miss Annie Wilcox
Smyrna
Chenango
N.Y. [?]
The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side. The tear removed any
writing to the right of ‘Chenango’ on line three and ‘N.Y. [?]’ on line four. Very
slight foxing along the edges. Front and back have a large tan stain of unknown
origin, probably water, along the bottom and right edge. This stain corresponds to
the stain on Letter 19, dated 14 December, 1864. The letter found in this
envelope has no corresponding stain.
Three pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in blue ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Embossed, in the upper right hand corners of pages one and
three, with a seal in the shape of a shield containing the words “GEORGE MC
DOWELL PHILA.” Watermarked with eleven horizontal lines. Ink appears
unfaded. Very slight foxing. There are six creases: three vertical and three
horizontal. Folded size is 4.25” x 2.5”.

This letter was enclosed in a 4.[75]” x 2.625” white envelope, with a cancelled
three cent stamp in the upper right corner; postmarked Dec 29, ALEXANDRIA,
VA. The postmark is 15/16” in diameter and overlays the stamp. Ink missing
from upper portion of the postmark: the middle ‘a’ in ‘Alexandria’ missing. The
stamp cancellation consists of four concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in
diameter and the smallest is 3/16” in diameter and stamped partly off right edge of
the envelope. The postmark and stamp cancellation are black ink.
Addressed in blue ink to:
Miss Annie Willcox
Smyrna
Chenango Co

The envelope was opened by cutting off the right side. The cut removed the right
edge of the stamp and part of the ‘o’ in ‘Co.’. Very slight foxing along the edges.
Three and one-half pages.
One 7.125” x 8.375” sheet folded to form four 4.125” x 7.125” pages.
Written in blue ink on blue lined stationery paper. Ink appears unfaded.
Very slight foxing. There are two very small (<1/64”) where the two horizontal
creases cross the single vertical crease. There are three creases: one vertical and
two horizontal. Folded size is 4.125” x 2.625”.

Posted from Fort No.5, Baltimore, Maryland
This letter was enclosed in a 5.25” x 2.75” white envelope, with cancelled three
cent stamp in the upper right hand corner of the envelope; postmarked May 14
‘64, BALTIMORE, MD. The postmark is incomplete, with portions of the central
characters missing. The postmark is 1 3/16” in diameter. The stamp cancellation
consists of four concentric circles, the largest is 3/4” in diameter and the smallest
is 3/16” in diameter. Both the postmark and the cancellation are blue ink and
slightly faded.
Addressed in black ink to:
Miss Anna Wilcox
Smyrna
Shenango Co
NY
The envelope was opened by cutting the left side. Slight foxing along the edges.
There is blue ink staining on the back of the envelope, likely from the postmarks
and cancellations of other letters. There is a black ink stain over the lower right
corner of the stamp. The upper right corner of the envelope is torn.
Three pages.
One 8” x 10” sheet folded to form four 5” x 8” pages.
Written in black ink on blue lined stationery paper, page four appears to
have been unlined. Embossed, in the upper right hand corners of pages one and
three, with a seal in the shape of a shield surmounted by a crown with a banner
below. Watermarked with eight horizontal lines. The ink is slightly faded. Very
slight foxing, only along the single vertical crease. There are three creases: one
vertical and two horizontal. Folded size is 5” x 2.75”.

Emory Wilcox to Anna Wilcox
Fort Federal Hill, Baltimore, Maryland.
This letter was enclosed in a 5.[25]” x 2.875” white envelope, with a cancelled
three cent stamp in the upper right corner; postmarked Ma[y] 4, BALTIMORE.
The postmark is 1.25” in diameter, blue ink, and overlays the stamp. The upper
left corner is occupied by an illustration of Fort Federal Hill in black ink. Printed,
in black ink, below the illustration:
FORT FEDERAL HILL, Baltimore, Md.

Garrisoned by 8th N. Y. Artillery,
Col. P. A. PORTER, commanding.
Addressed in blue ink to:
Miss Annie W
Smyrna
Chenango
N.
The envelope was opened by tearing off the right side. The tear removed the right
half of the stamp and postmark. Also torn off are most of the name ‘Wilcox,’ the
‘Co.’ from ‘Chenango Co.’ and the ‘Y’ from ‘N.Y.’ Very slight foxing along the
edges. There are blue ink stains on the back, probably from postmarks on other
letters.
Written in black ink, in a different hand, on the back:
Smyrna
June 10
Two and one-half pages.
One 7.5” x 9” sheet folded to form four 4.5” x 7.5” pages.
Written in two distinct black inks on blue lined stationery paper, page four
appears to have been unlined. The top of page one has “Co.B. 8th N.Y.Art.”
printed in black ink. The ink changes halfway down page two. The earlier ink is
more faded than the later ink. Very slight foxing, mostly along the single vertical

crease. The lower third of pages 3/4 has been cut away. There are three creases:
one vertical and two horizontal. Folded size is 4.5” x 2.625”.
