Aria of Cavaradossi, “Recondita armonia,”........... Giacomo Puccini
from Tosca, Act 1

(18581924)

is resting between her sheets:

of peace
across the paths of the sky:

Entranced  by  you,  by  the
sound of your voice,

Fly,

anguish of the world
in that dream.

turns between her sheets:
o serenade,
fly.

I dreamt at length;
and I forgot all the trouble and

C o m e  back,  dear  perfection,
come back for a moment
and smile on me again,
and a new dawn will shine o n
me
from your face.
L a  Serenata
Serenade

Fly,
o serenade:
my beloved is alone,
and  with  her  lovely  head
lying back,

o serenade :
my beloved is alone;
but, smiling, still half asleep,

The waves dream
on the shore,
the  wind  is  amid  the
branches;
my fair lady
still  denies  shelter  to  my
kisses!
On the shore
the waves dream...

Non t ’amo piu!
I love you no longer!
Do you remember the day we
met ;
do  you  still  remember  the
promises you made?
Madly  in  love,  I  followed
you, we fell in love,
and by your side I dreamed,
madly in love.
Happily I dreamed of endless
caresses and kisses
stretching  into heaven:
but your words were false,
for your soul is made of ice.
I no longer place my faith in
you now,

n o  more  are  yo u  m y   great

desire, or my dream of love:
I do not seek your kisses, nor
think of you;
I dream of another perfection;
I love you no longer.
Lo

In those  dear days we  spent
together,
I  strewed  your  path  with

flowers:
you were the single hope of
my heart;
the only thought in my mind.
You saw me beg, grow pale,

you saw  me weeping before
you:

I solely to satisfy your  least
desire,

would  have  given  my  blood
and my faith.
I no longer place m y faith in

you now,
no  more  are  you  my  great
desire, or my dream of love:
I do not seek your kisses, nor
think of you;
I dream of another perfection;

Hidden in this retreat
where God has led us,
united by misfortune,

during the long nights
we both rest

sleeping under their veils,
where we pray to the gazes
of the trembling stars!

Nina, you ’re to be wed,
and  yet  I  still  sing  my
serenade to you!
There, on the empty plains,
there, in the shady valley,

Oh! Do not awaken yet,
so the beautiful angel of your
dream
may  finish  unwinding  his
long thread of gold,
child, let it be complete.

how often I ’ve sung it to you!

Stindchen
Serenade
Softly through the  night  my
songs entreat you;
Come  down  to  me,
sweetheart, in the still glade!
Slender  treetops  rustle  and
whisper in the moonlight.
O, fair one, have no fear
of those who
might listen and betray!
Do  you  hear  the  singing  of
the nightingales?
Ah,  how  they  too  implore
you, with  the sound of their
sweet lament.

They know the  yearnings of
the soul,
the  pain  of  love,  and  touch
each gentle heart

with their silvery tones.

Then let your heart be stirred,

I, wretched  Atlas, must bear

sorrows.

I bear the unbearable,

and within my body my heart

would break.

O  arrogant  heart,  this  was

your desire!
You  wanted  happiness,
infinite happiness
or  infinite  misery; and now,
proud  heart,
misery!

In  this  house  lived  my
sweetheart who left the town

long  ago.  But  the  house  is
still in the same place.

A  man  stands  there,  staring
up at it, wringing his hands in
silent grief; I shudder as I see
his face –

for the moon reveals my own

Why  do  you  mimic  the

The FisherMaiden

Hidden ha rm on y

Hidden  harmony  of  diverse
beauties!
Floria,  my  ardent  lover,  is
dark,
and you, unknown beauty,
are  surrounded  with  blonde
hair.
You have blue eyes,
Tosca has black eyes!
Art in its mystery
mixes  the  diverse  beauties

together:

But in painting this wo m a n...

My only thought,
Ah! my only thought is you!
Tosca, is you!

Lay your dear head upon my
breast;
and do not be too afraid: you
who entrust
yourself each day to the sea
so free of care!
My  heart  is  just  like  the

ocean,

with its storms and ebbs and

flows;
and  in  its  depths  is  resting
many a beautiful pearl.

Spirate  pur, spirate

(W a ft, waft)
Waft, waft around my beloved one,
little breezes, and ascertain
if she holds me in her heart.
Waft, waft, little breezes!
If in her heart she holds me, ascertain
it, blessed breezes, breezes gentle and
blessed!

Vaghissima se mbianz a
(Most c harmin g sembla nce)
Most charming semblance

of my formerly loved woman,
who, then, has portrayed you with such
a likeness
that I gaze, and speak, and believe to
have you
before me as in the Beautifil days of
love?

Amorosi miei giorni
(My loving days)

My loving days,
who could ever forget you
now that, beautifled by all the
blessings,

you giv e peace  to my  heart

and perfume to my thoughts?
To be able thus, as long as
life moves on,

not to fear any longer the anxieties

of a life of deceits,
only with this hope:
that a glance of his be all my splendor
and a smile of his be all my treasure!
Who more blessed than I,
if next to him he has not thus
a sweet and dear beloved object,

a n  t L
so that h
e still ca n not sa y

he knows what love is?
Ah, may I thus, as long as life moves
on,

no more fear the anxieties
of a life of deceits,
only with this hope:
that a glance of his be all my splendor
and a smile of his be all my treasure!

The cherished memory

wiiich in my h e a rtnas bee

so ardently

has already revived hope there,
so that a kiss, a vow, a cry of love
I no longer ask except of her who is
forever silent.

Frage u nd Antwort
(Question and  Answer)
As long as I will ask you, “Do you love
me, oh my love?”
you should say to me, “I love you, oh
my love!”
If I ask with glances, “Do you love me,
oh my love?”
you should answer with kisses, “I love
you, oh my love!”
And if a sigh asks you,  “Do yo u love

me, oh my love?”
your smile should reply, “I love you,
oh my love!”

Selige N acht
(Blissful Night)
In the arms of love we fell blissfully
asleep.
The summer wind eavesdropped at the
open window

and carried the peace of our breathing
into
the brightly moonlit night.
And from the garden a scent of roses
cautiously found its way to our bed of
love
and gave us wonderful dreams,
dreams of ecstasy, so full of desire.

Otto Erich Hartleben

Nachtgebet
(Night P rayer)
Oh, if you saw me praying now
to your deep, holy eyes
that plead to me as if asking for love, i
you would close your deep eyes
so I would not lose myself in them as
in love.
Oh, if you saw me praying
to your soul, cheerful like a child,
that childlike soul would be silent
so that it would not drown in my love.
Stindch en
(Serenade)

Good night, beloved life.
I call into your little window
and then I will go on my way.
Ah! Think of me in your dreams!
Because you surely know that,

devoted  to you, my heart must

quiver in torment.
Good night, beloved life.
Ah! Think of me in your dreams!
Paul Heyse

Chi sa, chi sa, qual sia, K.582
(Who knows, who knows
what it may be)
Who knows, who knows what
it may be that torments my beloved?
Is it anger, jealousy,
fear, suspicion or love?

O gods, ye who know

the purity of my affection,

dispel this bitter doubt
from m y  heart.

Si mes vers avai ent des ailes
(If my verses ha d wings)
My verses would flee, sweet and frail,
To your garden so beautiful,
If my verses had wings
Like the bird!
They would fly, glittering,
To your cheery fireside,
If my verses had wings
Like the wind!
To you, pure and faithful,
They would hasten, night and day,
If my verses had wings,
Like love!
Victor Hugo

A Ch loris
(To Chloris)
If it be true, Chloris, that you
do love me,

And I have heard, you love me well,
Then kings themselves I do believe
Could hardly match my wealth.
Death would be most inopportune
To come and alter my good fortune
Just to please the heaven!

Say what you will about ambrosia—
It can hardly compare to the magic
Of your eyes bestowing their gaze on
me.

Théophile de Viau

L ’Enamourée
(The Beloved)
They say, my dove
That you dream, though still dead,
Beneath the stone of the tomb :
Yet for this soul who adores you,

You awaken, enlivened,
Oh, my pensive beloved!

Through nights whitened by stars,
In the murmuring breeze,
I caress your long veils,

Your long flowing tresses,

And your halfclosed wings

That flutter ab ove t he roses.

Oh, sweet delight, I breathe in
Your divine blond locks :
Your pure voice  that lyre
Follows the wave upon the currents,
And softly glides over them,
Glides over them softly

Like a swan that weeps!
Théophile de Banville

Paysage
(A D istant Sho re)
On a shore resounding with the roar of

the sea,
There is a little hidden corner of

Brittany,
Where I would love so much to take
you one day,
When the autumn leaves are falling,
my darling!

You would see oaktrees encircling a
fountain,

A fe w scattercd beeches, and an old,

deserted mill,
And even a well in whose clear water
is reflected
The green of your siren’s eyes...
In the morning, out from under a
yellowed leaf,
The titmouse would come and sing for
us alone...
And the sea itself, at night and during
the day,
Would join each time in our loving
embraces,
From the depths of its bottomless soul!
André Theuriet

PROGRAM NOTES

PROGRAM

Réverie, Op. 24 is a  piece written for horn and piano by
Alexander  Glazunov.  Glazunov  composed  this  piece  in
Réverie, Op. 24..................................................Alexander Glazunov
(18651936)

1890 around the time that he had a creative crisis despite his
international fame.  He grew out of this period with a new
maturity.  It is a possibility that this “reverie” of his was his
dream to come out of that hard time with a newfound spirit.

Horn Concerto No. 4 i n  Eflat major, K .  495 is the last in
the collection of horn concerti written by Wolfgang Amadeus

Mozart and was completed in 1786.  All of the horn concerti
were written for Joseph Leutgeb, a Salzburgborn musician,
who was the premier horn player of the classical period.
After one month  of working  as  a  court musician  for the
Esterhazy family, for unknown reasons, Leutgeb moved to

Salzburg  in  1763  and  became  part  of  the  musical
establishment of the ruling PrinceArchbishop.  It was there
and then that he became a colleague Leopold Mozart, the
father of Wolfgang, and then met Wolfgang himself. The two
became good friends and, as can be seen in the original
manuscript  of  this  concerto,  the  notes  are  written  in
multicolored inks in a jocular attempt to rattle the performer.
Recently, it has been suggested that it was a color code of
some sort.  In the final movement of the piece, the jumpy
texture and playfulness of the tune shows that Mozart indeed
wished to have fun with his good friend.

Fugue i n  G minor, BWV 578 is a piece written originally for
organ by Johann Sebastian Bach and is believed to have
been  composed  ca.  1707  possibly  during  his  years  at
Arnstadt.  The significance of Arnstadt is that it was where
Bach began his musical career.  The fugue’s subject is one
of Bach’s most recognizable tunes and has been transcribed
for many  other  instrumentations,  the  most  famous  being
Leopold  Stokowski’s  transcription  for  orchestra.  Today,
Robert Muller has prepared his transcription of this piece for
horn quartet.

Zion hort die Wachter singen (Zion heard the Watchmen
singing) is a chorale from J.S. Bach’s Wachet auf, ruft uns
die Stimme, BWV 140 (also known as Sleepers, Wake). The
cantata was premiered on November 25, 1731.  The fourth
movement,  Zion  hort  die  Wéchter  singen,  was  originally
written for strings, tenor chorus, and continuo.  Since the
piece’s text is associated with the themes of Advent, it is
commonly  performed  during  that  season.  Robert  Muller
transcribed this movement for horn, cello, and piano, and,
along  with  Alex  Muller,  cello,  and  Nickie  Collins,  piano,
performed it on  January 1, 2010 at St. Martin de Porres :
church in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Horn Concerto No. 1 i n  Eflat major, Op. 11 is the first
horn concerto written by Richard Strauss.  It was written in
1883 for his father, Franz Strauss, who, at the time, was the
principal horn for the Munich court orchestra.  It was first
performed in 1888 for horn and piano by a student of Franz
Strauss,  Bruno  Hoyer, with Richard  as the pianist.  This
piece, along with Mozart’s concerti, has secured a place in
horn repertoire and still remains a favorite of many players
today.

PROGRAM TEXTS
Friihlingsmorgen
(Sprlng Morning)
There taps at the window the
linden tree
With branches, blossomladen:
Arise! Arise!
Why do you lie in a dream?
The sun has come up!
Arise! Arise!
And what is more, I saw your merry
sweetheart already.
Arise, you sleepyhead!
Sleepyhead, arise!
Arise! Arise!
Das Veilchen
(The Violet)
A little violet
Stood on the meadow
Bent over itself,
And unknown
Along came a shepherdess
With light step and air,
And sang
“Ah!” (Thought the little violet)
“Were I the most beautiful bloom of
nature
Ah! If she were to press me to her
bosom for just a quarter hour!”
Ah! The maiden came!
And paid no attention
To the little violet
It sank and withered
But rejoiced
For even though he died,
He died at herfeet
Wie Melodien
(Like Melodies)
Like melodies it moves,

Gently through my mind ;

Like spring flowers it blooms,
And wafts away like fragrance.
Then comes language and
grasps it,
And draws it before my eyes,
Like a gray mist it pales,

And disappears like a breath.
And yet, remaining in poetry
There hides a fragrance still,
Which mildly from the quiet bud
My moist eyes call forth.
Nacht und Traume
(Night and Dreams)
Hallowed night, you sink down!
Downward float also the
dreams,
like your moonlight, through
space,
through the silent bosom of
men.
They listen to you with pleasure
cry out, when the day breaks:
Come back, hallowed night;
lovely dreams, come ba ck.
Traum durch die Dammerung
(Dream through the twilight)
Wide meadows in the twilight’s
gray;
The sun is sunk, the stars are

moving,
Now I go there to the loveliest
women,
Far over meadows in the twilight’s
gray,
Deep into bushes of jasmine.
Through the twilight’s gray in love’s
land;
I do not go quickly, I do not hurry.
I am drawn by a soft, velvet band
Through the twilight’s gray in Iove’s
land,
Into a blue, mild light.
Trauma
(Dreams)
Tell me, what kind of wondrous
dreams
Are embracing my senses,
That have not, like seafoam,
Vanished into desolate
Nothingness?

Dreams, that with each passing

houn

Each passing day, bloom fairer,
And with their heavenly tidings
Roam blissfully through my heart!

Dreams which, like holy rays of
light
Sink into the soul,
There to paint an eternal image:
Forgetting all, remembering.
Dreams which, when the Spring
sun
Kisses the blossoms from the

Oh flee! Oh flee! You don‘t know
who I am.’

So richly adorned is horse and
lady,
So wondrously beautiful is the

young body;
Now I know you, God stand with
me!
You are witch, Loreley!
You have recognized me from the
high cliffs,
My castle gazes silently deep into

the Rhine.

It is already late, it has become

cold,

snow,

You will never again come out of
this forest!

So that they grow, so that they
bloom, and dreaming, bestow their
fragrance,
These dreams gently glow and
fade on your breast,
And then sink into the grave.

Kommt ein schlanker Bursch
gegangen
(When a slim guy comes along)
When a slim guy comes along,
Blond haired or brown,
Bright eyed, rosycheeked,
Yeah, one can take a good look at
him!
Sure, one drops her eyes towards
her bodice,
In the bashful maiden’s manner;
But stealthily lifts one’s eyes,
When the little man is not looking
Should your glances find each

So that into unsuspected bliss
They greet the new day,

Weldseligkelt
(Forest Bliss)
The forest begins to rustle,
night descends upon the trees
as if they blissfully eavesdrop,
gently touching each other.
And under their branches
here I am completely alone,
here I am completely myself,
yet completely yours.

Waldgesprach
(Conversation in  the woods)
“It is already late, it is already cold,
Why do you ride alone in the
woods?
The woods are large and you are
alone,

You beautiful bride! I will lead you
here!
‘The deceit and cunning of men is
great,
My heart is broken from pain
There strays the forest horn here
and there,

other,

Now, where’s the harm in that?
No one‘s going to turn blind on the
spot,
Even if someone turns a little red.
A little glance here and a little
glance there,
Till the mouth becomes just as
bold!
He sighs: Beautiful! She says:
Lovey!
Soon they’re called bride and
groom.
Come closer, dear little people!
Do you want to see me with a
bridal wreath,
Well, isn’t that a nice little bride,
And the guy no less beautiful?

Die Manner sind méchant

O would it were gone again!

leave.

Men are faithless, you told me,
mother:
He’s a young rascal!
I wouldn’t believe you
Until I had tormented myself sick.
Yes, now I know he really is,
I’d simply misjudged him.
You told me, mother.

Der Leiermann
(The hurdygurdy men)
There, behind the village,
stands a hurdygurdyman,
And with numb fingers
he plays the best he can.

Der Tod und das Madchen
(Death and the Maiden)
(Das Madchen)
Vomber, ach, vorliber!
Geh, wilder Knochenmann
Ich bin noch jung, geh. Lieber!
Und rithre mich nicht an.

(Men are naughty)

‘Men are faithless!‘

Yesterday, as dusk fell silently,
In the grove outside the village
I heard a whispered ‘Good
evening!‘
And a whispered ‘Many thanks!‘
I crept up and listened,
Stood there as if transfixed:
It was he, with another
‘Men are faithless!‘
O mother, what torture!
It must be said, it must!
It didn’t just stop at whispering,
It didn’t just stop at greetings!
From greetings it went to kisses.
From kisses to holding hands,
From holding hands . . . ah, dear

mother,
‘Men are faithless!‘

Das verlassene Mégdlein

(The forsaken maiden)
Early, when the cock crows,
before the stars disappear.
I must stand at the hearth;
I must light the fire.

Beautiful is the blaze of the flames;
the sparks fly.
I gaze into the fire,
sunk in grief.
Suddenlyl it  comes to  me,

Barefoot on the ice,
he staggers back and forth,
And his little plate
remains ever empty.
No one wants to hear him,
no one looks at him,
And the hounds snarl
at the old man.
And he lets it all go by,
everything as it will,
He plays, and his hurdygurdy
is never still.
Strange old man,
shall I go with you?
Will you play your hurdygurdy
to my songs?
Herbstlied
(Autumn song)
Ah, how so soon the cycle ends,
Spring turns into wintertime!
Oh how so soon into moumful
Silence
All happiness turns as well!
Soon the last sounds have faded!
Soon the last songbirds have
flown!
Soon the last green is gone away!
All of them want to return home!
Ah, how so soon the cycle ends,
Happiness turns into yearning pain.

unfaithful boy,
that last night
I dreamed of you.

Were you a dream, you thoughts of
love?
Sweet as spring and fast

Tears upon tears then
pour down;
So the day comes

One, only one thing will never
waver:
It is the yearning that will never

vanishing?

(Der Tod)
Gib deine Hand, du schon und zart
Gebild!
Bin Freund und komme nicht zu
strafen.
Sel gutes Muts! ich bin nicht wild,
Sollst sanft in meinen Armen
schlafen!

Anakreons Grab
(Anakreon’s Grave)

Here, where the rose still blooms,
Where the vines and laurel
entwine,
Where the turtledove coos,
Where the grasshopper rejoices,
What grave is here, which all the
gods have adorned with beautiful
living plants?
It is Anakreon’s resting place.
Spring, Summer and Autumn were
enjoyed by the happy poet,
And he was shielded from the
Winter by the hills.

Loreley
(Loreley)
I don’t know what it means,
Why I feel so sad;
An old tale,
Won’t leave my mind.
The air is cool and dark
And Rein flows peacefully

The top of the rocks
Sparkle in the evening sunshine
The most beautiful maiden sits
Atop it, sorrowfully;
Her golden jewels twinkle;
She combs her golden hair,

She combs it with a golden comb,
And sings a song
It has a wondrous, powerful
melody
A sailor in a little ship,
Is seized with wild pain
He doesn’t see the rocky reef,
He looks up at her in the end
I think the waves swallow
And kill the sailor and his boat
And that, with her singing,
The Loreley has done
Ioh harrete des Herrn
(I waited for the Lord)
I waited for the Lord,
And he leaned down to me
And heard my prayer.
Blessed are they who put their
hope in the Lord!
Blessed are they who put their
hope in Him!
Seligkeit
(Bliss)
Joys without number
bloom in heaven’s hall
of angels and transfigured beings,
just as ourfathers taught us.
0 ,  there I would like to be
and rejoice forever!
Upon everyone dearly smiles

a heavenly bride;
harp and psalter resound,
and everyone dances and sings.
0,  there I would like to be
and rejoice forever!
But I‘d rather remain here

i f  L aura would smile a t  m e

with one glance that said
I should end my lamenting.
Blissfully then with her,
I would stay here forever!

Dein ist mein ganzes Herz

{My heart is yours alone)
My heart is yours alone!
I cannot be without you.
Like a flower that wilts
when unkissed by the sun!
My most beautiful song is yours,
for it is created out of love.
Tell me once more, my one and
only.
oh tell me once more:
I love you!
Wherever I am
I feel you are near.
I want to drink your breath
and kneel adoringly at your feet,
yours, yours alone! How wonderful
your shining hair is!
Dreamy and full of longing
is your radiant gaze
Full of dreams and ancient longing
When I hear your voice,
it is like music
My whole heart is yours.

Wldmung
(Dedication)
You my soul, you my heart.
You my bliss. o you my pain,
You the world in which I live;
You my heaven. in which I float,
O you my grave. into which I
eternally cast my grief.
You are rest, you are peace,
You are bestowed upon me from
heaven.
That you love me makes me
worthy of you;
Your gaze transfigures me before
you;
You raise me lovingly above
myself,
My good spirit, my better self!
Lachen und Weinen
(Laughing and weeping)
Laughing and weeping, at
whatever hour,
are based, in the case of love.
on so many different reasons.

Every morning I laughed for joy;
and why I now weep
in the evening’s glow
is even to myself unknown.
Weeping and laughing, at

whatever hour,

are based, in the case of love. on
so many different reasons.
Evenings I have wept for
sorrow;
and how can you wake up
in the morning with laughing.
must I ask you. oh heart.
Unbewegte Iaue Luft

(Motionless. warm air)

Motionless, warm air,
Deep rest of nature;
Through the still gardennight
Only the fountain splashes.
But in my heart there surges
Hot desires,
But in my veins swells
Life. and a longing for life.
Should not also your breast
Lift itself to longing wishes?
Should not the call of my soul
Reverberate deeply in yours?
Softly, with ethereal steps.
Do not tarry to float to me!
Come, oh come, so that we might
Give each other heavenly
satisfaction!
Zueignung
(Dedication)
Yes, you know it, dearest soul,
How I suffer far from you,
Love makes the heart sick.
Have thanks.
Once I, drinker of freedom.
Held high the amethyst beaker,
And you blessed the drink,
Have thanks.
And you exorcised the evils in it.
Until I, as I had never been before.
Blessed, blessed sank upon your
heart,

Have thanks.

Iron and steel can be recast by the

Von ewiger Liebe
( Of eternal love)
Dark, how dark it is in the forest

But who would transform our love?
Iron and steel can melt;
Our love, our love will have to last

and field!
Night has fallen; the world now is
silent.

Nowhere a light and nowhere

smoke.

Yes, now even the lark is silent.
From yonder village there comes
the young lad,
Taking his beloved home.
He leads her past the willow
bushes,
Talking so much, and of so many
things:
“If you suffer shame and if you
grieve.
If you suffer disgrace before others
because of me,
Then our love shall be ended ever
so fast
As fast as we once came together;
It shall go with the rain and go with
the wind,
As fast as we once came together.”
Then says the maiden, the maiden
says:
“Our love shall never end!
Steel is firm and iron is firm,
Yet our love is firmer still.

smith

forever!”

Hat dich die Llebe bertlhrt
(If love has touched you)
If love has touched you,
quietly amidst the noisy crowds,
you will walk on a golden cloud,
safely guided by God.

As if lost,

you let you glances wander,
allowing others to enjoy their
pleasures
while you have only one desire.
Timidly repressing your ecstasy,
you attempt, in vain, to deny
that the crown of life now
radiantly adorns your brow.
“Wohl mir, dass ich Jesum
habe”
(Happy am I, to have my Jesus)
Happy am I, to have my Jesus,
oh how firmly I hold on to him
so that he may refresh my heart
when I am sick and sorrowful,
I have Jesus, who loves me
and gives himself to me.
Ah therefore I shall not abandon
Jesus
even if my heart breaks.
