Stephen McKiernan's collection of interviews includes more than two hundred interviews with prominent figures of the 1960s, which were collected between the mid-1990s to 2023 The collection provides narratives of people who were actively involved in or witnessed events in the 1960s, an era which spurred profound cultural and political transformation in the twentieth century. Interviewees include politicians, artists, scholars, musicians, authors, and veterans who delve into the decade’s most prominent issues and events, including the civil rights movement, the free speech movement, the anti-war movement, women’s rights, gay rights, segregation, the Vietnam War, Woodstock, Hippies, Yippies, and individualism.<br /><br />

Biographical Text
Pat Reuss is a longtime feminist with many leadership roles, both nationally and locally including the National Organization of Women. She is currently Acting Vice President for the Virginia NOW State Officers. Among the leadership positions, she has served: NOW Senior Policy Analyst-2002-present; Head of the Legal Defense and Education Fund-NOW; Legislative Director for the Women's Equity League NOW-1986-1990; Former Washington, DC NOW Office Director; President, Women's Equity Action League-1979-1980. Reuss played a major role as organizer of the National Task Force To End Sexual and Domestic Violence which was instrumental in passing the 1994 Violence Against Women Act.

<p>The Binghamton Community Poets were founded in 1983 by native Binghamton poet, educator, and Harpur College alum Richard Martin. That year he started the <em>The Big Horror Reading Series</em> at a local coffee house. People associated with the series changed throughout the years but always included local writers who were dedicated to the idea of creating a space where literary art could flourish. For fourteen years, readings took place at various venues around the Triple Cities featuring nationally and internationally known writers while continuing to provide “open mike” time for local community writers and sometimes musicians. The series received funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, the Broome County Arts Council, and Poets and Writers, Inc., as well as public donations.<br /><br />Many of the readings between 1987 and 1996 were videotaped. Some of the writers who are featured on the videotapes include (in alphabetical order) Tish Benson, Charles Bernstein, Barney Bush, Wally Butts, Adrian Clarke, Suzanne Cleary, Robert Creeley, Joel Dailey, Jim Daniels, Jack Dann, Diane di Prima, Safiya Henderson-Holmes, Lance Henson, Bob Holman, Pierre Joris, Dave Kelly, Sylvia Kelly, Bill Kemmett, Peter Kidd, Dorianne Laux, Ed Ochester, Kate Rushin, Pamela Sargent, Patricia Smith, Lloyd Van Brunt. Also featured are former and current members of the Binghamton University faculty (in alphabetical order): David Bartine, Martin Bidney, Milton Kessler, Bob Mooney, Liz Rosenberg, Jerome Rothenberg, John Vernon. People associated with the series at one time or another (in alphabetical order): Ken Bovee, Alexis Cacyuk, Jerry Caswell, Tom Costello, Gerry Crinnin, Terry Day, Paul Dean, Zack Grabosky, Tom Haines, Connie Head, Michael Kelly, Tom Kolpakas, Richard Martin, Kate McQueen, John Miller, Bern Mulligan, Doug Paugh, Susan Prezzano, Phil Sweeney, Mike Tarcha. Venues for recorded readings (in chronological order): Swat Sullivan’s Hotel*, Benlin’s, Mad Murphy’s, The Tazmanian Embassy, The Amsterdam, Java Joe’s, Amp’s.<br /><br />The collection also <a href="https://omeka.binghamton.edu/omeka/collections/show/31">includes twelve excerpted poems</a> that serve as an introduction. They are linked not only to the full individual readings in Rosetta but also to the catalog records for the books in which they are published. This creates a unique convergence experience, as the catalog record “comes alive” and users can see the writer and hear a poem from the book before they take it off the shelf to read.</p>
<p><strong>Digitization and DVD Production</strong> <br />After the series ended in 1996, the videotapes sat in boxes for ten years. In 2006, since they were most likely degrading and losing both video and audio fidelity, a Memorandum of Understanding between the BCP and the Libraries was agreed on and the process of converting the videotapes to DVD-quality MPEG files for preservation and access purposes was begun. Many of them had glitches and dead spots and several others were not originals but copies, further adding to loss of video and audio fidelity. After the conversion, both the video and audio quality were enhanced to a degree from what was on the tapes. Phase Two involved producing individual DVDs from the MPEG files. The files were literally “raw”: they started when the camera was turned on and continued without interruption until it was turned off, which meant there was often video of silent microphones and audio of irrelevant crowd noises and conversations. Editing these out made the DVDs much better than the raw files. <br /><br /><strong>Preservation and Expanded Access</strong> <br />Due to copyright restrictions, the DVDs have been housed in Special Collections and had to be viewed there. This has definitely curtailed their usage. However, a recent development in Rosetta, our digital preservation system, has allowed us to offer a new form of access. Rosetta added a built-in video viewer, which allows the videos to be both preserved and streamed at the same time. In order to accomplish this, the DVDs had to be converted to MP4s to be compatible with the new viewer. The streaming versions are copies of the DVDs, which is why they contain menus and chapters which are not functional but are continuous play. The streaming versions will allow more users to be able to view and listen to this diverse, wide-ranging collection of readings. <strong>(N.B.: They are only accessible on campus or via campus VPN.)</strong><br /><br />*The image on the item records is the iconic Swat Sullivan's Hotel, which was located on Binghamton's South Side. Swat's was the venue for the earliest readings in the video collection. The building was torn down in 1990. Paul Hersh attended Yale University and studied piano with Eduard
Steuermann and Leonard Shure. As violist of the Lenox String Quartet,
he has concertized extensively in the United States, Canada, and Europe.
He has been artistinresidence and a member of the faculty of the
Berkshire Music Center, the Aspen Music Festival,the Spoleto Festival,
Lecturer in Music at Grinnell College, and is at present artistinresi
dence and member of the faculty at Harpur College, SUNY Binghamton.

�Organist, conductor, and composer PAUL JORDAN
has performed in more than twenty states of
the Union and in over a hundred cities in West
Germany (and West Berlin), Sweden, Holland,
Austria and Cuba, including the cathedrals of
Vienna, Freiburg, Schleswig, and Tréves. He
has appeared on the radio in Frankfurt, Hannover,
and Berlin, and at home on the nationwide CBS
television network, and has recorded for Kapp,
Classic Editions, and Decca. Jordan ’s doutle
album rendition of J.S. Bach ’s complete
“Orgelbiichlein” appeared last Fall under the
Orngeldokumente (Organ Documents) label in Berlin,
and has been nominated by the German Phono
Akademie for the German recording industry ’s
annual organ prize (Deutscher Schallplattenpredis).
Recitals in the Summer of 1977 will take Jordan
to France and Switzerland. A noted pedagogue,
he has taught at Yale University and Sarah
Lawrence College, and served as Director of Music
at New Haven‘s historic United Church on the Green,
before joining the faculty of SUNY–Binghamton.

�PROGRAM NOTES
Despite being listed as Opus 65, Beethoven's concert aria Ah, Perfido is a
product of a young artist still feeling his way in the world of composition . In
1796, the twenty-five-year old Beethoven, having left Bonn for Vienna ju t two
years before, had established himself first as a brilliant solo pianist, and only
secondarily as a composer. Beethoven had studied with both Haydn and Salieri,
and was assiduously studying and copying the works of Mozart and other
contemporaries in order to gain insight into fonn and the technique of writing
for instruments and voices. It was during his first concert trip to Prague early in
the year that he set the Metastasio text of Ah, Perfido for the soprano Josepha
Dussek, using as his models Mozart's Bella mia fiamma (also composed for
Dussek) and Haydn's Scena di Berenice (written the previous year). The work,
originally entitled "An Italian Scene", is set as a recitative and aria. To reflect
the high emotional tenor of the text, Beethoven employs no fewer than seven
different tempi in the recitative. The tranquil aria in E-flat Major forms the
middle section, after which the vocal fulminations extend through another seven
increasingly demanding and virtuosic sections, culminating in a brilliant
operatic conclusion.
Anton Bruckner may be best remembered for his symphonic works, but his
sacred choral works were a significant part of his overall output. His a cappella
motets, in particular are treasured by choral music lovers for their rich text ures
and renaissance spirit colored by the highly chromatic and complex harmonic
developments of his Germanic contemporaries. His setting of Psalm 150,
however, was never intended for religious use, and indeed its intimidating vocal
demands and large orchestra carry it far beyond the nonnal worship setting. The
work was commissioned originally as a celebratory occasional piece for the
opening of a theatrical exhibition. The first performance in November of 1892
was apparently under-rehearsed, poorly executed, and badly received by the
public and the critics who quickly labeled the work "impossible" and
"unperformable" due to its extreme range and dynamic demands. The choral
sopranos are required to sing no less than eleven high B-flats and at one point a
sustained high C. Similar incredible demands are made on the tenor section.
The chorus is freque ntly divided into eight or nine separate vocal parts. A
highly chromatic fugal section near the end poses particular challenges and the
string and wind parts are equally difficult. It remains one of the compos,er' s
most brilliant and difficult choral/orchestral compositions.
By the decade of the 1930' s, Ralph Vaughan Williams had achieved the stature
of a leading elder statesman in English music. Even so, major changes in his
compositional style were taking place which led to new and remarkable
developments in his later compositions over the next decades until his death in
1958. The cantata Dona nobis pacem, completed in 1936, was created in an
environment of the gathering political storm on the European continent. It is
. less known than some of his other choral and vocal works, and certainly is less
�familiar to modem audiences than its close cousin, the War Requiem of
Vaughan Williams' younger compatriot, Benjamin Britten. Yet the work is a
masterpiece in the relatively small repertoire of works written against war.
Its liturgical title notwithstanding, Dona nobis pacem is not a religious work in
the traditional sense. Vaughan Williams used the two lines of liturgical Latin
text from the Mass as his beginning point (and eventually his point of return),
but for the bulk of the work, the composer chose the words of one of his poetic
idols, Walt Whitman, whose civil war era poetry collection "Drum Taps"
contained insightful and lyrical observations of war and the horrors of war.
The work opens with the liturgical cry for piece by the soprano soloist and
chorus. Under the final measures of the opening movement, however, the
distant rumbling of drums is heard, and an urgent bugle call introduces
Whitman's "Beat! Beat! Drums" describing in graphic and apocalyptic terms a
relentless and merciless march of death and destruction. No one is to be spared
- not the worshiper or the scholar, not the young or the old. Brass and
percussion increase in intensity to a terrible climax at the words "so strong you
thump O terrible drums, so loud you bugles blow," and then fade into the
distance as the strings carry the listener forward into the third movement.
"Reconciliation" begins with a lyrical baritone solo "Word over all, beautiful as
the sky, Beautiful that war and all its deeds of carnage must in time be utterly
lost." The reconciliation is between two enemies, one now the "white face in
the coffin", the other realizing this was "a man divine as myself."
A brief recapitulation of the opening "Dona nobis pacem" carries the music into
"The Dirge for Two Veterans." The blaring bugle calls and rattling drums of the
second movement are transformed into a distant slow march. The "silvery
round moon" looks down on the funeral procession for two veterans - son and
father --who fell together in battle are to be buried in a double grave.
Movement five begins with the baritone intoning a brief passage from a speech
by John Bright, a nineteenth century English statesman and member of
Parliament. Known as a brilliant and powerful orator, his reference to the Old
Testament Passover story sets the stage for the biblical passages that follow.
The Jeremiah passage that follows represents the pivotal moment in the cantata.
"We looked for peace, but no good came .. .Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there
no physician there?" The hopeless searching is answered finally by the baritone
soloist at the beginning of the final movement proposing that peace; indeed, is
the promise and hope, and the cantata ends with a choral fugue comprised of
short passages from various Old Testament books, and ending with the only
New Testament passage, the famous Luke 2 passage from the Christmas story,
"Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth, peace, good will toward men."
