Notes  on  String  Quartet  No. 4

by
Ezra  Laderman

String  Quartet  No. 4,  commissioned  by  the  Lenox  String  Quartet, was
completed  in  August  of  1974.  The  Quartet  is  in  one  continuous  movement with
four  connected  sections.  The  fi rs t  section  is  a  series  of  ever–extending
soloistic  phrases  against which  subsidiary  material  underscores  the  qualities
found  in  each  solo.  These  solos  emerge  as  four  distinct  characters :  Violin
I, whose  dynamic  range  is  from  ppp  to  ff f ,  whose  gesture  is  romantic,  whose
tempi  is  andante/rubato, whose  sound  is  warm  and  expressive, whose  attitude
is  quixotic,  whose  harmonic  language  is  chromatic  and  whose  meter  is  5/4 and
its  derivatives;  Violin  II has  a  dynamic  range  that  is  either  piano  or  mezzo
forte  or forte,  its  gesture  is  nee–classic,  its  tempo  is  very  strict, its
sound  is  secco (dry),  its  attitude  is  cool  yet  satiric,  its  harmonic  language
is  astringent (dissonant within  a  tonal  compass),  its  meter  2/4 (6/8);  the
Viola ’s  dynamic  range  has  sudden  dramatic  shifts  and  levels  of  intensity, his
gesture  is  expressionistic,  the  tempo  has  violent  extremes,  the  sound  encom–
passes  a  totality  of  possibilities,  the  attitude  is  dramatic  and  destructive,
the  harmonic  language  is  aleatoric,  pointillistic  as  well  as  modal, and  the

meter  is  free;  the  Cello ’s  dynamic  range  is  well  defined for  each  of  its

sections,  its  gesture  is  nee–baroque,  its  tempo  is  fl owing  (never–ending),
its  sound  is  rich  and  expansive,  its  attitude  is  compassionate,  its  harmonic

language  is  triadic  fourths  and  fif ths and  its  meter  is  3/4 (9/8).

At  the  end  of  the  last  solo  taken  by  the  Cello,  the  Viola  suddenly  ¢
emerges, forming  a  transitional  passage  into  the  second  section  of  the  quartet.
The  second  section  is  a  series  of  four  duets  pitting  the  contrasting  elements
against  each  other;  the  fi rs t  duet  engages  the  two  Violins,  the  second  duet
the  Viola  and  Cello,  the  third  duet  the  Violin  I  and  the  Cello  and  the  last
duet  the  Violin  II  and  the  Viola.  It  is  during  the  last  duet  that  the  third
and  then  the  fourth  voice  joins..  The  third  section  begins  at  a  point (measure
199) when  the  four  voices  are  for  the  fi rs t  time  equal.  The  four  voices  at
fi rs t  go  their  separate  ways.  Perceptively  though,  they  begin  and  do  merge
(measure  223) forming  a  unified  oneness  that  lasts  for  one  glorious  moment
(an  infinity).   The  differing  lines  compress  until  the  fi nal  contour  of  a new
evolved  line  emerges (measure  275).  The  new  phrase  established, a series  of
propulsive  variants  explodes,  exhalting  in  the  moment,  culminating  and  ending

at  measure  384.

The  transfigura tion  of  the  material  over, only  the  underlining  figurations
from  Section  1  remain.  The  concluding  section  is  concerned  with  the  attempt
to  organize  these  subsidiary  gestures  into  recognizable  structures.  These
shapes  become  fewer  and  fewer  until  all  are  disintegrated,  gone.  The  coda
(measure  425) is  a  recall,  a  tear,  a  moment  suspended  in  time.
