About the Conductors
Rob Magee is a Junior Music major studying piano with Jody Schum.
He hopes to focus on conducting and vocal accompaniment and one
-day work as a music director on Broadway (or something equally
prestigious). He would like to thank Dr.'s Borton, Perry, Rolls,
Goldstaub, and Reardon for fostering his passion for the divine art
of music.

Deanna Bunal, originally from Lee Center NY, is a Senior at
Binghamton University. Her specialization is voice, under the tutelage of Mary Burgess. She will be graduating this spring with a B.A.
in Music and plans to continue on to Syracuse University where she
will pursue an MST in Music Education.

Nicole Kalisz is a Senior Music (B.A.) and Biology (B.S.) major. She
plays the flute and piano and is a member of the University Wind
Ensemble. Originally from Buffalo, she will be teaching math next
year in New York City under the NYC Teaching Fellows program.

Cari Begeal, a native of Bath, NY, is a Junior at Binghamton. She is
double majoring in Political Science and Music, with a minor in
Spanish. She currently studies voice with Mary Burgess, and is a
member of the University Chorus. After graduation she plans on
pursuing a career in choral conducting. Cari would like to dedicate
this performance to her mother.

Ryan Bagg is a Senior Music major from Vestal. He plays guitar and
is the musical director of the Binghamton Crosbys. Ryan is currently
applying to graduate school to pursue a degree in Music Education.

Alex Wiesendanger is a Senior Music and Political Science double
major. He would like to thank Professors Borton and Perry for their

hard work, as well as Professors Stalker, Sunwoo, Goldstaub, Loy
and Reardon for all their support, and his parents for forcing music
on him when he was three. Finally he would like to thank the
orchestra for putting up with him.

Emily Creo, a native of Vestal, is a Junior Music major studying both
cello and voice. Emily is a member of the University Orchestra and
Harpur Chorale. She credits her enthusiasm and success in music to
exceptional teachers Denise Heckel and Dennis Powell. She would
like to thank her parents for all their love and support.

Juliana Maslen is a Senior at Binghamton University. She is graduating with a degree in Music and Psychology. She studies piano with
Chai-Kyou Mallinson and is a member of the University Chorus.
After graduating she will be doing research and working as a
teacher's aid for children with autism. Juliana plans on getting her
Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.

Matt Cosnett is a Senior majoring in Music at Binghamton
University. He has studied percussion for twelve years and is currently studying under Dan Fabricius. Matt is from Vestal, New York.

Matthew Green is a Senior percussionist finishing up his B.A. in
Music. After undergraduate studies, Matt will be pursuing a Masters
degree in Music Education.

Remington A. Gregg is a Junior majoring in Philosophy, Politics,
and Law. He is director of Classical Music at the campus radio station, WHRW, and a member of the University Chorus. He presently
studies piano under Jody Schum. Remington is an assistant to the
Organist-in-Residence at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in his hometown of Staten Island, New York, and Assistant Organist at Calvary

—NOTES —
Jesus and the Traders - Zoltan Kodaly
The story of Jesus entering Jerusalem, finding the money changers in the temple and driving them out, is strongly portrayed in this setting
of verses from St. John, St. Mark, and St. Luke, with English words adapted from the Hungarian by Edward Dent. The music is written in
motet and homophonic style with skillful use of modal harmonies which underline the unfolding drama.
Wolfgang A. Mozart (1756-1791)
The international concert tours of Mozart as a young prodigy earned him the reputation of genius early in life. He was familiar with all the
masters and their styles through his wealth of musical contacts and acquaintances in every important city of Europe. His father provided him
with a thorough musical foundation, and by age twenty-one he possessed perhaps the most unique and valuable training that any young musician had ever received.
Mozart lived only thirty-five years, but his music reached a perfection which defies comparison. His melodies are perennially fresh, and his
works display an uncanny feeling for form. He was astoundingly productive. At age eight his first compositions were published, and early symphonies followed soon after. His first oratorio was composed at age eleven, and he conducted his own Solemn Mass at age twelve, the same year
that produced his first opera. His compositions include: 15 masses (plus numerous other church works), 21 operas and dramatic works, over
100 vocal compositions, over 40 symphonies (plus 74 other orchestral works), 52 concertos, 97 chamber works, more than 50 compositions for
piano, and 17 sonatas for organ.
The Requiem Mass (K. 626)
Much has been written about the sinister and romantic story surrounding the commissioning of the Requiem, Mozart ’s final work. The
anonymous stranger who approached Mozart was in actuality a steward of Count Franz von Walsegg, who wished to have the work composed
in memory of his wife. Mozart worked feverishly on the score despite a progressive illness, and the music shows traces of the agony of his spirit
as he composed, undoubtedly believing that he was writing his own requiem.
Prophetically, the Requiem was left unfinished, and his wife Constanze engaged his favorite student Siissmayer to complete the work.
Stissmayer used the voice parts, notes of accompaniment, and rough sketches left by Mozart for the incompleted sections, and followed
Mozart ’s style throughout. To provide cyclic unity he ended the work by repeating most of the opening movement, and reset the Kyrie fugue
to the text of cum sanctis. The genius of the Requiem lies in its perfect proportions, the disposition of both intricate and simple rhythms, and
of varying textures and instrumental colorings. A solo quartet is featured in contrasting ensemble passages against the full choir, but there are
no traditional arias. The Mozart Requiem is universally regarded as one of the undisputed pinnacles of devotional music.

—SOLOISTS —
Lynne Engstrom has been heard in leading soprano roles with the Tri-Cities Opera, most recently as Musetta in the 1976 production of La
Boheme. In addition to postgraduate work at Hofstra and the State University colleges at Fredonia and Potsdam, Miss Engstrom studied voice
for two summers at the Chautaugua School of Music, winning the Chautauqua Symphony Award and appearing as soprano soloist with that orchestra in August of 1976. Miss Engstrom continues her study with Tri-Cities Opera, is organist and choir director at the First Presbyterian
Church in Owego, and teaches music part-time in the Union-Endicott School system.
Janet Parker, most recently heard in the role of Suzuki in Madama Butterfly with Tri-Cities Opera, appeared in the 1975-76 productions of
Die Fledermaus, Il Trovatore, and The Magic Flute. She has a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master of Music in Applied-Voice from Ithaca
College. A student of both piano and oboe, she currently studies with Tri-Cities Opera, teaches part-time in the Maine-Endwell school system,
and is alto soloist at Tabernacle Methodist Church.
Gerald Grahame is a graduate of State University College at Fredonia and has performed with the Fredonia Opera Theater, the Greater Utica
Opera Guild, and the Upstate Lyric Theater. In addition to his many appearances with Tri-Cities Opera, Mr. Grahame has been heard as tenor
soloist in Mendelsshon’s Elijah, the Mozart Requiem, and Gounod’s St. Cecilia Mass. During the 1977 spring season Mr. Grahame will be soloist
with the Corning Symphony in Handel’s Judas Maccabeus.
Richard Jaynes trained in both voice and dance at Ithaca College and for six years danced professionally in Montreal. He made his debut
with Tri-Cities Opera in 1973 and has since sung several roles annually as well as contributing to the regular training program by giving classes
in body movement. Mr. Jaynes has sung with the Syracuse Oratorio Society and has been heard as soloist in Handel’s Messiah and Mendelssohn’s Elijah.

Chick Corea’s Children’s Songs No. 9, 2 and I 4 (1973 and 1979) were

originally written for piano, violin and cello. Tonight. we are
performing only three of twenty short tunes in this collection. Each song

is relatively short, containing just a simple theme with little to no
development. In the preface of the annot ated version, Corea states that

he aimed to “convey simplicity as beauty. as represented in the Spirit of a

child.“

Threads (2006). written for So Percussion Ensemble by Princeton
composition professor Paul Lansky, is a halfhour long cantata for

percussion quartet in ten short movements. There are three threads
interwoven throughout the piece; arias and preludes that focus on the

metallic pitched sounds of the vibraphones, glockenspiel and metallic
pipes; choruses in which drumming predominates; and recitatives made
largely from John Cagelike noise instruments, bottles, flowerpots,
crotales, etc. The aims of the different threads are to highlight the wide
range of qualities that percussion instruments are capable of, from lyrical
and tender to forceful and aggressive, and weave them into one

continuous texture, Tonight we w ill perform tw o of the ten movements

the first metallic thread and a drumming chorus from the middle of the
cantata.
Broken Silence, by Mark Glentworth, is one of three movements from
Vibraphone Suite No. 1 the others being limo and Sunbell. Each
movement has been written in such a way that it can be performed as a
solo, or as forming a part of the suite. Although Broken Silence was the
first movement to be composed for the suite, the performer may change
the order of the movements when performing the whole suite. Mark
Glentworth is a composer living and working in London(UK), mostly
known for his solo tuned percussion pieces and his work with
Actor/Director Steven Berkoff.

The Shape of Things to Come is the penultimate track on Nick
lvan Trevino is a musician who wears many hats. He’s a rock drummer at
heart, and brings that spirit into other avenues of his life, including
classical percussion, composing and teaching. Trevino has drummed.
recorded and composed extensively with Break of Reality. a national
touring cello rock band. Bloom. scored for four marimbas, weaves
between minimalism and postrock, reflecting the composer’s interest in
bands like Radiohead and Explosions in the Sky. Much like minimalism.
postrock compositions feature motivic ideas that develop organically
over time. Rather than utilizing the versechorus form of standard rock
music, postrockers tend to create an atmosphere of textures, utilizing
thick orchestrations and a wide range of dynamic. With Bloom. the

to the release of this album, Nick Zammuto was a member of a band

called The Books. Zammuto is his first release after ending The Books
project in early 2012. The arrangement you will hear tonight was put

together by all the current members of the percussion ensemble. Each

Society Composition Contest. Trevino is currently on faculty at the
Hochstein School of Music & Dance in Rochester. NY, where he teaches
percussion, composition, and chamber music. He is also on faculty at the
Eastman School of Music. where he teaches a course in music business.

October Night was written in the fall of 1986 and was Michael Burritt‘s
first serious attempt at composition. The piece is dedicated to famous

marimbist Gordon Stout, a former teacher and good friend of Burritt.
The work was inspired by the Dylan Thomas poem. Do Not Go Gentle
Into That Good Night. The poem conveys two very powerful and very
different moods: one of sorrow and deep remorse and the other of
aggression and anger. Thus a piece in two movements evolved depicting
these contrasting emotions. The first movement is a chorale painting the
sadness expressed in the poem of Thomas’ father’s impending death. It is
written in a romantic style and moves between the keys of C and Bflat
major. Movement Two is an energetic allegro depicting the intensity of
the poet’s emotions as he begs his father to fight against death. It
develops motivically through the use of perfect 5ths and major 6ths
separated by minor 2nds and augmented 4ths. it is in sonata form and
concludes the work with the coda from the first movement.
