operas and in this larger m ultimovement suite. The part writing

accompanist to the great virtuoso Heinrich Baermann, with wh

throughout Europe in the period 181216. This F minor concert

written in the new ‘Romantic’ style, with extremes of range, d

used to heighten the tragic emotional theme of the work.

Dan Zaccharini, Brenna Daugherty and Christa Heschke

Jacques Bouffil created the first sets of original clarinet trios for
use of
players in early 19"®century Paris. Each of the eight trios has three
movements,
highly virtuosic writing for all three parts, and a decidedly clas

reminiscent of Mozart and Haydn.

Gregg Ackerman & Margaret Reitz

Milhaud contributed several important solo works for clarinet
which draw
on French, Brazilian and American models, as all were places i
n which he resided
and taught during his long career. Scaramouche, (the name is fro

by Rafael Sa batini published in 1921) was originally composed
for saxophone, but
was immediately transcri bed by the compose r and published for

The pure tone of the clarinet lends itself wonderfully to the cou

Baroque music. Eugene Gay, former Professor of Clarinet at the

composers of clarinet chamber music in the latter 20” century. Thi

                  <text>Who is Max Reinhardt?
The celebrated Austrian theater director Max Reinhardt, recognized in America primarily for his elaborate productions of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Franz Werfel’s The Eternal Road, and Karl Vollmoeller’s The Miracle, was born in 1873 at Baden near Vienna, Austria and died in New York City in 1943. Reinhardt’s illustrious career takes on added significance because it coincides with a major shift in the evolution of the modern theater: the ascendancy of the director as the key figure in theatrical production. Reinhardt’s reputation in international theater history is secured by the leading role he played in this transformation, as well as by his innovative use of new theater technology and endless experimentation with theater spaces and locales, which together redefined traditional relationships between actor and audience toward a new participatory theater.

What is a prompt book?
The prompt book is a master copy of the production script and contains a wealth of instructions and information alongside the basic text of the play. As well as the actors’ lines, you will often see cues for music, movement, light, and many other aspects of stage business. It may also contain sketches of how a piece of staging is supposed to look, or which costume a character should wear in a scene.

Why are his important?
Reinhardt’s directorial prompt books reflect the ways in which he made plays by major playwrights, including Ibsen, Shakespeare and Wilder, his own. The prompt books contain notations denoting changes in the script, actor moves and technical cues, instructions on how sound, props and scenery were used, and stage drawings. They help us to reconstruct Reinhardt’s techniques and directions in productions.

Acknowledgements
Thank you to the Gladys Kriebel Delmas Foundation who generously provided the funding to make this extraordinary project possible. DUE ROSE FRESCHE
Two fresh roses, gathered the other day
in paradise, bloomed the firs t of May,
a fair gift from a lover old and wise
between two younger lovers equally divided
With words so sweet and a smile
that would enamor even a man wild–––
this gift through brigh t and amorous rays
caused the two lovers to change their faces.
"
“Such a pair of lovers the sun will never see,
he  said, laughing  while  he  sighed;
and holding both, he turned to look at one
and then the other.
Thus he divided the roses and the words,
so that even now my heart is glad and fears.
O happy eloquence, O joyful day!

CONTRAPPUNTO BESTIALE
Malcolm Ottaway, Bass, sings :
“Nulla fi d es gobbis
Similiter est zoppis,
Si squerzus bonus est,
Super annalia scribe.”
The other soloists are :
Constance Stirling, cuckoo
Rachel Gardner, owl
Susan Lawson, cat
Ann Baer, dog

MEI NS TRAURENS IST

DA L E BELLE CONTRADE

From the beautiful villages of the East,
clear and happy
rises Ciprigna (the dawn)
And I received in the arms of my divine
idol
That pleasure which does not exist humanly
When I heard twofold an ardent sigh
“Hope of my heart, sweet desire,
Are you leaving? Alas!
Do you leave me alone? Oh, God!
What will become of me here, dark and
dolorous?
Ah, my cruel love!
Well I court your sweetness

Yet I doubt your caresses are well intended
Since it still gives you pleasure
That my extreme joy terminates in tears.”
I was unable to say more, so closely were
we joined ,
Repeating the embraces in so many knots
That the ivy and the acanthus were never

more entwined.

\

My sadness ,
the cause of my brokenness,
which I can tell no–one but you,
my radiant sun,
is that I bear pain because of you.
I would rather –– believe me ––
accept death
than part from you like this.

DIE BRUNNLIN
From those flowing fountains
one  should  drink;
wink at your dear companion,
if you have one.
Yes, a wink with your eyes
and a kick with your foot ––
Tough luck if you have to avoid your companion!

GOD’S WORLD (by EDNA ST. VINCENT MILLAY)

0 world, I cannot hold thee close enough!
Thy winds, thy wide grey skies!
Thy mists that roll and rise!
Thy woods, this autumn day, that ache and sag
And all but cry with colour! Th a t g a un t c ra g
To crush! To lift the lean of that black bluff!
World, World, I cannot get thee close enough!
Long have I known a glory in it all,
But never knew I this :
Here such a passion i s
As stretcheth me apart,––– Lord , I do fear
Thou ’st  made  the  world too  beautiful  this  year ;
My soul is all but out of me,––– let fall
No burning leaf ; prithee, let no bird call.
HERZLICH L I E B HAB’ I C H DICH, 0 HERR

Versus I
With  all  my  heart  I love  Thee, Lord ;
I pray Thee ne ’er to forsake me
With Thy precious aid and grace.
Worldly pleasures I abandon,
Ask naught on earth nor in heaven,
But Thine own secure Presence.
And were my heart itself to break,
In Thee could I fi n d solace,
Thou art goal of all my longing,
By Thine own blood am I redeemed.
Lord Jesus Christ, my God and Lord ,
Save me from all tribulation!

VERSUS
These are, Lord, received as gift from Thee.
Body and Soul, and all I own
In this poor life on earth,
To be used to sing Thy praises,
To  help  and  serve  my  neighbor ;
So give me Grace to do this.
Protect me, Lord , from false doctrine,
From Satanic death and lies shield me,
Preserve me in all suffering ,
Let me bear the Cross in patience.
Lord Jesus Christ, my Lord and God,
Comfort my soul in deathly need!

Versus ITT
Lord , let at last Thine angels come,
To  Abraham ’s  bosom  bear  me  home;
My body in its resting place,
So soft, and free of suffering ,
Let sleep, till the Day of Judgement–––
And then, from death awaken me,
To behold Thee with mine own eyes,
In fullest joy, 0 Son of God ,
My Saviour and my fount of Grace.
Lord Jesus Christ, give ear to me,
I shall praise Thee eternally.
Amen.

Meine Freundin, Du bist schon (sung in German)
I. Duet for Soprano and Baritone
Groom : My beloved, you are beautiful. But turn
your eyes away from me, for they arouse my passions!
Bride: 0, if I could only meet you, and kiss you,
far away from here, so that no one could scorn me!
Come friend, let us go to your garden!
Groom: I hasten, my sister, lovely bride, to my
garden.
IT. Soprano Aria in the form of a Ciacona
My friend is mine, and I am his. I belong to him
who awaits me among the roses; for he is faithful
to me. His left arm will lie beneath me, holding
my head, while his right hand caresses me ; he
v
. delights me with,
flowers, and pleases me with apples.
/
fy” f riend is mine, and I am his.
III. Little Melodrama
Two acquaintances passing by : Where has your friend
gone, O most beautiful of women, whereto, whereto?
Bride : My friend has gone to his garden to savor
herbs and pick roses.
Acquaintances: Then let us help you fi n d him!
The search : orchestral
Groom : I have been gathering myrrh and other spices,
have eaten from my honey, and have enjoyed both wine
and milk.
IV. Celebration
Soloists and Chorus : Eat, my beloved, and drink,
my friends! For it is right and good to eat and
drink, and to be of good cheer ; for these are gifts
of God. And to get drunk – that too is a gift of ‘
God ’s.
Concluding chorale: Thanks to God – this we sing.
Lord God, Father, for this we thank you, that you have
given us richly to eat, and have demonstrated your
love and loyalty to us. Let us henceforth flourish,
give health and peace to our bodies. All who desire
this: say Amen!

Psalm 116 (sung in German)
I love the Lord, because he hath heard my
voice and my supplication.
Because he hath inclined his ear unto me,
therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.
The sorrows of death compassed me, and the
pains of sheol got hold of me; I found trouble
and sorrow.
Then I called upon the name of the Lord : 0
Lord, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.
Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yea,
our God is merciful.
The Lord preserveth the simple; I was brought
low, and he helped me.
Return unto thy rest, 0 my soul ; for the Lord
hath dealt bountifully with thee.
For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine
eyes from tears, and my feet from failing.
I will walk before the Lord in the land of the
living.
I believed, therefore have I spoken. I was
greatly  afflicted ;
I said in my haste, All men are liars.
What shall I render unto the Lord for all his
benefits toward me?
I will take the cup of salvation and call upon
the name of the Lord.
I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the
presence of all his people.
Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death
of his saints.
0 Lord, truly I am thy servant ; I am thy servant
and the son of thy handmaid ; thou hast loosed my bonds
I will o ff er to thee the sacrifice of
thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord.
I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the
presence of all his people.
In the courts of the Lord ’s house, in the midst
of thee, 0 Jerusalem. Praise ye the Lord.

:
I dreamed of a tree in a garden– which was a
church (or grave?)–yard– of a golden pitcher ,
filled with the tree ’s blossoms, which fell

GOD’S WORLD
THOMAS COLVILLE
(poem by Edna St.Vincent Millay)
0 World , I cannot hold thee close enough!
Thy winds, thy wide grey skies!
Thy mists, that roll and rise!
Thy woods, this autumn day, that ache and sag
and all but cry with colour!
To 1ift the lean of that black bluff!
0 World , I cannot get thee close enough!
Long have I known a glory in it all,
but  never knew  I  this ;
Here such a passion is as stretcheth me apart,
Lord, I do fear, thou ’st made the world
too  beautiful  this  year ;
My soul is all but out of me,
let fall no burning leaf ; prithee,
let  no  bird  call.
