Verse I (chorale)
Jesu meine Freudc, meines Herzens Weide, Jesu meine Zier,
Nichts sonst Liebers wcrdcn.
Jesus my joy, my heart ’s delight, Jesus my ornament,
Oh how long, how long is my heart afraid and yearning for T hee!
God’s lamb, my bridegroom, except for you nothing else on earth
Shall be dearer.

Chorus: Romans VIII. 1
There is now nothing condenmable in those who are part of Christ,
who do not live according to the flesh, but according to the spirit.

Verse II (chorale)
.
O b cs itzt gleich kracht und blitzt, ob gleich Siind und Holle schrekken:
Jesus will mich dekken.
Under your protection l am free be f ore ibe storms of all enemies.
Let Satan thunder, let the enemy be angry, Jesus stands by wie.
W hether it is thundering and lightening, whether sin and H ell threaten,
J esus will protect me,

Trio: Romans VIII, 2
For the law of the spirit, wirich has the power to give life in Jesus Christ
has made mc free from the law of sin and death,

Despite the old dragon, despite the open jaws of death, despite also , cer,
Rage, world, and shake, i stand l er e and sing in complete tranquility,
God‘s might kceps me protected; earth and abyss must become silent,
N a matter how they grumble.

ruguo chorus: Romans VI I. 9
Ihr aber seid nich fieischlich, sondern geistiich,
so anders Gottes Geist in euch wohnet, wer
But you are not mortal, but spivivual,
however differently God lives within y al ,
but he who docs wot have Christ ’s spirit, he is not thine.

Verse IV (chorale)
Away with all treasures! you ave my delight, Jesus my joy!
Away, you vain glories, I do not want to hear of you, remain unknown to me
Misery, need, trouble, humiliation, and deatly shall not separate wie
From Christ, although 1 must suffer much.

Trio: Romans VIII 10
um der Siinde willen;
But if Christ is in you, then the body is indeed dead,
on account of the mortal sin;
but the spirit is life for the sake of (His) justice,

Verse V (Quartet – chorale)
Good night, oh creature which the world bas chosen, I am not pleased with you.
G ood night, you sins, stay far behind we, come no longer into the light!
Good night, you pride and splendor, to you life of wice, farcwell forever,

Chorus: Romans VIIL 2
cure sterblichen Leiber lebengdig machen
:

]
If now the spirit o f him who has raised fesus frome the dead live in you
T hen clso will the sa ne one whe has raised Christ front the dead

Already the sun sparkles
more clearly from the Ganges,
and wipes away every tear
from the weeping dawn,
He adorns every stem
with a golden ray,
and paints the stars of the sky
in the field.
Oh love, bring contentment

Bellini

Oh love, bring contentment
to my beloved ’s heart
and I shall forgive you
if my own heart is heavy.
I fear her sufferings
more than my own,
because I live more in her
than in myself.

Sad likeness of my Phyllis

Bellini

Sad likeness of my Phyllis ,
Why do you sit by me so gloomily?
What more do you desire?
I have been shedding
bitter tears over your ashes.
Do you fear that, my sacred vows forgotten,
another fl ame could set me on fi re?
Ghost of Phyllis, rest in peace,
the old passion of love is inextinguishable ;
ghost of Phyllis.
Melancholy, sweet nymph
Melancholy, sweet nymph,
I consecrate my life to you ;
he who despises your pleasures
is not born of true pleasure.
I asked the gods for fountains and hills ;
they heard me at last, I shall live contented
nor shall I ever wish to pass
beyond that spring or that hill,
nor ever desire to go further,
nor ever go further, no, no, never.

Restless love

Josef von Spaun

The youth and death
Youth:

The sun ’s setting, ah, could I but go with it,
Escape with its last ray!
Ah, avoid these unnamed torments
And move out into fairer worlds!
Oh, come, death, loosen these bonds,
I smile at you, skeleton,
Lightly take me to dreamt–of lands!
0, come, do touch me, now, o, come!

Death:

Rest is cool and gentle in my arms,
You call –– I ’ll take pity on your plight.

Group from Tartarus

Friedrich von Schiller

Hark –– ressembling the murmur of the lashing seas,
And as the river sobbing carves its way through pale and bare rock,
So rises from dark depths an empty, heasy
Tortured groan.
Pain distorts
Their features –– their jaws

A cursing chasm of despair.

They ’re asking in-urgent whispers,
Is fulfilment not yet near?
O’er their heads, eternal circles ––
And the scythe of Saturn breaks.

Why are you so lonely in the sky,
0, fairest star? –– And so mild ;
Why does the array resplendent
Of brother–stars keep away from you?
“I am true love,s obedient star,
They keep from love away.”

Rather through suffering
would I win through,
Than be forced to bear
The pleasures of life!
All that longing
From heart to heart,

Oh, how unique
Is this agony!
How can I fl ee ,
Shall I to the forests?
All is in vain!
Crown of life,
Bliss without peace,
Love this is you!

Chanson gaillarder

La maitresse volage
My mistress is fickle, my rival is happy.

Hollow are their eyes –– straining to peer
With anguished looks toward Cocytus ’ bridge.
Following tearfully the river ’s mournful course.

Star of eve

Through spray from cliffs,
Through fog and mist,
Keep on, keep on!
No rest, no peace!

\

"

Chanson a boire
The kings of Egypt and Syria had their bodies embalmed
so as to enjoy a life after death. Come, let us drink, drink
“and embalm ourselves before death. How sweet is this balm!

Madrigal
You are beautiful as an angel, sweet as a little lamb.

Johann Mayrhafdr

Invocation aux parques
E swear to love you as long as I live. Fates, who hold
the thread of life in your hands, I pray you to prolong mine

as long as you can.
Couplets bachiques
When I see a bottle without wine I am sad ; if it is full
I am happy. When I am with my wife I am sober –– if the pretty
girls take me on I am jolly.
L ’offrande
A maiden offered a candle to the god of love in order to
gain a lover.

Smiling at the request, the god said,“Beauty,

while waiting, always yourself be the offering.”

La belle jeunesse
One needs to love but not always to marry. Make love
to many, but if you are wise you ’ll not marry.

Sérénade
With so beautiful a hand and such charms, how well
you use Cupid ’s weapon.

BIOGRAPHICAL BACKGROUND

DAVID CLATWORTHY is enjoying his fifteenth consecutive year as a leading
baritone with the N.Y.C.Opera Company. As a student at the University of
Arizona, he was encouraged by the legandary Metropolitan baritone Richard
Bonelli to study seriously for an operatic career. After completing
undergraduate college studies and two years service as an officer in the
U.S.Army,Mr. Clatworthy enrolled at the Juilliard School of Music and
Columbia University where he received his Master of Arts degree. His
appearances at Lincoln Center have featured him in a variety of roles from
the Count in Mozart ’s The Marriage of Figaro to such contemporary operas
as Janacek ’s The Makropolos A ff air and Gianstera ’s Don Rodrigo. In addition
to his performances with opera companies in San Francisco, Chicago, Houston,
Fort Worth, and Central City, the Michigan born singer has appeared as soloist
with the Boston, Chicago, Detroit, and Dallas Symphonies, as well as the
Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. He has made recordings
for RCA Victor, Mercury, and Vanguard record companies, and has appeared
periodically on CBS, NBC, and ABC television networks. Next month Mr.
Clatworthy will appear with the Ft. worth Opera Company, and in May he will
be heard at Spoleto West, Charleston, South Carolina, in a new production of
The Consul, staged by its composer Gian–Carlo Menotti, and participate in
its recording on Columbia records.
DIANE RICHARDSON attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music as a piano
scholarship student and received her Bachelors of Music degree. To pursue
an early interest in the art of accompanying, she traveled to New York to
work with Sergius Kagen, Robert Starer, and Adele Marcus at the Juilliard
School of Music. Later she attended Columbia University and received a
Master of Arts degree. Miss Richardson has toured throughout the United
States and Europe in the past fi v e years. Being equally at home in operatic
and lieder repertoire, she has collaborated in recitals and privately coached
many leading artists from the Metropolitan Opera Company, the N.Y.C.Opera,
Covent Garden, and Sadlers Wells Opera Company. She has been on the faculty
of the Oberlin Conservatory and Juilliard School, and is presently an assistant
conductor and coach with the New York City Opera Company.

—NOTES —
Jesus and the Traders - Zoltan Kodaly
The story of Jesus entering Jerusalem, finding the money changers in the temple and driving them out, is strongly portrayed in this setting
of verses from St. John, St. Mark, and St. Luke, with English words adapted from the Hungarian by Edward Dent. The music is written in
motet and homophonic style with skillful use of modal harmonies which underline the unfolding drama.
Wolfgang A. Mozart (1756-1791)
The international concert tours of Mozart as a young prodigy earned him the reputation of genius early in life. He was familiar with all the
masters and their styles through his wealth of musical contacts and acquaintances in every important city of Europe. His father provided him
with a thorough musical foundation, and by age twenty-one he possessed perhaps the most unique and valuable training that any young musician had ever received.
Mozart lived only thirty-five years, but his music reached a perfection which defies comparison. His melodies are perennially fresh, and his
works display an uncanny feeling for form. He was astoundingly productive. At age eight his first compositions were published, and early symphonies followed soon after. His first oratorio was composed at age eleven, and he conducted his own Solemn Mass at age twelve, the same year
that produced his first opera. His compositions include: 15 masses (plus numerous other church works), 21 operas and dramatic works, over
100 vocal compositions, over 40 symphonies (plus 74 other orchestral works), 52 concertos, 97 chamber works, more than 50 compositions for
piano, and 17 sonatas for organ.
The Requiem Mass (K. 626)
Much has been written about the sinister and romantic story surrounding the commissioning of the Requiem, Mozart ’s final work. The
anonymous stranger who approached Mozart was in actuality a steward of Count Franz von Walsegg, who wished to have the work composed
in memory of his wife. Mozart worked feverishly on the score despite a progressive illness, and the music shows traces of the agony of his spirit
as he composed, undoubtedly believing that he was writing his own requiem.
Prophetically, the Requiem was left unfinished, and his wife Constanze engaged his favorite student Siissmayer to complete the work.
Stissmayer used the voice parts, notes of accompaniment, and rough sketches left by Mozart for the incompleted sections, and followed
Mozart ’s style throughout. To provide cyclic unity he ended the work by repeating most of the opening movement, and reset the Kyrie fugue
to the text of cum sanctis. The genius of the Requiem lies in its perfect proportions, the disposition of both intricate and simple rhythms, and
of varying textures and instrumental colorings. A solo quartet is featured in contrasting ensemble passages against the full choir, but there are
no traditional arias. The Mozart Requiem is universally regarded as one of the undisputed pinnacles of devotional music.

—SOLOISTS —
Lynne Engstrom has been heard in leading soprano roles with the Tri-Cities Opera, most recently as Musetta in the 1976 production of La
Boheme. In addition to postgraduate work at Hofstra and the State University colleges at Fredonia and Potsdam, Miss Engstrom studied voice
for two summers at the Chautaugua School of Music, winning the Chautauqua Symphony Award and appearing as soprano soloist with that orchestra in August of 1976. Miss Engstrom continues her study with Tri-Cities Opera, is organist and choir director at the First Presbyterian
Church in Owego, and teaches music part-time in the Union-Endicott School system.
Janet Parker, most recently heard in the role of Suzuki in Madama Butterfly with Tri-Cities Opera, appeared in the 1975-76 productions of
Die Fledermaus, Il Trovatore, and The Magic Flute. She has a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master of Music in Applied-Voice from Ithaca
College. A student of both piano and oboe, she currently studies with Tri-Cities Opera, teaches part-time in the Maine-Endwell school system,
and is alto soloist at Tabernacle Methodist Church.
Gerald Grahame is a graduate of State University College at Fredonia and has performed with the Fredonia Opera Theater, the Greater Utica
Opera Guild, and the Upstate Lyric Theater. In addition to his many appearances with Tri-Cities Opera, Mr. Grahame has been heard as tenor
soloist in Mendelsshon’s Elijah, the Mozart Requiem, and Gounod’s St. Cecilia Mass. During the 1977 spring season Mr. Grahame will be soloist
with the Corning Symphony in Handel’s Judas Maccabeus.
Richard Jaynes trained in both voice and dance at Ithaca College and for six years danced professionally in Montreal. He made his debut
with Tri-Cities Opera in 1973 and has since sung several roles annually as well as contributing to the regular training program by giving classes
in body movement. Mr. Jaynes has sung with the Syracuse Oratorio Society and has been heard as soloist in Handel’s Messiah and Mendelssohn’s Elijah.
