A Few Tips on Concert Etiquette

For those in  the audience  who  are new to  classical  concerts,  here are fe w

suggestions on what to do and what not to do. Please turn off all cell phones and
pagers.  Please  do  not talk  to  your  neighbor  (even  softly),  move  around
excessively  in  your chair, rustle  papers  or  cellophane.  If you  need  a throat
lozenge, open it during applause only. And one more tip – it’s distressing to the
performer if you applaud between movements  wait  until the end o f the piece.
Follow these few simple rules and you’ll make the concert a joy for everyone!

If you would like to receive mailings on future events in the music
department, please call us at 6077772592.

Tr uly, then, I have no complaint,
For though she be fair and fairer,
There is none so fair as she
In my heart.

Introduction and Passacaglia............................................ Max Reger
(18731916)

[11. Upon a High Place

I stood upon a high place,
And saw, below, many devils
Running, leaping,
And carousing in sin.
One looked up, grinning,
And said: “Comrade! Brother!”

ABOUT THE PERFO RMER

Symphonie III, op. 28

. Louis Vierne
(18701937)

Prélude, Fugue et Variation

. César Franck
(18221890)

Allegro Maestoso

Three Pieces for Organ (2000)....
(Based on poetry of Stephen Crane)
I.  Black Riders

Black riders came from the sea.
There was clang and clang of spear and shield,
And clash and clash of hoof and heel,
Wild shouts and the wave of hair
In the rush upon the wind:
Thus the ride Sin.

II.  Here and There
I looked here;
I looked there:
Nowhere could I see my love.
And—this time—
She was in my heart.

TRANSLATIONS
Fischerweise (Fisherman’s Song)
The fisherman no sorrow, no pain, no  grief assails;
At break of day he casts off his boat with easy mind.
Peace still lies all around in wood and field and stream,
But he, with his singing, awakes the golden sun.

He sings, while he is working, from full and lively breast,
His labors give him vigor, his vigor  zest for life.
And soon in motley fashion, the depths will teem and sound,
And, splashing, break the heavens that on the waters rest.
But whoever wants to set nets, needs eyes both good and clear,
Must be cheerful as the waves, and free as is the tide.
There on the bridge is fishing the shepherdess.
Sly thing, give up your trickery, this fish you’ll not take in.

G loria in excelsis Deo

Zigeunerleben (Gypsy Life)
I n  the shady forest, between the beechtrees,
there’s a stirring and bustling, and whispers are heard.
The flickering light of the fire dances
around colorful figures, leaves, and rocks.
This is where the gypsies meet,
with eyes flashing and hair flowing,
some nursed at the Nile’s sacred waters,
some burned by Spain’s southern sun.

‘Round the fire, piled with green branches,
are the men, untamed and wild,
while the women crouch, preparing th e meal,
filling the old cups with wine.
Then songs and legends are shared around,
of Spanish gardens blooming and bright,
and magical legends of times of peril and danger
are passed on to all by the elders.

Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace
to men of good will.
We praise you, we bless you, we worship you, we glorify you.

A darkeyed maiden begins to dance.
Bright as a torch burns her passionate glance.
To the strumming of guitars and the ringing of cymbals,
wild and wilder they dance and sing.

Ubi caritas
Where there is charity and love, God is there.
The love of Christ has gathered us together.
Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Let us revere and love the living God.
And from a sincere heart let us love one another.

Then weary, they lie down and rest.
Beneath the beechtrees they slumber,
And they who were banned from their homeland
See it now only in dreams.
But when in the east the morning awakes
so vanish the images of the night.
The shuffling of hooves at the breaking of dawn;

they’ve vanished  who knows where they’ve gone?

My loving days,

To be able thus, as long as

(Question and  Answer)
As long as I will ask you, “Do you love

If I ask with glances, “Do you love me,

And if a sigh asks you,  “Do yo u love

Selige N acht
(Blissful Night)
In the arms of love we fell blissfully
asleep.
The summer wind eavesdropped at the
open window

and carried the peace of our breathing
into
the brightly moonlit night.
And from the garden a scent of roses
cautiously found its way to our bed of
love
and gave us wonderful dreams,
dreams of ecstasy, so full of desire.

Otto Erich Hartleben

Nachtgebet
(Night P rayer)
Oh, if you saw me praying now
to your deep, holy eyes
that plead to me as if asking for love, i
you would close your deep eyes
so I would not lose myself in them as
in love.
Oh, if you saw me praying
to your soul, cheerful like a child,
that childlike soul would be silent
so that it would not drown in my love.
Stindch en
(Serenade)

Good night, beloved life.
I call into your little window
and then I will go on my way.
Ah! Think of me in your dreams!
Because you surely know that,

devoted  to you, my heart must

quiver in torment.
Good night, beloved life.
Ah! Think of me in your dreams!
Paul Heyse

Chi sa, chi sa, qual sia, K.582
(Who knows, who knows
what it may be)
Who knows, who knows what
it may be that torments my beloved?
Is it anger, jealousy,
fear, suspicion or love?

O gods, ye who know

the purity of my affection,

dispel this bitter doubt
from m y  heart.

Si mes vers avai ent des ailes
(If my verses ha d wings)
My verses would flee, sweet and frail,
To your garden so beautiful,
If my verses had wings
Like the bird!
They would fly, glittering,
To your cheery fireside,
If my verses had wings
Like the wind!
To you, pure and faithful,
They would hasten, night and day,
If my verses had wings,
Like love!
Victor Hugo

A Ch loris
(To Chloris)
If it be true, Chloris, that you
do love me,

And I have heard, you love me well,
Then kings themselves I do believe
Could hardly match my wealth.
Death would be most inopportune
To come and alter my good fortune
Just to please the heaven!

Say what you will about ambrosia—
It can hardly compare to the magic
Of your eyes bestowing their gaze on
me.

Théophile de Viau

L ’Enamourée
(The Beloved)
They say, my dove
That you dream, though still dead,
Beneath the stone of the tomb :
Yet for this soul who adores you,

You awaken, enlivened,
Oh, my pensive beloved!

Through nights whitened by stars,
In the murmuring breeze,
I caress your long veils,

Your long flowing tresses,

And your halfclosed wings

That flutter ab ove t he roses.

Oh, sweet delight, I breathe in
Your divine blond locks :
Your pure voice  that lyre
Follows the wave upon the currents,
And softly glides over them,
Glides over them softly

Like a swan that weeps!
Théophile de Banville

Paysage
(A D istant Sho re)
On a shore resounding with the roar of

the sea,
There is a little hidden corner of

Brittany,
Where I would love so much to take
you one day,
When the autumn leaves are falling,
my darling!

You would see oaktrees encircling a
fountain,

A fe w scattercd beeches, and an old,

deserted mill,
And even a well in whose clear water
is reflected
The green of your siren’s eyes...
In the morning, out from under a
yellowed leaf,
The titmouse would come and sing for
us alone...
And the sea itself, at night and during
the day,
Would join each time in our loving
embraces,
From the depths of its bottomless soul!

2.  (Moderato)
In many hearts there is death inside
like a dark wasteland;
the heart is a place for sadness and pain only.
A delusion of hot love enters into the heart
and the heart pines with grief:
This means it loves.
The sweet feeling changes the dead heart
into a paradise;
and it sings the old legend (of love).

4.  (Poco sostenuto)
I know that in a sweet hope I can love you;
still more anviously we want the love to grow.
And yet, when I look into the delightful night of your eyes,
and learn how the heaven of love
from your eyes bestows power on me:
my eyes are filling with tears,
For brooding o’er our love,
I see a cruel fate looking at us in happiness.
7 . (Andante)

In that sweet power of y our eyes

How gladly I would die for thee;
If laughter of your beautiful lips
did not invite me to live.
I would choose immediately
that sweet death, with no fear;

I know your smiling lips
will awaken me to life again.

Antonin Dvorak
