1.

TOWARD THE UNKNOWN REGION

R. Vaughan Williams

Darest thou now O soul,
Walk out with me toward the unknown region,
Where neither ground is for the feet nor any path
to follow?
A special word of thanks to the chorus

No map there, nor guide,
Nor voice sounding, nor touch of human hand,
Nor face with blooming flesh, nor lips, nor eyes,
are in that land.

of treble soloists participating in this
evening's program.

I know it not O soul,
Nor dost thou, all is a blank before us,
All waits undreamed of in that region, that
inaccessible land.

Nor darkness, gravitation, sense, not any bounds
bounding us.

Then we burst forth, we float,
In time and space O soul, prepared for them,
Equal, equipt at last, (O joy! O fruit of all!)
them to fulfil O soul.

SYMPHONY OF PSALMS

Igor Stravinsky

Translation of the Text
Part I.

Verses 13 and 14 of Psalm No. 38

13.

Hear my prayer, O Lord, and my supplication.
Give ear to my tears. Be not silent:
for I am a stranger with Thee
and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.

14.

O forgive me, that I may be refreshed,
before I go hence, and be no more.

Part II.

Verses 2, 3 and 4 of Psalm No. 39

2.

With expectation I have waited for the Lord
And he was attentive to me.

3.

And he heard my prayers,
and brought me out of the pit of misery,
and the mire of dregs.
And He set my feet upon a rock,
and directed my steps.

4.

And He put a new canticle into my mouth,
and a song to our God. Many shall see and fear:
and they shall hope in the Lord.
Part III.

any conventional sense as with the English oratorio
tradition--which is to say, there is virtually no
connection at all. The driving spirit of the work is
Holst's own intensely personal form of mysticism.
Now, as the Holst centenary approaches and passes,
the Englishness of his music stands out in proud relief,
but it can no longer be regarded as a parochial phenomenon. Its specifically Holstian integrity and warmth
of heart reach out ever more persuasively to listeners
everywhere, who find themselves in the 1970's unprecedentedly responsive to the life-celebrating directness
of a mysticism that is earth-based but not earthbound.

Praise ye the Lord in His sanctuary;
praise Him in the firmament of His power.
Praise Him for His mighty acts:
praise Him according to the multitude of
His greatness.
Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet.
Praise Him with timbrel and choir:
praise Him with strings and organs.
Praise Him on high sounding ymbals:
praise Him on cymbals of joy.
Let every spirit praise the Lord. Alleluia.

THERE WILL BE A SHORT INTERMISSION

THE HYMN OF JESUS

------

Holst composed The Hymn of Jesus during the last
five months of 1917 and dedicated the work to his friend
and colleague Ralph Vaughan Williams. For his text he
drew on the Apocryphal Acts of St. John, which appealed
to him so strongly that he learned Greek in order to read
the original and make his own translation. In contrast to
the exultant vigor. of the Hymn itself he fashioned a
Tranquil Prelude, built on the plainsong hymns Vexilla
Regis and Pange Lingua and incorporating the Latin texts.
The Hymn of Jesus has little to do with "sacred music" in

PROGRAM  NOTES

MAGN IFICAT  I N  D ,  JOHANN  SEBASTIAN  BACH
The  fi rs t  Christmas  at  Leipzig  gives  a  good  idea of  the creative  fury  that
possessed  Johann Sebastian  Bach.  On  each  of  the  three  feast–days  he  not  only  offered
a new  cantata, but  also, in  the  vesper  service, his  new  Magnificat was  performed

Magnificat is  one  of  the  few  works  that  Bach  composed  on  a Latin  text, here
using  Mary ’s  hymn from  the  Vulgate which  ends  with  the  familiar  doxology,  ‘Gloria
Patri.‘  To  this  setting  Bach added  four  independent  pieces, based  partly  on  German,
partly  on  Latin  texts  he (Bach) found  in a  Christmas  cantata  by  Johann Kuhnau, his
predecessor  in Leipzig.  The  first, a four–part motet  based  on  the  Lutheran  Christmas
song,  ‘Vom  Himmel Hoch';  the second,  ‘Freut  Euch  und Jubiliert’ (Rejoice  and  be  glad)
set for  three–part women ’s  voices  and  tenors ;  the  third  employs  the liturgical  text

“Gloria in excelsis  Deo ’ and  is  set  for  five–part chorus ;  and  the  fourth  is  a  duet
for  Soprano  and  Bass soli,  ‘Virga Jesse  Floruit’ which speaks  of  the  coming  of  our
Lord  in  the  likeness  of man in vocal  lines  of  unusually  long  and  melismatic  character.
In  1730,  Bach  revised  this  version of  Magnificat and  changed  the  key  from
E  fl a t  to  B, a more  suitable  transposition for  trumpets.  He  also  added  flutes and
removed  the four  additional  pieces.  As  a result,  they  are  usually  omitted  from modern
performances.  However, because  they  are  particularly  imbued with  the  Christmas  spirit
and  bring  the  monumental  character  of the  main  work  into  full relief, we  take  pleasure
in  including  them  in  tonight’s  performance.

GLORTA,  FRANCIS  POULENC

Francis Poulenc was a  member  of  the renowned  French  group  ‘Les  Six’  who  are

Berenice  Bramson was  born  in  Omaha, Nebraska,
where  she  began serious study  of  the  piano with  Enid
Lindborg, a pupil of  Ernest Hutcheson.  She  came  east
to  continue her  piano  and  academic  studies  at  Hunter
College, New  York  University  and  Columbia.  The  young
planist’s  voice was soon  discovered  and  she  began her
vocal  studies with  Boris  Voronovsky.  She  also studied
and  coached  with  such  famous  musical  figures as  Pierre
Bernac, Estelle Liebling, Paul  Ulanowsky  and  Fausto
Cleva, acquiring  her  unparalleled  repertoire  of  lieder,
orchestra  works, operatic  roles  and  chamber  music  works
Of  her  New  York  recital  in  March  1973, Peter  Davis
wrote in  the  Times:  '"Very  rarely  does  an  unheralded
singer  appear  in  Carnegie  Recital Hall who  can stand

comparison with  international superstars.  On  the basis
of  her  concert  Sunday  night, Berenice  Bramson can
match  talents with any soprano recitalist  before  the
public  today.”
c

known for  their  violint reaction  to  the  aesthetic  ideals  of  the  pre–war  generation

of  composers.

Choral  music  always  had  a  great  attraction for  Poulenc  and  many  of  his
compositions  in  this  fi eld  are  of  a religious nature.  Gloria, written  in  1959, was
commissioned  by  the  Koussevitzky  Foundation and  fi rst  performed  under  Charles Munch
in January,  1961.
:
Whether writing  for  orchestra  or  voices, the  art  of  Francis  Poulenc  is  pre–
eminently  vocal.  He combines  in  his  Gloria  a sure instinct for  grace  and  elegance
with  a  profound  understanding  and  rendering of  the  more serious  undertones  of  his
text.

Program  Notes
The  Music  Makers,  set  to  Arthur  O’Shaughnessy’s

poem,  was  wr i t te n  i n  1912  and,  unlike  some  o f   i t s

earlier  predecessors   Dream  of  Gerontius  (1900),

Enigma  Variations  (1899),  The  Apostles  (1903),  and

the  Symphonies   uses  referential  themes  from  many  of
th es e  works.  The  at t ra c t i o n  f o r  Elgar was  th e  t e x –
tural quality  o f   dream  fantasy  and  the  p o ss i b i l i t i es

This  “Magnificat",  by  Serge  Rachmaninoff  (1873
1943)  is  the  eleventh  of  fifteen choral  selections
written  in  1916  for  the  “ALL  Night  Vigil,”  Opus  37.

exaltations in  th e  higher vo i c e s .   The  theme  o f   spir–

gaining  fulness  and  grandeur  and  gradually  growing

the  Lord
Daniel  Pinkham (b.  1923)  is  a contemporary  Amer–
iean  composer  now  on  the  faculty  of  the  New  England

Conservatory  o f  Music.  His  “Christmas  Cantata,”
wr i t t e n  i n  1957,  i s  a  good re p res e n tati o n  o f  modern

choral  composition.  The  work i s  i n  three movements,
opening  with an  invocation  t o  the shepards  t o  t e l l

t h e  s t o r y   o f   t h e  Na t ivi t y.   This  i s  done  wi th  sim
plicity  and  freshness,  and  in  programmatic  style.

The  second  movement describes  the  mystery  of  the

Virgin and  the Nativity,  and  leads  t o  an  ebullient
third movement,  where  the  f u l l  chorus  sings  “Gloria
i n  e x c el s i s  Deo,”  a motive repeated between  several
sections o f   praise and  adoration,  i n  which more  and
more  voices  are  heard.  The  work  culminates  drama
tically  in a  final Alleluia.

Bach  was  a great  borrower  not  only  from  such great

masters  as  Vivaldi and  Corelli but  from  his own  pro–

digious  output

From h i s  Mass  i n  B minor  composed  i n  1733,  Bach
drew  Cantata  191.  Dated  1740,  i t  i s  an  arrangement

work  i s  i n  three movements:  the  fi r s t  based on  the
Gloria,  No.  4  o f   the  Mass;  the  second on  th e   Domine

Deus,  No.  7 of  the  Mass;  and  the  closing  chorus  on  the
Cum  Sancto  S p i r i tu ,   No.  11  o f   the  Mass.

The  main  d i ff e re n ces   l i e  i n  Bach’s  textual changes
which  substitute  the  Doxology  i n  the  second and  third
movements.

PROGRAM
Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in Gmajor .
Allegro

I. S. Bach

(16851750)

Andante

Presto
Soloists:  Georgetta  Maiolo, Flute
Harry Lincoln, Flute
James Wallenberg, Violin
The  six  Brandenburg  Concertos  were  written  during  Bach’s  employment  in  the
court at Coethen, a period during which he composed much of his secular instrumental
music. They were dedicated on March 24, 1721, to Christian Ludwig, the Margrave of

the Prussian province of  Brandenburg.

The solo group  (concertino)  for the fourth concerto was originally scored for two
recorders  and  violin.  The three movements  are of  contrasting  character, the  first  in  a
dancelike triple meter, the second  an  Andante with many phrased couplets  giving the
effect of  chains of sighs, and the third is a fast fugal Presto which features florid passage
work for the solo violin.  Throughout the work the concertino interacts  with the back
ground group (ripieno) more in the sense of friendly rivalry (“concertare”) and sharing
of materials than the setting off  of a solo to an accompaniment of secondary interest.

Concerto for two pianos in dminor

Allegro ma non troppo

F. Poulenc

(18991963)

Larghetto

Allegro molto
Soloists:  Madeleine Brooks
Christine Lindsay
Poulenc  was commissioned to  write this concerto for a  performance by the  com
poser  and  Jacque  F ebrier  at  the  International  Festival  of  Contemporary  Music  at
Venice in 1932. As is characteristic of many of  Poulenc’s works the concerto is sophisti
cated and gay, yet uncomplicated. The buoyant first movement closes with effects which
reflect the Balinese music Poulenc heard at the Colonial Exposition  in 1931.  The slow
movement’s outer sections are reminiscent of  Mozart while the middle part of the move
ment is openly Romantic in style. The very free Finale is exuberant  and brilliant.  The
total work is a successful treatment of the twopiano concerto, a  genre explored by few
composers.

INTERMISSION

Symphony No. 94 in Gmajor ( “Surprise”) .

I. Haydn

(17321809)

Adagio cantabile; Vivace assai
Andante
Menuetto–Allegro molto
Allegro di molto

This is one of  the bestknown  of  the twelve  “London” symphonies  Haydn  wrote
during two sojourns in England, 17911795.  These last  symphonies by  Haydn are ma
ture works of  great imagination which  influenced composers through much of  the nine
teenth  century.  The opening  notes of  the slow introduction  to the first  movement  are
transformed, with slight  rhythmical change,  into the main theme  of  the  Allegro.  The
slow movement, a  theme with f our variations, is noted,  of  course, f or its tutti surprise

chord at one of  the cadences.  More droll are the  humorous contrasts  in the pompous
second  variation in a minor key.  The seemingly  straightforward  minuet  breaks  into  a
clever piece of  canonic writing in its second section. The last movement, jolly and bois
terous, hides a  humorous and fast moving reference to  the first  movement  which  is  a
challenge for the listener to catch.
