Notes  on  String  Quartet  No. 4

by
Ezra  Laderman

String  Quartet  No. 4,  commissioned  by  the  Lenox  String  Quartet, was
completed  in  August  of  1974.  The  Quartet  is  in  one  continuous  movement with
four  connected  sections.  The  fi rs t  section  is  a  series  of  ever–extending
soloistic  phrases  against which  subsidiary  material  underscores  the  qualities
found  in  each  solo.  These  solos  emerge  as  four  distinct  characters :  Violin
I, whose  dynamic  range  is  from  ppp  to  ff f ,  whose  gesture  is  romantic,  whose
tempi  is  andante/rubato, whose  sound  is  warm  and  expressive, whose  attitude
is  quixotic,  whose  harmonic  language  is  chromatic  and  whose  meter  is  5/4 and
its  derivatives;  Violin  II has  a  dynamic  range  that  is  either  piano  or  mezzo
forte  or forte,  its  gesture  is  nee–classic,  its  tempo  is  very  strict, its
sound  is  secco (dry),  its  attitude  is  cool  yet  satiric,  its  harmonic  language
is  astringent (dissonant within  a  tonal  compass),  its  meter  2/4 (6/8);  the
Viola ’s  dynamic  range  has  sudden  dramatic  shifts  and  levels  of  intensity, his
gesture  is  expressionistic,  the  tempo  has  violent  extremes,  the  sound  encom–
passes  a  totality  of  possibilities,  the  attitude  is  dramatic  and  destructive,
the  harmonic  language  is  aleatoric,  pointillistic  as  well  as  modal, and  the

meter  is  free;  the  Cello ’s  dynamic  range  is  well  defined for  each  of  its

sections,  its  gesture  is  nee–baroque,  its  tempo  is  fl owing  (never–ending),
its  sound  is  rich  and  expansive,  its  attitude  is  compassionate,  its  harmonic

language  is  triadic  fourths  and  fif ths and  its  meter  is  3/4 (9/8).

At  the  end  of  the  last  solo  taken  by  the  Cello,  the  Viola  suddenly  ¢
emerges, forming  a  transitional  passage  into  the  second  section  of  the  quartet.
The  second  section  is  a  series  of  four  duets  pitting  the  contrasting  elements
against  each  other;  the  fi rs t  duet  engages  the  two  Violins,  the  second  duet
the  Viola  and  Cello,  the  third  duet  the  Violin  I  and  the  Cello  and  the  last
duet  the  Violin  II  and  the  Viola.  It  is  during  the  last  duet  that  the  third
and  then  the  fourth  voice  joins..  The  third  section  begins  at  a  point (measure
199) when  the  four  voices  are  for  the  fi rs t  time  equal.  The  four  voices  at
fi rs t  go  their  separate  ways.  Perceptively  though,  they  begin  and  do  merge
(measure  223) forming  a  unified  oneness  that  lasts  for  one  glorious  moment
(an  infinity).   The  differing  lines  compress  until  the  fi nal  contour  of  a new
evolved  line  emerges (measure  275).  The  new  phrase  established, a series  of
propulsive  variants  explodes,  exhalting  in  the  moment,  culminating  and  ending

at  measure  384.

The  transfigura tion  of  the  material  over, only  the  underlining  figurations
from  Section  1  remain.  The  concluding  section  is  concerned  with  the  attempt
to  organize  these  subsidiary  gestures  into  recognizable  structures.  These
shapes  become  fewer  and  fewer  until  all  are  disintegrated,  gone.  The  coda
(measure  425) is  a  recall,  a  tear,  a  moment  suspended  in  time.

DUE  ROSE  FRESCHE
Two  fresh  roses,  gathered  the  other  day
in  paradise, bloomed  the  firs t of  May,
a  fair  gift  from  a  lover  old  and  wise
between  two  younger  lovers  equally  divided
With  words  so  sweet  and  a  smile
that  would  enamor  even  a  man  wild–––
this  gift  through  brigh t  and  amorous  rays
caused  the  two  lovers  to  change  their  faces.
"
“Such  a  pair  of  lovers  the  sun  will  never  see,
he  said, laughing  while  he  sighed;
and  holding  both, he  turned  to  look  at  one
and  then  the  other.
Thus  he  divided  the  roses  and  the  words,
so  that  even  now  my  heart  is  glad  and  fears.
O happy  eloquence,  O joyful  day!

CONTRAPPUNTO  BESTIALE
Malcolm  Ottaway,  Bass, sings :
“Nulla  fi d es  gobbis
Similiter  est  zoppis,
Si squerzus  bonus  est,
Super  annalia  scribe.”
The  other  soloists  are :
Constance  Stirling,  cuckoo
Rachel  Gardner,  owl
Susan  Lawson,  cat
Ann  Baer,  dog

MEI NS TRAURENS  IST

DA  L E   BELLE  CONTRADE

From  the  beautiful  villages  of  the  East,
clear  and  happy
rises  Ciprigna (the  dawn)
And  I received  in  the  arms  of  my  divine
idol
That  pleasure  which  does  not  exist  humanly
When  I heard  twofold  an  ardent  sigh
“Hope  of  my  heart, sweet  desire,
Are  you  leaving?  Alas!
Do  you  leave  me  alone?  Oh,  God!
What  will  become  of  me  here,  dark  and
dolorous?
Ah,  my  cruel  love!
Well  I  court  your  sweetness

Yet  I  doubt  your  caresses  are  well  intended
Since  it  still  gives  you  pleasure
That  my  extreme joy  terminates  in  tears.”
I was  unable  to  say  more,  so  closely  were
we joined ,
Repeating  the  embraces  in  so  many  knots
That  the  ivy  and  the  acanthus  were  never

more  entwined.

\

My  sadness ,
the  cause  of  my  brokenness,
which  I  can  tell  no–one  but  you,
my  radiant  sun,
is  that  I  bear  pain  because  of  you.
I  would  rather  ––  believe  me  ––
accept  death
than  part  from  you  like  this.

DIE  BRUNNLIN
From  those  flowing fountains
one  should  drink;
wink  at  your  dear  companion,
if  you  have  one.
Yes, a wink  with  your  eyes
and  a kick  with  your  foot  ––
Tough  luck  if  you  have  to  avoid  your companion!

GOD’S  WORLD (by  EDNA ST.  VINCENT  MILLAY)

0 world, I  cannot  hold thee  close  enough!
Thy  winds,  thy  wide grey  skies!
Thy  mists  that  roll and  rise!
Thy  woods,  this  autumn day,  that  ache  and  sag
And  all  but  cry  with  colour! Th a t  g a un t  c ra g
To  crush!  To lift  the lean  of  that  black  bluff!
World,  World,  I  cannot get  thee  close  enough!
Long  have  I known  a  glory  in  it  all,
But  never  knew  I  this :
Here  such  a  passion i s
As  stretcheth  me  apart,–––  Lord ,  I  do  fear
Thou ’st  made  the  world too  beautiful  this  year ;
My  soul  is  all  but  out of  me,–––  let  fall
No  burning  leaf ; prithee, let  no  bird  call.
HERZLICH  L I E B   HAB’  I C H DICH, 0 HERR

Versus  I
With  all  my  heart  I love  Thee, Lord ;
I  pray  Thee  ne ’er  to  forsake  me
With  Thy  precious  aid  and  grace.
Worldly  pleasures  I  abandon,
Ask  naught  on  earth  nor  in  heaven,
But  Thine  own  secure  Presence.
And  were  my  heart  itself  to  break,
In  Thee  could  I  fi n d  solace,
Thou art  goal  of  all  my  longing,
By  Thine  own  blood  am  I redeemed.
Lord Jesus  Christ, my  God  and  Lord ,
Save  me  from  all  tribulation!

VERSUS
These  are,  Lord, received  as  gift  from  Thee.
Body  and  Soul,  and  all  I  own
In  this  poor  life  on earth,
To  be  used  to  sing  Thy  praises,
To  help  and  serve  my  neighbor ;
So  give  me  Grace  to  do  this.
Protect  me, Lord , from  false  doctrine,
From  Satanic  death  and  lies  shield  me,
Preserve  me  in  all  suffering ,
Let  me  bear  the  Cross  in  patience.
Lord  Jesus  Christ, my  Lord  and  God,
Comfort  my  soul  in  deathly  need!

Versus ITT
Lord , let  at  last  Thine  angels  come,
To  Abraham ’s  bosom  bear  me  home;
My  body  in  its  resting  place,
So  soft, and  free  of  suffering ,
Let  sleep,  till  the  Day  of Judgement–––
And  then, from  death  awaken  me,
To behold  Thee with  mine  own  eyes,
In  fullest joy, 0 Son  of  God ,
My  Saviour  and  my  fount  of Grace.
Lord  Jesus  Christ,  give  ear  to  me,
I shall  praise  Thee  eternally.
Amen.

MAGN IFICAT  I N  D ,  JOHANN  SEBASTIAN  BACH
The  fi rs t  Christmas  at  Leipzig  gives  a  good  idea of  the creative  fury  that
possessed  Johann Sebastian  Bach.  On  each  of  the  three  feast–days  he  not  only  offered
a new  cantata, but  also, in  the  vesper  service, his  new  Magnificat was  performed

Magnificat is  one  of  the  few  works  that  Bach  composed  on  a Latin  text, here
using  Mary ’s  hymn from  the  Vulgate which  ends  with  the  familiar  doxology,  ‘Gloria
Patri.‘  To  this  setting  Bach added  four  independent  pieces, based  partly  on  German,
partly  on  Latin  texts  he (Bach) found  in a  Christmas  cantata  by  Johann Kuhnau, his
predecessor  in Leipzig.  The  first, a four–part motet  based  on  the  Lutheran  Christmas
song,  ‘Vom  Himmel Hoch';  the second,  ‘Freut  Euch  und Jubiliert’ (Rejoice  and  be  glad)
set for  three–part women ’s  voices  and  tenors ;  the  third  employs  the liturgical  text

“Gloria in excelsis  Deo ’ and  is  set  for  five–part chorus ;  and  the  fourth  is  a  duet
for  Soprano  and  Bass soli,  ‘Virga Jesse  Floruit’ which speaks  of  the  coming  of  our
Lord  in  the  likeness  of man in vocal  lines  of  unusually  long  and  melismatic  character.
In  1730,  Bach  revised  this  version of  Magnificat and  changed  the  key  from
E  fl a t  to  B, a more  suitable  transposition for  trumpets.  He  also  added  flutes and
removed  the four  additional  pieces.  As  a result,  they  are  usually  omitted  from modern
performances.  However, because  they  are  particularly  imbued with  the  Christmas  spirit
and  bring  the  monumental  character  of the  main  work  into  full relief, we  take  pleasure
in  including  them  in  tonight’s  performance.

GLORTA,  FRANCIS  POULENC

Francis Poulenc was a  member  of  the renowned  French  group  ‘Les  Six’  who  are

Berenice  Bramson was  born  in  Omaha, Nebraska,
where  she  began serious study  of  the  piano with  Enid
Lindborg, a pupil of  Ernest Hutcheson.  She  came  east
to  continue her  piano  and  academic  studies  at  Hunter
College, New  York  University  and  Columbia.  The  young
planist’s  voice was soon  discovered  and  she  began her
vocal  studies with  Boris  Voronovsky.  She  also studied
and  coached  with  such  famous  musical  figures as  Pierre
Bernac, Estelle Liebling, Paul  Ulanowsky  and  Fausto
Cleva, acquiring  her  unparalleled  repertoire  of  lieder,
orchestra  works, operatic  roles  and  chamber  music  works
Of  her  New  York  recital  in  March  1973, Peter  Davis
wrote in  the  Times:  '"Very  rarely  does  an  unheralded
singer  appear  in  Carnegie  Recital Hall who  can stand

comparison with  international superstars.  On  the basis
of  her  concert  Sunday  night, Berenice  Bramson can
match  talents with any soprano recitalist  before  the
public  today.”
c

known for  their  violint reaction  to  the  aesthetic  ideals  of  the  pre–war  generation

of  composers.

Choral  music  always  had  a  great  attraction for  Poulenc  and  many  of  his
compositions  in  this  fi eld  are  of  a religious nature.  Gloria, written  in  1959, was
commissioned  by  the  Koussevitzky  Foundation and  fi rst  performed  under  Charles Munch
in January,  1961.
:
Whether writing  for  orchestra  or  voices, the  art  of  Francis  Poulenc  is  pre–
eminently  vocal.  He combines  in  his  Gloria  a sure instinct for  grace  and  elegance
with  a  profound  understanding  and  rendering of  the  more serious  undertones  of  his
text.

PROGRAM  NOTES

On  the basis
of  her  concert  Sunday  night, Berenice  Bramson can
match  talents with any soprano recitalist  before  the
public  today.”
c

known for  their  violint reaction  to  the  aesthetic  ideals  of  the  pre–war  generation

of  composers.

He combines  in  his  Gloria  a sure instinct for  grace  and  elegance
with  a  profound  understanding  and  rendering of  the  more serious  undertones  of  his
text.
