TRANSLATIONS
Fischerweise (Fisherman’s Song)
The fisherman no sorrow, no pain, no  grief assails;
At break of day he casts off his boat with easy mind.
Peace still lies all around in wood and field and stream,
But he, with his singing, awakes the golden sun.

He sings, while he is working, from full and lively breast,
His labors give him vigor, his vigor zest for life.
And soon in motley fashion, the depths will teem and sound,
And, splashing, break the heavens that on the waters rest.
But whoever wants to set nets, needs eyes both good and clear,
Must be cheerful as the waves, and free as is the tide.
There on the bridge is fishing the shepherdess.
Sly thing, give up your trickery, this fish you’ll not take in.

G loria in excelsis Deo

Zigeunerleben (Gypsy Life)
I n the shady forest, between the beechtrees,
there’s a stirring and bustling, and whispers are heard.
The flickering light of the fire dances
around colorful figures, leaves, and rocks.
This is where the gypsies meet,
with eyes flashing and hair flowing,
some nursed at the Nile’s sacred waters,
some burned by Spain’s southern sun.

‘Round the fire, piled with green branches,
are the men, untamed and wild,
while the women crouch, preparing th e meal,
filling the old cups with wine.
Then songs and legends are shared around,
of Spanish gardens blooming and bright,
and magical legends of times of peril and danger
are passed on to all by the elders.

Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace
to men of good will.
We praise you, we bless you, we worship you, we glorify you.

A darkeyed maiden begins to dance.
Bright as a torch burns her passionate glance.
To the strumming of guitars and the ringing of cymbals,
wild and wilder they dance and sing.

Ubi caritas
Where there is charity and love, God is there.
The love of Christ has gathered us together.
Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Let us revere and love the living God.
And from a sincere heart let us love one another.

Then weary, they lie down and rest.
Beneath the beechtrees they slumber,
And they who were banned from their homeland
See it now only in dreams.
But when in the east the morning awakes
so vanish the images of the night.
The shuffling of hooves at the breaking of dawn;

they’ve vanished who knows where they’ve gone?

(15641628)
Praise the Lord, O my soul.  While 1 live, 1 will praise the Lord;
I will sing praises unto my god while I have my being.

Even more so from their smiles and grace.
But this is not the cheerful unveiled gaiety
That sin gs and dances under the beautiful summ er nigh t stars;
it is a fi erce celebration, a lau gh f ull of thrills,
Ceasing after drinks have inflamed the mouth.
They complain that they have not yet lived. These are barbarous children .
The gods were jealous of the lastborn of these.

(18741947)
The tenderhearted women of Brittany weep at the edge of the sea.
The bitterhearted men of Brittany are too f ar to hear.
But come Easter or Christmas, the men and women
Find themselves close to tons of eau de vie and mead.
The sadness of their people disappears from their eyes;

ChingaRing Chaw (Old A merican Songs)

Light, warm and heavy as pure gold

. Barbara and Conrad Chaffee

it is that exquisite morning hour reddened by a sudden sun
Through the autumn fog the garden’s leaves fall.
Their fall is slow. One can follow them with one’s gaze,
Recognizing the oak by its leaf of copper, the maple by its leaf of blood.
The last, the rustiest, fall from stripped branches,
But it is not yet winter. . .

A blonde light saturates nature, and, in the rosecolored air,
you would think it was snowing gold.

Oh. how soon the cycle ends, Spring turns into wintertime!
Oh how soon all happiness turns to sad silence!
The last sounds soon fade! The last songbirds are soon flown!
The last green is soon gone! They all want to return home!
Oh, how soon the cycle ends. Merriness turns to longing sorrow.
Were you a dream, you thoughts of love?
Sweet as spring and fast disappearing?
Only one thing will never wane: The longing that never goes.
Ah, how soon the cycle ends:
Oh how soon all happiness tums to sad silence! (Karl Klingemann)

4. Suspiria

O would I were where I would be!
There would 1 be where I am not:
For where I am would I not be,
And where I would be I can not.

5. The Miracle

Behold a wonder here! Love hath received his sight!
Which many hundred years hath not beheld the light.
Such beams infused be by Cynthia in his eyes
As first have made him see and then have made him wise.
Love now no more will weep for them that laugh the while!
Nor wake for them that sleep, nor sigh for them that smile!
So powerful is the Beauty that Love doth now behold,
A s Love is turned to Duty that’s neither blind nor bold.
Thus Beauty shows her might to be of double kind;
In giving Love his sight and striking Folly blind.

Peter Browne, conductor

Weep you no more. sad fountains; What need you flow so fast?

Look how the snowy mountains Heaven’s sun doth gently waste!
But my sun ’s heav ’nly eyes view not your weeping, That now soflly lies sleeping.
Sleep is a reconciling. a rest that peace begets;

7. C robbed Age and Youth

Crabbed Age and Youth cannot live together:
Youth is full of pleasure, Age is full of care;
Youth is like a summer mom, Age like winter weather:
Youth like summer brave, Age like winter bare.
Youth is full of sport. Youth is nimble, Age is lame;
Youth is hot and bold, Youth is wild, and Age is tame.
Age. 1 do abhor thee; Youth, I do adore thee; O my love is young!
Age. I do defy thee: O sweet shepherd hie thee! For methinks thou stay’st too long.

                  <text>Who is Max Reinhardt?
The celebrated Austrian theater director Max Reinhardt, recognized in America primarily for his elaborate productions of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Franz Werfel’s The Eternal Road, and Karl Vollmoeller’s The Miracle, was born in 1873 at Baden near Vienna, Austria and died in New York City in 1943. Reinhardt’s illustrious career takes on added significance because it coincides with a major shift in the evolution of the modern theater: the ascendancy of the director as the key figure in theatrical production. Reinhardt’s reputation in international theater history is secured by the leading role he played in this transformation, as well as by his innovative use of new theater technology and endless experimentation with theater spaces and locales, which together redefined traditional relationships between actor and audience toward a new participatory theater.

What is a prompt book?
The prompt book is a master copy of the production script and contains a wealth of instructions and information alongside the basic text of the play. As well as the actors’ lines, you will often see cues for music, movement, light, and many other aspects of stage business. It may also contain sketches of how a piece of staging is supposed to look, or which costume a character should wear in a scene.

Why are his important?
Reinhardt’s directorial prompt books reflect the ways in which he made plays by major playwrights, including Ibsen, Shakespeare and Wilder, his own. The prompt books contain notations denoting changes in the script, actor moves and technical cues, instructions on how sound, props and scenery were used, and stage drawings. They help us to reconstruct Reinhardt’s techniques and directions in productions.

Acknowledgements
Thank you to the Gladys Kriebel Delmas Foundation who generously provided the funding to make this extraordinary project possible.
