Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in Gmajor .
Allegro

I. S. Bach

(16851750)

Andante

Presto
Soloists:  Georgetta  Maiolo, Flute
Harry Lincoln, Flute
James Wallenberg, Violin
The  six  Brandenburg  Concertos  were  written  during  Bach’s  employment  in  the
court at Coethen, a period during which he composed much of his secular instrumental
music. They were dedicated on March 24, 1721, to Christian Ludwig, the Margrave of

the Prussian province of  Brandenburg.

The solo group  (concertino)  for the fourth concerto was originally scored for two
recorders  and  violin.  The three movements  are of  contrasting  character, the  first  in  a
dancelike triple meter, the second  an  Andante with many phrased couplets  giving the
effect of  chains of sighs, and the third is a fast fugal Presto which features florid passage
work for the solo violin.  Throughout the work the concertino interacts  with the back
ground group (ripieno) more in the sense of friendly rivalry (“concertare”) and sharing
of materials than the setting off  of a solo to an accompaniment of secondary interest.

Concerto for two pianos in dminor

Allegro ma non troppo

F. Poulenc

(18991963)

Larghetto

Allegro molto
Soloists:  Madeleine Brooks
Christine Lindsay
Poulenc  was commissioned to  write this concerto for a  performance by the  com
poser  and  Jacque  F ebrier  at  the  International  Festival  of  Contemporary  Music  at
Venice in 1932. As is characteristic of many of  Poulenc’s works the concerto is sophisti
cated and gay, yet uncomplicated. The buoyant first movement closes with effects which
reflect the Balinese music Poulenc heard at the Colonial Exposition  in 1931.  The slow
movement’s outer sections are reminiscent of  Mozart while the middle part of the move
ment is openly Romantic in style. The very free Finale is exuberant  and brilliant.  The
total work is a successful treatment of the twopiano concerto, a  genre explored by few
composers.

INTERMISSION

Symphony No. 94 in Gmajor ( “Surprise”) .

I. Haydn

(17321809)

Adagio cantabile; Vivace assai
Andante
Menuetto–Allegro molto
Allegro di molto

This is one of  the bestknown  of  the twelve  “London” symphonies  Haydn  wrote
during two sojourns in England, 17911795.  These last  symphonies by  Haydn are ma
ture works of  great imagination which  influenced composers through much of  the nine
teenth  century.  The opening  notes of  the slow introduction  to the first  movement  are
transformed, with slight  rhythmical change,  into the main theme  of  the  Allegro.  The
slow movement, a  theme with f our variations, is noted,  of  course, f or its tutti surprise

chord at one of  the cadences.  More droll are the  humorous contrasts  in the pompous
second  variation in a minor key.  The seemingly  straightforward  minuet  breaks  into  a
clever piece of  canonic writing in its second section. The last movement, jolly and bois
terous, hides a  humorous and fast moving reference to  the first  movement  which  is  a
challenge for the listener to catch.
