<text>Who is Max Reinhardt?
The celebrated Austrian theater director Max Reinhardt, recognized in America primarily for his elaborate productions of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Franz Werfel’s The Eternal Road, and Karl Vollmoeller’s The Miracle, was born in 1873 at Baden near Vienna, Austria and died in New York City in 1943. Reinhardt’s illustrious career takes on added significance because it coincides with a major shift in the evolution of the modern theater: the ascendancy of the director as the key figure in theatrical production. Reinhardt’s reputation in international theater history is secured by the leading role he played in this transformation, as well as by his innovative use of new theater technology and endless experimentation with theater spaces and locales, which together redefined traditional relationships between actor and audience toward a new participatory theater.

What is a prompt book?
The prompt book is a master copy of the production script and contains a wealth of instructions and information alongside the basic text of the play. As well as the actors’ lines, you will often see cues for music, movement, light, and many other aspects of stage business. It may also contain sketches of how a piece of staging is supposed to look, or which costume a character should wear in a scene.

Why are his important?
Reinhardt’s directorial prompt books reflect the ways in which he made plays by major playwrights, including Ibsen, Shakespeare and Wilder, his own. The prompt books contain notations denoting changes in the script, actor moves and technical cues, instructions on how sound, props and scenery were used, and stage drawings. They help us to reconstruct Reinhardt’s techniques and directions in productions.

Acknowledgements
Thank you to the Gladys Kriebel Delmas Foundation who generously provided the funding to make this extraordinary project possible. The genesis of the Cantate de Noel dates back to 1940 when Honegger was setting to
music the first portion oi‘ La Passion de Selzach as it was conceived by the poet, Caesa r
von Arx, which began with the episode of the Nativity of Christ. “It is this pa rt of the
work,” writes the composer, “which has served me as the basis for the Cantate de Noel,
not without undergoing in the course of its writing a nu mber of necessary changes. The
first chorus, the 12th Century plainsong Vent Emmanuel, brings the anguished appeal of
humanity to the Saviou r . ‘
In answer to this cry, the archangel announces to the shepherds the coming of the Messiah.
We then hear Freu Dich, O Israel; the 16th Century air, Es Ist Ein Reis Enlspmngen; the
French folksong, ll Est Ne Le Divin Enfant; Van Himmel Bach, Ikr Engelein Kommt; and the
famous Die Heilige Nacht, melody by Franz G ruber — all intermingled and terminating in
Psalm 117, Laudate Dominum,. An orchestral postlude concludes the work.
The Cantate de Noel is scored for double woodwinds, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones,
ha rp, organ, s trings, bari tone solo, a nd two choruses (mixed and children).

TRANSLAT IONS
Ziemas svet ki sa brauk usi
Lo, behold a sleigh is coming, stall ion prancing, bells jingling.
Hurry, children, wait no more, Winterfest is at the door.
Look and see how nobly dressed is the steed of Winterfest:
Golden reins and ribbons streaming, diamonds in the bridle.
O ’er the hilltop God is slowly riding, gently guiding,
Light the way with fires. Bring him into your humble dwelling.
Balts sniedzins snieg uz sku jinam
A gentle snow is on the ground, on bush and tree.
The sleigh bells jingle and I am happy.
Tonight I feel my spirit fly into the heavens
Where angels sing on golden clouds and pearly seas.
Tonight I feel that I could be like the heavenly angels,
And shine like sta rs above the worl d and those I love.
I am happy as a child can be, surro unded by family.
I am finely dressed for Christmas E ve and feeling blessed.
I feel content and whole, my heart is filled with delight.
Will it always be this way? Or will it change?

G ut yontef aykh, k inder
We come to you children, with gre etings heartfelt:
a dreidel, a candl e, and Chanukah gelt.

O magnum Mysterium
O great mystery and wondrous sacrament,

That animals should see the newborn Lord lying in their manger!
Blessed is the Virgin whose womb
Was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia!

AI HaNisim
For the miracles and the wonders,
For the redemption and the battles t hat you made for our forefathers,
In those days at this time.

Boruch ate, zing t d e r t at e

“Blessed art Thou ” the father sings as he lights the candles.
And the mild. del icate light falls upon his pale face.
A fire that ’s holy and precious shines in his eyes:
And this stooped, tired man begins to stand erect.
And it seems to me — and we believe it —
There still is som ething here, there remains much to love.
The hour is a hol y one.
Old sounds, long forgotten? But no, they are still resounding.
Sing father, “Boruch Ate. . I am still your child.

Gloria in excelsis
Glory to God in the Highest.
Chan ukah P rayer
Maoz tzur Rock of ages.
Y’shuati l’cha naeh let our song praise
L ‘shabeiach your saving powe r.

M a ri a Wiegenlied
Mary sits in the rose bower, rocking her Jesus Child,
Softly through the foliage the warm wind of summer blows.
At her feet there sings a brightlypl umaged bird:
Go, sweet child, to sleep, go now to sleep!
Lovely is your sm ile. lovelier your slumber’s joy,
Lay your weary l ittle head close to your mother’s breast,
Go, sweet child, to sleep, go now to sleep!

Who is it who has lit these thin candles like stars abo ve.
The children themselves know that today is Chanukah.
Every happy candle, every dear candle, burns, hints, sparkles.
The children stand around and thei r joy is boundless.

I am a dreidel, I lose and I win,
With a nun and a gimel a hey and a shin.
I am a candle, I burn and give light,
To brighten this dark world for us on this night,
I ’m Chanukah gelt, you can keep me to day
But tomorrow to poor friends please give me away.
We come to you children . . .

About The Performers
PETER BROWNE, conductor of the Harpur Chorale, is a graduate of Bard

College, and received his MM degree from Binghamton University in 1980. He was
an organ performance major at both institutions, serving as chapel organist during
his student years at Bard. While at Binghamton University, he studied organ with
Paul Jordan and Searle Wright, and choral conducting with David Buttolph. He has
done additional coursework at Westminster Choir College and several other schools.
In 1994, he was awarded a fellowship to study choral conducting with Sir David
Willcocks, former music director of King's College Chapel, Cambridge, and the Bach
Choir of London. Browne has served as a church musician in Pennsylvania,
Connecticut, and New York, and has been organist-choir director at Trinity Episcopal
Church in Binghamton since 1981. He was interim choral director at Binghamton
University in 1986-87, and continues as accompanist for the University Chorus. He
has appeared as a conductor, soloist, and accompanist in the eastern U.S.

In 1847 J.A. Schmeller published a thirteenthcentu rymanuscriptcolleotlon of songs

which had originated in a monastery in the foothills of the Bavarian nlps, and to which

he gave the title Carmina Burana or “Songs of Benediktbeuern,” alter the name of the
monastery. Carl Orff came across the edition in 1935, and finished composing the
score in the following year ; the fir st performance was in F rankfurtamMain on
J une 8, 1937.

The poems, written by wandering scholars, fu r the most part before the year 12 00,
include love songs, d rinking songs, and songs in praise of the vagabond o rder (all in–

tended as dancesongs), as well as rec ruiting songs for the Crusades, complaints on
fortune, attacks on aimony, and various other topical poems. Carl Orff has arranged
selections from the texts into three groups ; the invocation to fortune, which precedes
the fir s t group, i s repeated at the very end of the work.
