QUARTET IN A MINOR, OP, 29
Even for Franz Schubert the Quartet in A Minor is surpassingly
lyric work. Written in a period of loneliness, (1822) and as a deliberate
preparation for larger symphonic works, it shows his complete mastery
of the quartet. The whole hasa very vernal quality, The first movement
alternates between pale sunshine and storm, thaw and chill. The
persistent rhythms of the second violin (so limpid, as in Schubert’s
“Brook” songs) and the ’cello (so vital) unite the entire movement
and echo in the others, unif ying the whole quartet.
The second movement is on the model of Haydn’s cumulative
variation slow movements. Its theme is yet another form of the
dactylic phrase which is Schubert’s motto theme, found everywhere.
(Rosamunde, piano Impromptus, etc.).
The Menuetto is no minuet at all, but is f rankly German Dances,
Waltzes, and Landler of the kind that Schubert improvised for his
f riends on many occasions. Of an almost unbearable wistfulness
and nostalgia, it begins (surely deliberately) with a quotation f rom his
own song on Schiller’s text, “The Gods of Greece. ” “Beauteous world,
where art thou ? Come again O lovely age of nature’s blossoming. ”
This confirms the direct subjective impression of springlonging
which emanates f rom the first two movements,
The last movement employs Hungarian motives and has been
criticized as an intrusive addition. These critics fail to understand
that such folkloristic themes and the repetitive Rondolike treatment
are precisely the celebration of the fertility of the earth the return
of Flora and the abundance of Ceres, and as such is the inevitable
and only possible conclusion.

QUARTET IN A MINOR, OP, 132
This quartet was written in 1825 and is the second of the set of
three commissioned by P rince Galitzin. Sketches for the first and
last movements appear already in 1824 and the working out was begun
at once after the completion of the Quartet in Eflat, Op. 127, in Feb
ruary of 1825 was interrupted for several weeks by the severe illness
which overtook Beethoven that Spring. This circumstance, we will
see, contributes to the content of the work. Its composition was
resumed in March and finished toward the end of July. The first
movement begins with an enigmatic “cabbalistic” phrase, a secret
symbol which has the character of a mysterious introduction – “a key. ”
It is that, but more besides, for in reality it is the complementary
counterpoint to the winged phrase which is “released ” in the high
register of the cello after the fleetpassage of the first violin. Beethoven
in fact combines the cumulative effect of introduction with the function
�of exposition, for these contrasting yet matchi ng halves constitute
the first group of themat ic elements whose introduction is the “plot”
of the movement. They are never long absent, in spite of the intro
duction of contrasting material. The final pages of the movement are
notable for their sonority, and eloquent reduction of conv incing clarity
of the origina l “cryptogram. ”
The Scherzo sets aside jovial hilarit y and dynamism for detailed,
elegant, witty counte rpoint. The T rio exploits the same peasant
instru ment effects (hurdy gurdy) whic h were in the original mov ement,
first designed for this place moved by Beethoven to op. 130 ( Alla
danza tedesca). In the present movement the effect is, on account of
the key even more overt and colo rful.
The third movement refers directly to Beethoven’s illness in
1825. It was labelled by Betthoven originally in French ‘C hantD e
reconnaissance, en style lydique, offert a la Divinite, pa r unc o n
valescent. ” It is in Lied form, strophic with three va ried st rophes
and two intervening, contrasting, ref rains. The Lydian mode is a
scale FF. with B natural instead of Bfl at. The effect is a curious one,
a kind of enforced inactivity (which it indeed describes). The ref rains
(in normal D ma jor are labelled also Neue Kraft Fuhlend (feeling of
new st rength). The last trophe labelled “with most intimate sentiment”
varies the original in such a way as to provide su btle and curious
links to the materials of the fir st movement. The comparison to the
equall y autobiographical slow movement of the piano Sonata Op. 110
(which also concerns itself with an illness and convalescence) is ines
capable.
The Finale begins Alla Marcia —the march serves as fanfare
introduction— invocation (an element, it will be observed that is absent
f rom its proper place, the opening of the fir st mov ement.) It is c on
nected by a passage of recitativo declamat ion (Violin I), reminiscent
of the Ninth Symphony, to the finale proper, a Rondo of Dionysian
abandon.

There is no better way that I can remember Herpur
College than by my sweet blonde drive-in teller at the
Bank down the hill. This is d edicated to you lo~ely
scratch counter: Miss Sullivan, for years I've held my
breath a s I pulled into your window. How many times
have I waited my place in line for you. And when I
arrive, I'm sure that I can smell your fragreace, even
through the bullet proof glass . . . Some mornings,
when I drive in to make a deposit to cover one of
yesterday's hasitly drawn checks, still a little b it groggy
and dreaming that I still lie in bed, I arrive just as
you're lifting the shade. For a second I forg et what
I've come for and think we've both just woken up together. Then, together, we discover ourselves in the
real world of Christmas Clubs, debts, installments, receipts and change.
There was one time, about a year and a half ago,
do you recall it? I had been up in the swamp behind the campus sampling some fine kif which I decided lo buy. Down to the bank to cash a check . . •
Euphoric . . . The sight of you . . . I thought my
hand held yours through the mechanical drawer as
you handed me that thirty dollars. I stayed, my hand
in the drawer an extra second and you smiled as
finally, ecstatic, I withdrew.

These past 4 years have witnessed a number of
minor battles in the stru99le between the small personalized college and the anonymous university. Here at
Harpur about all of these battles were lost. Our first
year saw the demise of Brand X Newing; and the addition of Hall B and the ensuing clamor over "the
regs;" work ~an on CW and LH and PS buildings

unveiled and displayed calling for 7500 by '76 with
the loss of more trees. To this end we have witnessed
the destruction of our swamp (temporarily reprieved
Hah? bullshit!) and relocation of 11 pipeline to build
11 fourth complex (When?) cutting down more Woods.

Brook in opening basketball; (no meal tickets say
SUAB; and we have the wonderful togetherness of
tripling.

If I have learned anything in these last few years,
it is that nothing is more important than persons and
my relationships with them. Not even my own growth
can occur in an interpersonal vacuum.
All of us who have ever been involved in institutional change (on or off campus) have done so only
out of a commitment to, in some small way, improve
the life of those affected by that institution. Due to
the pace of political activity, this fundamental truth people come first - is oRen the easiest forgotten.
To those who I have come to know despite my
political involvement, I am grateful. To those whose
sensibilities have been trampled because of my overtealo usness, I am sorry.
To those who have made me laugh when I was
depressed: to those who put me down when I had to
be; to those who gave me support when I needed it;

You are responsible for this situation! So we, of the 1970
COLONIST thought that you might want to say a few
words to these people, through the vehicle of the yearbook. Perhaps you could reiterate the two-sentence theme
which is the jist of all the courses you have taught, or
perhaps even something briefer!
But all kidding aside, we would be interested in print·
ing whatever you have to say; poetry, prose, graphics!
and hope you will drop us some copy.

fall. All responses are printed below, along with other
Letters to the Edi tor.
A Meu•ge of Farewe ll
I splN!k as t he conscience of those few ded icated
faculty who have somehow really hung on to the belief
that knowledge and truth and beauty do not change intrinsically through the ages. As such I wish I could extend my felicitations to the graduating class. Instead I
feel that I must extend my apologies and even my condolences, for you have been betrayed by those in whose
trust you placed yourselves for the past four years. Yours
is, perhaps, the first graduating class to feel the full
impact of what is often called the exciting spirit of the
new generations. I am convinced that part of this s pirit
was generated and is fostered by dark and negative
forces . These go under various and sundry names such
as the New Left, the New Intellectuals, the Free Spirits,
Young Socialists, etc. Regardless of what they call themselves, only their consciences can reveal whether or not
they are offshoots of the bitterness that comes with failure.
If not unsuccessful classroom-teachers-become-administrators, they were unsuccessful students-become-activists w ho
felt a special aversion to their background and training.
Sometimes this background was the family situation, sometimes a demanding graduate school, sometimes hatred cw
fear of the classroom, sometimes a drive for popularity,
but most often an aversion for those qualities of knowledge that demand hard work and dedication.
Unfortunately for your class these forces have dominated for the past half dozen years both nationally and
on this campus and have won many recruits because these
have found new quick avenues for selling their wares, or
for a speedier career. What they have done may take many
decades to undo for they have done serious harm to young
minds, minds that needed and sought guidance and instead
were handed the reins of power and decision. Immature,
flattered , intoxicated with power that was being handed
to them by the beautiful people in charge of things,
what else could such young minds do but take advantage
of this new source of energy and excitement? As a result
the very weakest elements of our society, the cowards, the
effetes, the failures, the frauds, have come to hold sway
over the intellectual life of this nation. Fortunately there
are indications that the tide is beginning to ebb. But
meanwhile generations of potential young intellectuals
have completed their education ignorant of what it was
really meant to convey and perhaps bitter over the sham
that their degree represents.
My one hope is that, perhaps, this negative experience
may result in a reaction that will demand the return of
the rights, of time, of tradition, and of human dignity.
Perhaps the negative experience w ill show that while
nothing was really acquired, nothing more than valuable
time was lost. Perhaps, in short, something positive could
still result from this betrayal of trust by intellectuals. I
certainly hope so and w ish you well along these lines.
Meanwhile please accept my apologies and my regrets for
the blindness and cowardice of a generation without convictions, of a generation afraid of its young, of a genera
tion that surrendered its leadership to eager but unprepared minds. We have made a sham of adulthood and
can therefore only bequeath to you a legacy of moral
cowardice and spiritual emptiness. Please forgive us.
You have two choices only:

An account of the resource
<p>Binghamton University’s yearbook was published under several different titles. It was first called <em>The Colonist</em> in 1948, then became <em>The Yearer</em> in 1970, <em>Pegasus</em> in 1973 and finally <em>Binghamton University</em> in 2004. Yearbooks are a popular resource for alumni and can be used for primary source research. Each book typically contains class lists, class photos, candid photos, faculty and academic department information, campus and institutional facts, illustrations and ads, and editorials. They document student organizations, campus events, athletic teams as well as local and global events. Yearbooks offer a window into the traditions and culture of a time and place from the point of view of a select group of students on behalf of the student body. They are among the richest sources of student-driven content for an academic institution. �THE CASADESUS FAMILY
Robert Casadesus was born in
Paris into a family of artists and
musicians. A t the age of four he
began pianistic study and when
he was twelve entered the Paris
Conservatory.While there he won
all the major awards and em
barked on a career in which, in
addition to excelling in concert
and recital appearances, he has in
cluded the composition of almost
sixty works.
He made his American debut
with the New York Philharmonic
orchestra i n 1935 when he was
already considered in Europe to be
the most eminent of French pian
ists. I t was im media tely af ter this
concert that Toscanini, who was
in the audience, invited Casadesus
to play under him the following
season.
The 196768 season ma rked his
94 th, 95th and 96th appearances
with the Philharmonic and his
200th. 2015t, and 202nd appear
ances in the city of New York–
almost unparalleled among con
temporary pianists.
Robert Casadesus also appears
jointly in recitals with his wife,
Gaby, whom he met at the Paris
Conservatory when he was enjoy
ing the first triumphs of his career.
One day he came to the conserva
tory to show his former teacher,
Louis Diemer, a twopiano work
he had composed. The professor
introduced him to his current prize
pupil, Gaby L’Hote, and the two
young artists performed Robert’s
composition. Soon after they were
married and began a musical col
laboration that has taken the dis
tinguished cou ple a rou nd the
world.
I t was a t t h e suggestion of the
la te Dimitri Mitropoulos tha t their
son, Jean, joined his illustrious
pa ren ts in performances of t he
concerto for three pianos and or
chestra by I. S. Bach. Later these
three great artists added the M o
za r t th ree piano concerto to their
repertoire. A new three piano
work, this time by Robert, had its
premiere performance during the
sum mer o f 1965 w h e n t h e t h ree
Casadesus played with the New
York Philharmonic at the French
American Festival in New York.
Jean Casadesus’ professional
career was brilliantly launched
when he made his debut as solo
ist wi t h E uge n e O r m a nd y i n 194 7.
The following autumn he won the
First Meda l at the Geneva Inter
national Competition and since
then has toured e x tensi v ely
throughout Europe, North and
South America and Israel. He has
appeared frequently with major
orchestras as solo guest artist a nd
in three piano works with his par
ents. They have played together
in Europe with the Santa Cecilia
Orchestra in Rome and the So
cieté des Concerts in Paris, and in
this country with the New York
Philharmonic, and the orchestras
of St. Louis, Kansas City, Balti
more and Miami.

THE NEW YORK WOODWIND QUINTET
The other of the chamber en
sembles in residence at the State
University of New York at Bing
hamton is the New York Wood
wind Quintet.
Since 1952 t he Quin tet has
ma inta ined its position of pre
eminence in the field of chamber
music through numerous concerts
in the United S tates and abroad,
radio and television appearances,
and highly praised recordings.
The Quintet is an ensemble of es
tablished solo artists well known
to the musical world. Their col
laboration has resulted in an en
semble which has prompted many
critics to classif y t he Quin tet i n
the highest category of chamber
music performance.

Quintet, which recently returned
f rom its second S ta te Depa r tm en t
tour of South America, has been
in residence at Harpur College
since 1967. Each member i s on
the faculty of the Music Depa rt
ment.

affair.” ]. S. Bach crea ted th e mul
ti(two, three, or four) keyboard
concerto for the uses of his own
circle of sons and pupils which
comprised a group of the best
keyboardists of that or any epoch.
It was accomplished by the simple
expedient of reworking, expand
ing or working to the model of al
ready existi ng conce rtos for t wo
or more violins of which those of
Vivaldi are the best known. The
prese nt wo rk is an ex ampl e. It e x
ploits the dynam ism and florid,
no t t o sa y glitte ring, ornam en ta
tion of the Baroq ue Italia n con
certo. The tutti sections contrast
with the solo portion: the princi
pal interest lies in the eloquence
of the individual solos (of which
there are three in the last move
ment ) and, as with Vivaldi, es
pecia lly in t he intric a te tex tures
created by the three keyboards
playi ng toget her.

written for a Salzburg family, a

ters, amateur pianists who had al

simple and elegant, whose form
and diction show the influence
upon Moza rt of the school of
pianists developed by expat riate

The development of his conduct

by his studies with Fritz Mahler,
Eleazar de Carvalho and Pierre
Monteux.

M r. Buttolph’s earliest associa
tions with music came through his
grandmother, a singer of lieder,
and his mother, a music teacher
and accompanist, as well as his
uncle, a composer for films in Hol
lywood.

the Music faculty at Harpur Col
lege i n 1965. H e is Di rector o f t he
Harpur Orchestra and the Harpur
Chorale.

Paul Hersh attended Yale University and studied piano with Eduard
Steuermann and Leonard Shure. As violist of the Lenox String Quartet,
he has concertized extensively in the United States, Canada, and Europe.
He has been artistinresidence and a member of the faculty of the
Berkshire Music Center, the Aspen Music Festival,the Spoleto Festival,
Lecturer in Music at Grinnell College, and is at present artistinresi
dence and member of the faculty at Harpur College, SUNY Binghamton.

An account of the resource
Binghamton University Music Department recordings is an audio collection of concerts and recitals given on campus by students, faculty, and outside musical groups. The physical collection consists of reel-to-reel tapes, cassette tapes, and compact discs. The recordings <a href="https://suny-bin.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/search?query=any,contains,Binghamton%20University%20Music%20Department%20tape%20recordings&tab=LibraryCatalog&search_scope=MyInstitution&vid=01SUNY_BIN:01SUNY_BIN&mode=basic&offset=0&conVoc=false">have been catalogued</a> and are located in <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/libraries/about/special-collections/">Special Collections</a>. In addition, the collection includes copies of programmes. <br /><br />The Libraries have begun making some of the collections available digitally on campus. These recordings are restricted to the Binghamton University Community.
