PROGRAM NOTES
Vanessa

Vanessa, a beautiful, wealthy woman in her mi.ct-forties, once had a
lover, Anatol. For twenty years she has been waiting in seclusion for
him to come back to her. She receives a letter announcing Anatol's coming, but the Anatol who arrives is not her lover but his twenty year old
son, also named Anatol. The younger Anatol seduces her niece, Erika,
on the first night of his visit but later decides to m9,rry Vanessa for her
wealth despite Erika's attempted suicide and the loss of his child. The
scene presented in tonight's performance occurs a month later; Anatol
and Vanessa are now married and preparing to leave for Paris to lead a
grand life.
A Hand of Bridge

"A Hand of Bridge" was first performed at the Festival of Two Worlds
in Spoleto, Italy in June of 1959. William Lewis, this evening's director,
sang the role of Bill.
The Medium
Monica, the 16 year old daughter of an alcoholic fake medium, a nd 18
year old Toby, a m ·1te who lives with them, are finding a bit of imaginary
glamour and gaiety in their drab lives throughplay-acting. "The Medium" and "The Telephone" were composed to be performed together and
were first presented in 1947.
The Consul
"The Consul" is an opera with great emotional impact for all people. It
concerns one woman's desperate attempt to get necessary cl earance to
leave a despotic country. She has been constantly harassed by a secret
policeman because of her husband's revolutionary activities. Her baby
had died of starvation and her mother-in-law is almost dead. In the scene
presented here, she is seeking help in the Consul's office for perhaps the
hundredth time. "The Consul" had its world premiere in March, 1950 at
the Schubert Theatre in Philadelphia.
The T elephone
"The Telephone" a short opera buffa, was composed as a curtainraiser for the longer opera, "The Medium." The two were first written
for the Ballet Society and presented in 1947 at the Heckscher Theater in
New York.

<text>PHILIPPE ENTREMONT shot into the musical firmament like
a  comet but soon became a  star. His scintillating combination of
French brio and brilliance, his extraordinary artistry, sensitivity and
flashing technique have led critics to describe him as “a titan” and
as “an aristocrat of the piano.” Internationally acclaimed, Entremont
occupies a preferred place in the ranks of the world’s virtuosi.
Especially noted for his sensuous interpretation of the romantic
repertory, the “electric,”  “magnetic,” “atomic pianist” is equally at

home in the works of Scarlatti and Stravinsky. He is known to au
diences  across  six  continents  through  his  concert  tours  and  his
Columbia  Records releases.
Tall and slim, with a Gallic charm, the globetrotting Frenchman
has been a perennial favorite with American concert audiences since
1953. Over a million of  his longplaying Columbia Records are in
American homes including his bestselling collaborations with Eu
gene Ormandy and  The Philadelphia Orchesta  and  with Leonard
Bernstein and  The New York Philharmonic.
Entremont’s doubleheader debut–a recital in Washington, D. C.

on January 4, 1953 and with symphony orchestra at Carnegie Hall
the following day–brought him instant recognition; in the words of
the New York  Times, he  “brought down  the house,” a feat: he has
repeated  wherever  he appears  in recital  and  with the leading or

chestras of the world.
Philippe Entremont was born on June 7, 1934 in Rheims, France
in the heart of  the champagne country. This may  account for his
exuberant  personality  and  ebullience  which  he  communicates  so
well to his audiences. His musical genius is inherited: his father is a
conductor; his mother, a Grand Prix pianist. She gave him his first
lessons at  six and  he completed his studies under the tutelage of
the eminent teacher Marguerite Long.
At 17, he  became First Laureate and Grand Prix winner at the
Marguerite LongJacques Thibaud International Concours, won the
Harriet Cohen Piano Medal, and launched his career as a concert

pianist.

PROGRAM NOTES

The C minor Sonata by Georg Philipp Teleman is the fourth of a set of
twelve Methodische Sonaten published in 1732 for flute and figured bass.
The continuo realization is by Richard Hervig and the Saxophone transcription was done by Himi.e Voxman.
Darius Milhaud originally wrote the Scaramouche Suite for two pianos
and later transcribed it for the saxophone. The original score was culled
from the stage music he had written for Moliete's play Le M edecin Volant.
The title Scaramouche was possibly given to this composition because the
play was originally presented in the Theater Scaramouche in 1937; although
it could have been derived from the nature of the music itself. (Scaramouche, a buffoon usually dressed in black, was a stock character in the
17th century farce Scaramuccia1.
Study for Alto Saxophone and Two Channel Tape was commissioned for
this recital and is the first composition for solo saxophone and tape.
The method of comJosition used by Karl Korte is now referred to as the
"Classical Studio Technique" of electronic music. In this case the sounds
on tape are existing musical sounds from the piano, which have been extensively altered through tape manipulation.
The A major Sonata, opus 120. is the crown of Schubert's early Sonatas
and was written during his stay at Steyr in 1819. Everything Schubert had
previously attempted he achieved in this perfect little work: variety, a
light touch and endearing melodies which add consistancy and interest to
each of the three movements.
Rondo for Saxophone and Rhythm is what Gunther Schuller would consider
to be "third stream" - the blending of European art music with American
jaz z. The first and recurring section of the compostion is one of changing
meter and shifting textures. The other sections are based on the jazz
) , waltz ( 3/4),a nd basso nova ( 7/4). Improvisation, one
forms of ballad ( 4/4)
of the basic elements in jazz, is a device used in the waltz section.
This Hindemith Sonata was written for alto horn in E ,but in parenthesis
the composer indicated: Waldhorn, Alt-Saxophon. While initially one might
argue that this is not a piece idiomatic to the saxophone, it is very much
suited to the instrument, for it shows the lyrical side of the saxophone and
the beauty of the sustained tones. The piano part is not only beautiful,
but also very formidable.

In 1847 J.A. Schmeller published a thirteenthcentu rymanuscriptcolleotlon of songs

which had originated in a  monastery in the foothills  of the Bavarian nlps, and to which

score  in  the  following  year ;  the  fir st performance was in F rankfurtamMain on
J une 8, 1937.

The  poems,  written  by wandering scholars, fu r the most part before the year 12 00,
include  love  songs,  d rinking songs, and songs in praise of the vagabond o rder  (all in–

fortune,  attacks  on  aimony, and various other topical poems.  Carl Orff has arranged
selections  from the  texts into three groups ; the invocation to fortune, which precedes
the fir s t group, i s  repeated at the very end of the work.
