PROGRAM NOTES
Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro” should be executed with elaborate
costumes, scenery and orchestra to completely do i t justice. We have
neither the time nor the resources at the moment for such a venture ;
so we decided to experiment.

Our young artists f unctionbestinafa rnilia r environment ; so we decided
to perform the work in the present, in contemporary dress allowing the
player to develop his or her character naturally and easily relate to an
acting situation without slighting the vocally ma jestic Mozartan line.
We have inserted a minimum of spoken dialogue to establish the con
tinuity of an ext remely complicated plot and enable us to reach the ma jor
arias, duets and ensembles with alacrity. Certain details of the story
are omitted purposely so that we all will have again the opportunity to
hear and enjoy the musical heart of the “Marriage of Figaro” in onethird
its usual performance time.

�P rogram of Le Marriage de Figaro — Beaumarchais
Figaro, steward at the castle of Aguas Frescas, has borrowed ten
thousand f rancs f rom Marceline, housekeeper of the same castle, and has
given her a note promising to repay the money at a certain time or to
marry her if he should default. Meanwhile, very much in love with
Suzanna, Countess Almaviva’s young chambermaid, he prepares to marry
her ; for the Count, himself enamored of young Suzanna, has favored this
marriage in the hope that a dowry he has promised to give her would en
able him to obtain from her in secret her yielding to the droit du seigneur,
a right that he had renounced for the benefit of his servants when he was
married. This little domestic intrigue is conducted on behalf of the Count
by the rather unscrupulous Basile, musicmaster of the castle. But the
young and virtuous Suzanne believes herself obliged to apprise her mis
tress and her betrothed of the Count’s gallant intentions, and the Countess,
Suzanne, and Figaro band together to foil the plans of the lord of the
manor. A small page, beloved by everyone at the castle but mischievous
and overheated, like all precocious lads of thirteen or fourteen, slips
saucily away from his master and by his liveliness and perpetual thought
lessness more than once involuntarily places obstacles in the way of the
Count’s progress, at the same time getting himself into hot water, which
leads to some very effective incidents inthe p iece . . . The Count, finally
perceiving that he is being made the victim, but unable to imagine how it
is being done, resolves upon vengeance by favoring Marceline’s claims.
Thus, desperate because he cannot make the young woman his mistress,
he tries to marry the old one to Figaro, who is disgusted by all this. But
at the moment when Almaviva believes himself avenged, when, as first
magistrate of Andalusia, he condemns Figaro to marry Marceline that day
or pay the ten thousand francs —which Figaro cannot possibly do –, it is
revealed that Marceline is Figaro’s unknown mother. This ruins all of the
Count’s plans and he cannot flatter himself that he is either fortunate or
avenged. During this time, the Countess, who has not given up the hope of
winning back her unfaithful spouse by catching him at fault, has arranged
with Suzanne that the latter pretend to grant the Count a rendezvous at last
in the garden, and that the wif e appear there in place of the mistress. But
an unforeseen incident apprises Figaro of the rendezvous granted by his
fiancée. Furious because be believes himself deceived, he hides at the ap
pointed spot, in order to surprise the Count with Suzanne. While he is
still raging, he is himself pleasantly surprised to discover that the whole
affair is only a game between the Countess and her chambermaid for the
purpose of fooling the Count ; he finally joins in the game goodhumoredly ;
Almaviva, convicted of unfaithfulness by his wife, throws himself at her
feet, begs her forgiveness, which she laughingly grants him, and Figaro
marries Suzanne.’

T he m os t popular c ategory of f olk songs throughout c entral and
southern Greec e i s the Klephtiko. Its highly expres sive m e lod y set
in f ree m eter truly r efle c ts the village pastoral way of lif e.
KALAMATIANOS HOROS
Kathleen Tyrrell, soprano
The Kalam atiano, danc ed in all regions of Gre ec e, i s a highly
spirited dance in whic h the leader displays his m any intricate steps
and ac robatic leaps . Both the danc e and m usic are set in 7 / 8 m eter
divided : 3 + 2 + 2. The title of this Kalam atiano song is Aegiotis sa
(Aegean Maiden ) and the text, in translation, begins :
“I pas s by your door, beautif ul Aegean m aiden,
And I pass by your neig hborhood
m aid en with your beauty spo ts and dark eyes,
Why are you always c ry ing ? ”
NIZAMIKOS
F rom the nothern regions of Greece i s the f olk danc e known as
the Niz am ikos . The m usic i s highly c haracteristic of m ost Greek
f olk m usic (A B f orm ) and the strongly played drum m ing patterns
are an integral part of both the m usic and the danc e.
�TRATA
The Trata danc e com es f rom the eastern shores of the Pelop onnesus
where s m all fis hing villages can be f ound in great numbers. The dance
represents the people pulling in the seines.

POGONISSIO
The northw estern area of Greec e i s an extrem ely w ealthy f olkloristic
region. Mu c h of the m usic is pentatonic in nature and the danc es tend to
quite stately, rhythm ic ally strong and danc ed at a relatively s lo w tem po.
This particular danc e alternates the c haracteristic s lo w tem po with the
m ore live ly tem po f ound in other parts of Greec e. In trans lation, the text
of the song begins :
“Let m e becom e a basil plant at your window
And I ’ ll rem ain a bachelor f or your pleasure. "
ZEIBEKIKOS HOROS
From the eastern Aegean Islands as f rom the Cyclades com es the ever
“ W
popular Zeibekiko danc e. Danced either in solo or in pair s, it is extrem ely
expres sive and m ost of the m ovem ents are im provised by the perf orm er(s ).
The m usic i s set to a 9 / 4 m eter (4 + 5) and the tem po i s s lo w .

BALLOS NISIOTIKOS
Though the Ballos i s a popular is land f olk danc e w ith a song text set in
a romantic idiom, only the m usic is presented here. Of all the folk m usic
of Greece, the Ballos is the m ost “Western'', The Ballos is a m ulti sec
tional com position and always set in m eter 2 / 4.
PENTOZALI
The Pentozali (literally : five s teps ) i s a highly traditional f olk dance
f rom the is land of Crete. Its tem po begins live ly and as the danc e prog res ses
the spirit becom es even livelier,
�KARAGOUN A

In habiting the broad plain s of Thes saly are the Karagounid hes . They
contin ue to retain their ric h cultu ral f olk tradition s, costum es, way of
lif e and espec ially their c haracteristi c songs and danc es . The tem po of
the dance altern ates f rom slow to f ast.
SOUSTA
The Sousta is especiall y com m on in the isl ands of the southern Ae gean
(nam ely : The Dodecanese and th e island of Crete), A live ly dance wit h s m all
intric ate steps, the Sousta i s a f avorite at w eddings, nam e days, and other
celebrations where villa ge people gather to hav e a day (or several day s) of
eating, d rinking and danc ing. The s ty le of this So usta is d efinite ly Cretan.

TSAMIKOS HOROS
In all of Greece no d ance is as h eroic and m as culine as th e Tsam iko..
Though the basic steps of the danc e are m aintained by the group o f dancers,
it i s the leader that i s f ree to displ ay abilities in the f orm of leaps, turns,
fli p s and other ac robatics. It i s in the Tsam iko also, that the prin cipal in
strum entalist sho ws his skill in the form of f ree im provisation .
