TH E  PLACE  OF   TH E  P IANOVIOL IN  SOi ATAS  I N  BE E THOVEN’S  L IFEWOR K
Beethoven published eight sonatas as works for piano “with
violin,” or  for  piano  “with  violin accompaniment.”  This  in  no
way  means,  however,  that  the  keyboard  is  the  predominating
instrument.  Although  Beethoven’s  own  instrument,  on  which
he  appeared  in  public  when  he  was  a  rising  young  musician

in  Vienna, was  the piano, he  understood  the  violin thoroughly.
In 1794  he  took  violin  lessons  from  Ignaz  Schuppanzigh, who
later became the celebrated leader of  the group that gave their
first hearings to Beethoven’s string quartets.  The  reason for the
appellation,  “piano  with  violin,”  was  a  simple  and  practical
one.  This  was  before  the  age  of  the  virtuoso  piano  recital.  A
co mmo n  practice  of  the  time  was  for  a  pianistcom poser  to

give  a  public  concert  with  the  collaboration  of  one  of  the
eminent  violinists  of  the  day.  Beethoven  made  such  appear
ances.

Op.  23  in  A  Minor

I n  the  fourth  sonata  in  A  minor,  Op.  23,  Beethoven  pro
duces  a  dazzling  experiment  of  ideas  in  the  classic  form,
w riting  m usic  of  constant  stops,  starts,  a n d  su rprises  which

flow  with  a  broadly  lyrical  slow  movement.
The  first  movement,  Presto  begins  with  a  stormy declama
tory  theme  from  the  piano,  hut  the  passion  quickly  subsides
with  the  transition  to  the  whimsical  second  theme.  The  ex
position  is  rounded  with  a  motif  much  like  its  opening.  This
leads  strikingly  into  the  recapitulation,  which  presents  the
exposition motifs  in  a  more familiar  shape, and  then  the  coda
occupies  itself  again  with  the freshly bo rn  lyrical  melody  that
comes out  of  the  development.
The  second  movement,  in  A  major,  is  marked  Andante
Scherzoso,  piu  Allegretto,  a  clue  to  the  seriousjoking  mood
of  the  entire  sonata,  Hero  rhythmic  invention  and  playfulness
take  over.  There  is  a  short  development  section,  with  a  re
flective  use  of  the  opening  syncopations,  and  then  a  lovely
ornamental  recapitulation  of  the  opening  material.  The  last
movement,  Allegro  molto,  starts  again  with  a  fiery,  dramatic
theme,  utterly  unlike  a  classic  rondo  theme  in  spirit.  It  re
appears  over  and  over,  in  the  same  key,  with  interspersed
episodes.  But  the  episodes  are  slow  and  reflective,  as  if
Beethoven  were  teasing  the  listener  with  a  constant  brake  on

the  momentum.

Op. 30  No. 3 in  G  Major
The  C  major  Sonata,  Op.  30  No.  3  shows  Beethoven’s

remarkable  creative  imagination.  The  first  movement,  Allegro
arsui, sonata  fomi  with  a  short  development  section,  and  the
concluding  rondo,  Allegro  vivace, are  characteristic  of  his  ex
pressive  powers.  They  flank  one  of  the  uniquely  shaped  and
lovely  slow  movements  of  this  period.  Marked  T em po  di
Minuetto,  ma  molto  moderato  e  grazioso,  it  is  of  course  no
minuet  but  a  flowing  melodious  invention  in  minuet  rhythm,
starting  in  E  flat,  and  somewhat  kin  to  the  dance  rhapsody
that  makes  up  the  slow  movement  of  the  Second  Symphony,
composed  the  same  year.

The  Kreutzer  Sonata
The  ninth  sonata,  Op.  47  in  A,  is  the  most  celebrated  of
all  violin  sonatas,  so  much  so  that  the  name  “Kreutzer”  itself
has  taken  on  mysterious  associations,  which  Tolstoi’s  novel
served  to  intensify.  As  Beethoven  explained,  the  sonata  was
written  for  a  thoroughly  capable  violinist  and  the  dedication
to  Rudolphe  Kreutzer  is  all  the  more  appropriate.
The  movement  begins  with  a  slow  introduction,  Adagio
Sostenuto,  in  A  major,  which  is  a  Presto.  The  introduction
is  never  repeated,  yet  its  influences  prevades  the  movement.

The  motif  of  a  rising  second  with  the  second  note  stressed,
heard  first  in  the  thirteenth  bar  of  the  introduction,  is  the
germinal  motif  givin g  birth  to  eve ry  theme  of  the  movement

proper.  For  the  second  movement,  Andante  con  Variazioni  in
F  major,  Beethoven  cream.  a  songful  theme  of  great  beauty;

then  in,  a  “pianistic”  variation.  a  “violinistic”  varia tion,  a
varia tion  in  minor,  a n d  a  re tu rn  to  ma jor,  with  a  d rawn  out,

lovoly  coda.  The  closing  movement,  Presto,  is  a  rondo  in
tarentelle  rhythm  with  a  sonataform  development.

Program  notes  paraphrased  from  S’orielgl,  Inc.  New  Yo r k .

P ulcinella  Suite

Stravinsky
)
(1882~

In  the  years  19171920,  the  director  of the Ballet Russe (Diaghileff)
conceived  the  idea of devising some new productions based upon music by
old  Italian  composers.  Instead  of  merely arranging and transcribing the
material chosen, Stravinsky reverted in  imagination to the environment of
the  Neopolitan  musicmakers  of  the  early  eighteenth  century.  Taking
material f rom five trio sonatas and a popular song as a point of departure,
Stravinsky  creates  a highly original  “portrait” of  Pergolesi, a distillation
of the spirit of the tunes, an enlivening and strengthening of  phrases rather
than arbitrary decoration.
Concerto  Champetre

Poulenc
(18991963)

T he  Concerto  Champetre,  or  “Rustic  Concerto” belongs to the com
poser’s  socalled  “elegant  period. ”  Composed  in  192728,  Poulenc
desc ribes  the work as “set in a very definite atmosphere of the eighteenth
century. ”  Not  surprising  when  we  realize  that the work was inspired by
Poulenc ’s f riendship with the late Wanda Landowska, and written originally
for harpsichord.
T he piano version (authorized later) can scarcely disguise the musical
alliance  between  the Baroque style and the surprises of modern harmony.
Siegf ried  Idyll

Wagner
(18131883)

Composed  in  November  of  1870, the Siegf ried Idyll was rehearsed in
utmost  secrecy  and  performed  early on Christmas morning on the stairs
of  the  Wagner  home  as  a  surprise  birthday  present to the composer’s
wif e, Cosima.
T he  Idyll  is a piece of  intensely quiet and purely instrumental music,
connected  with the opera only by a private undercurrent of  poetic illusion.
Concerto  in  G  Minor

SaintSaéns

(18351 921)

Anton  Rubinstein  wanted  to  conduct  a concert in Paris and asked his
good  f riend,  Camille  SaintSaens,  if  he  would  write  a concerto.  Three
weeks  later  the  work  was  performed,  the  composer  playing as soloist.
T he year was 1868.

T he G minor concerto  second of five piano concerti  is unquestion
ably  stamped  with  the  mark  of  a  master  musician, brillian organist and
piano  virtuoso ;  a man who, by reason of  his high standards in form, style
and  workmanship,  was  greatly  responsible  for  the  emergence of  French
instrumental  music  f rom  a subservience to the opera tradition during the
latter half of the 19th century.

QUARTET  IN  D MAJOR, K.  575   W.  A.  Mozart

T he  Qua rtet  in  D  Ma jor of  Moza rt (K. 57 5)  is one of the pro jected
set  of  six  (only  three  were  written)  dedicated to F rederick  William II
and  therefore  known  as  the  “ Berlin”  or  “King  of P russia ” qua rtets.
The  King  was  a  ’cellist  which  accounts  for  the impo rtance gi ven the
cello  in  their  fabric.  Cha racterized by a  richness and beau ty of sou nd
and  genial  melodic  inspiratio n  they  represen t  the  balance  among th e
elements  of  spontane ity,  tradition  and  science  which Mo za rt achieves
in his lat est work s.

QUARTET  IN  E FLAT  MAJOR, OP. 74   L. von  Beethoven

Beethove n ’s tenth quartet, Op. 74, wa s written i n 1 809 and p ublished
in  1810.  Of  all  the qua rtets, it pe r ha ps conve ys the gr eatest be auty of
shee r  sonority.  T he  magical  spacing  of  the  pa rts  in the lab ryinthine
int roduction  and  the  a rpeggios  — bowed  and  plucked —  of  the Allegro
(which gi ve the wo rk its nic kname, t he “Ha rp”) a re all dis posed in such
a  way  that  the  physical  beauty  of the sound beco mes (as  is not always
the  case  with  Beethove n)  an  unusually  affective  dimensio n.  This is

especiall y true of  the Adagio where the considerable use of subdominant
ha rmonies contribut es to the exalted serenit y of the movement.  The form
is strophic— a Lied, or aria of three stanzas—each repeat being va ried,
and,  something  exceptional,  the  principal  melody  (I  violin)  cast each
time an octave lower so tha t the fina l verse ca n make use of the ea rnest

ent reaty of t he violin ’s lowest st r ing.
T he Presto  (not actua lly ma r ked”Sche r zo ”) is built upon the  famous
   .)  which ha s al ready a ppea red a t the cod a of the fi r s t
“V ”  motive  ( 7
Allegro.  The  key (C m inor) and the moti ve inevit ably reca lls the F ifth
Symphony  (Op. 67) a nd the rel ationship between the “Sche rzo” and  “T rio”
certainly  suggests  a simila r r hythmica l  juxtaposi tion in the Scherz o of
the Ninth .
The  theme  of  t h e  Allegret to  con  Variz ioni  is  taken f rom a Sy m
phony  (in  C)  by  Haydn.  T he  movemen t,  though  genial, is  relative ly
slight.  It  should  be  rega rded  as  an  elegant,  gracious epilogue added
like  a  program  encore,  the t rue force of the pi ece having expend ed i t

self  in  the  preceding  P resto –which,  be  it  again  noted, Beethoven did
not  mark “Sc herzo. "

QUARTET  IN  F MAJOR  Maurice Ravel

The single quarte t of  Ravel, which dates from the year 1902, is one
of  the  masterpieces  of  French  chamber  music.  Dedicated to Ravel ’ s
teacher,  Gabriel Fauré, it e xtends the idiom of that composer with Ra
vel ’s  unique  fla i r  for  color  and  effect.  Essentia lly  classic i n form
F rance  remains  the  home  of  classicism    it exploits the full  range of

inst rumental  vi rtuosity  without  a ny t race of a r rant disp lay ; eve rything
is subordinate to expressive intention, marked by prec ision and refine
ment and by an extraordina rily beau tif ul aesthe tic surfa ce.
