Text Translation for Cantata No. 82
“lch habe genug ”
1. Aria
I have now enough,
I have now my Savior, the hope of the faithful
Within my desiring embrace now enfolded;
l have now enough!

On him have I gazed,
My faith now hath Jesus impressed on my
heart;
I would now, today yet, with gladness
Make hence my departure.
2. Recit.
l have now enough. =
My hope is this alone,
That Jesus might belong to me and I to him.
In faith I hold to him,
For I, too, see with Simeon
The gladness of that life beyond.
Let us in this man’s burden join!
Ah! Would that from the bondage of my body

The Lord might free me.
Ah! My departure, were it here,
With joy I’d say to thee, O world:
I have now enough.

3. Aria
Slumber now, ye eyes so weary,
Fall in soft and calm repose!
World, I dwell no longer here.
Since I have no share in thee
Which my soul could offer comfort.
Here I must with sorrow reckon,
But yet. there, there 1 shall witness
Sweet repose and quiet rest.

4. Recit.

My God! When comes that blessed “Now!”
When I in peace shall walk forever
Both in the sand o f earth’s own coolness

And there within thy bosom rest?
My parting is achieved.
O world, good night!

5. Aria
Rejoicing do I greet my death,
Ah, would that it had come already.
I’ll escape then all the woe
Which doth here in the world
confine me.

ABOUT T H E MUSIC

“Not ‘brook ’ (Bach) but ‘sea ’ should he be called – because of his infinite,
inexhaustible rich ness in tonecombinations and harmonies "
 Ludwig van Beethoven

written by Timothy Perry

No matter how many beautiful and profound works we encounter,

study or perform, all musicians stand in humility before t he achievements of
Johann Sebastian Bach. If the sheer staggering quantity and quality of his oeuvre
were not enough, Bach’s depth of passion, the balance of form and content, and
his ability to create a fullyformed microcosm of human emotions from any
instrument, ensemble, or voice these strike every m usician worthy of the name
into stunned awe. This evening’s musical celebration of Bach offers a diverse,
albeit tiny, handful from a treasurechest laden with inestimable gems.

I
_\

The fourteen concertos for harpsichord, strings and continuo all date
from the last period of Bach’s term as Director of the Collegium Musicum in
Leipzig (173540). All are now believed to be transcriptions from concerti
composed for other instruments, a lthough many of these original versions are

now lost to us. T he source of the o uter movements for tonight ’s Concerto in F
minor is a lost oboe concerto in g m inor. Although the shortest of the concerti, it
is the most popular today, owing to its transcendently beautiful Adagio middle

“We ‘re all plodders compared to him. " Robert Schumann

movement, w hose singing tone has ma d e it a favorite o f pianists since t he mid

nineteenth century. (The Adagio was further recycled as the openingmovement
Sinfonia to Canta ta 1 56 ‘I stand with o ne foot in the gra ve'). The first movement
is a taut, restless affair in which the rhythmic germ of the movement contends
between onbeat accentuation (in the bass) and offbeats (in treble). The
orchestral tuttis a re likewise played o ff a gainst the predom inant sextuplets o f the
solo part, doubtless reworked and elaborated by Bach from their original. The
finale employs a similarly subtle juxtaposition of offbeat accent and hemiola to
keep the music in a state of muscular imbalance which is only brought back into
its normal 3/8 accentuation at the point of cadence.

Cantata 82 is one of a mere handful of works for solo voice based on
ltalian models of Scarlatti and Handel. These few Bach himself titled ‘cantatas ’:
the others, when named at all, Bach called ‘concerti ’. The devotional text
derives from St. Luke ’s account of Simeon’s encounter with the baby Jesus as
Mary brings him to the temple. Th e meeting fulfills the promise of t he Holy
Spirit and frees Simeon for death in the famous nunc demittis “Lord, now lettest
thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word.” The sense of spiritual
fulfillment is echoed in the repetitions of text on “1 have now enough’ and ‘With
joy’ which bind the movements toget her. The obbligato oboe is here less a
moumful presenc e than one of warmth and comfort. The first two arias have
overtones o f lullaby rhythms, the first restless and yearning and the second
awaiting a peace ful departure from earthly life. The final movement, again in
minor but with strong dance overtones, emphasizes the believer’s joyous
cagerness for the blessed world which is soon to come.

Study Bach! There you will find everything! Johannes Brahms
>

The six suites for solo cello, like the more spectacularly written six
sonatapartitas for solo violin, date from Bach ’s tenure in Cothe n (around 1720).
This was a period in which many instrumental masterpieces like the
Brandenburg Concerti and the first Orchestral Suite were composed. Many
musicologists have remarked upon the relatively more spare, even ‘m inimalist’
texture of the cello suites as compared to the violin partitas. Whether this
stemmed from a conscious desire by Bach to write in a more succinct way, or
was driven by the need to accommodate the acoustics and/or playing techniques
of the cellos of the period is unclear ; the result, though, is spectacularly
effective. Bach employs the standard suite form of his day, namely a free
prelude followed by four dances (a llemande, courant, sarabande and gigue). In
each suite Bach i nserts a ‘new’ dance after the sarabande, in this case a pair of
Minuets. The magic of these works is how Bach manages to extract a balance of
melody, harmony and counterpoint from the musical thread o f single line.

Unlike many other genres, whose composition was confined to one or
another period of his residence and employment, the works for organ cover
virtually the entire gamut of Bach’s composing li fe. While the majority were
composed while Bach was court organist for Duke Wilhelm in Weimar between
1708 and 1717, the majestic Passacaglia and Fugue in c minor may date back to
Bach'’s earlier work in Arnstadt (1 7031707). The work shows the influence of
Danish organist Dietrich Buxtehude who himself composed a number of
noteworthy passacaglia and whose playing Bach walked 200 miles to hear in
concert in Liibeck. The thematic ground borrows from a passacaglia theme by a
French composer André Raison. Bach’s theme and the countersubject he
derived from it flower through so me twenty variations before the culminating
fugue, a compositional tour de force, weaving all the various thematic threads
into a stupendous climax worthy of Bach the greatest organ virtuoso of his age.

At last, this is som ething from which I can learn!
 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

l

l

It is no surprise that Bach borrowed constantly from himself, recycling
works for other occasions in which he felt the y could do justice to the spirit of
the event. Thus the Sinfonia from Cantata 29, which premiered for the
inauguration of the Leipzig town council in 1731, made use of the opening
movement of the E major violin partita (BWV 1006). No one does ‘brilliant’
better than Bach, as he here further bumishcs the organ’s solo part with the
addition of three clarini and timpani. There are few more dazzling threeminute

cpisodes in all o f music. Enjoy!

PROGRAM NOTES
by Elizabeth Bartlett

Greatly renowned Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi was born in
Venice on March 4, 1678. Vivaldi was trained for the priesthood and
ordained in 1703, but after claiming poor health was appointed maestro
di violino at the Ospedale della Pieta, one of the Venetian girls’
orphanages. Although Vivaldi’s music is popular today, when he died in
Vienna, Austria on July 28, 1741, his music was quickly forgotten. A
nineteenth century renewal of interest in Vivaldi’s music brought about
the revival of some the composer’s works. The revival continued into
the twentieth century and by the end of it, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons
became one of the most popular ‘classical’ pieces of all time, topping the
charts year after year.
Originally, Vivaldi composed a total ten sonatas for violoncello
and basso continuo of which one is completely lost. Of the remaining,
three exist in manuscript form. Two of them, the a minor, RV 44, and
the Eflat, RV 39, are preserved in the Conservatory Library in Naples,
and one in g minor, RV 42 in the Castle Library in Wiesentheid in
Germany. The other six were printed in a contemporary French edition;
the original manuscript is in the National Library of Paris. The
manuscript consists of 42 pages on which the cello part and the bass (not
figured) are written neatly and plainly on tw o staves. All six sonatas
follow the same overall form, four movements (Largo, Allego, Largo,
Allegro). A certain relationship exists between these cello sonatas with
their four movements and the old sonata de chiesa (church sonatas) of
the earlier Baroque style. These sonatas were possibly written many
years before their actual date of publication in 1740 for and performed

~ by Vivaldi’s students at the Pieta orphanage in Venice.

Giovanni Bottesini, born December 22, 1821, was not only among
the most famous Italian double bass players of his time, but was also a
conductor of some distinction and a composer. He conducted the first
performance of Verdi’s opera Aida in Cairo in 1871 and won success
with some, at least, o f his own ten operas. Known to some as the
Paganini of the double bass, he significantly extended the technical
possibilities of the instrument. Bottesini’s compositions include a
number of double bass concertos, some for double bass and piano, as
well as works for solo violin and double bass and for two double basses.
His Metodo completo per contrabasso is an important addition to the
pedagogical literature o f the instrument.
Bottesini ’s original
compositions and transcriptions of wellknown melodies broaden music

for the double bass past before thought unimaginable capabilities of
musical expression. His Elegy demonstrates his broad palette of
fascinating tone colors, the cantabile line and the possibilities of musical
expression to unheard of heights on the double bass.

Arthur Olaf Andersen, born January 30, 1880, was a music
educator and administrator, music theorist and composer. Andersen was

Head of the Department of Music Theory at the American Conservatory
of Music in Chicago from 1908 to 1929, and Dean and Head of the
Theory Department at University of Arizona from 1929 to 1934. He
published many books including: First Forty Lessons in Harmony
(1923) and Practical Orchestration (1929), along with numerous music
theory books and compositions. Sonatina (1942) is a work with the
formal characteristics of a sonata but on a smaller scale. Andersen’s

Sonatina, although written in the 20” century, possesses characteristics
from the Classical period. The first movement, Allegro, is in sonata
form. The lively first theme in the exposition is in the key of G major,
proceeds to a very short development in g minor. The recapitulation, in

the original key, moves to a coda with a strong finish on the tonic chord.
The second movement, Andante, is very short and in ternary form. The

final movement is a lively Rondo. The principal section is in the key of
G major alternates with two subsidiary sections; the first one being in the
key of C major, the second subsidiary section is in the key of b minor.

As a young boy, Russian composer Reinhold Gliere, born January
1 1, 1875, studied violin, theory and composition. From 19201941 he
was professor of composition at the Moscow Conservatory. Among his

pupils” were Prokofiev, Miaskovsky, and Khachaturian.

His

compositions, generally nationalistic with romantic and impressionistic

elements, show the influence of Russian folk melodies that he collected
in Europe and Asia. His bestknown works are the ballet The Red Poppy
(1927) and his Third Symphony (Ilya Mourometz, 19091911). Russian
Sailor ’s Dance, which comes from the ballet The Red Poppy, is a fast
moving and exciting piece that is a perfect intensity builder. As the

instrumentalist plays through the piece the tempo builds making for an
exciting conclusion. This arrangement by George Vance takes a familiar
tune and makes it exciting to perform.

ABOUT THE MUSIC
Adagio in E-flat D. 897, for Piano Trio "Notturno"
Some time during the winter of 1822-23 Schubert became seriously ill
with the symptoms of syphilis, tantamount to a death sentence in those
days. And though there were extended periods of remission, for the
remaining six years of his life his health was permanently undermined. It
is, of course, dangerous to draw too close a parallel between an artist's
life and work. Even so, it is hard to deny that much of Schubert's music
from the last years, Winterreise, the late string quartets and piano
sonatas, the C Major String Quintet is suffused with a sense of
evanescence, an awareness of impending doom. Yet amid this darkening
inner landscape, the hedonistic, characteristically Viennese spirit of
earlier works like the Trout Quintet is never entirely lost. It permeates
the lyrically exuberant Piano Trio in B-flat probably composed during
the. late summer or autumn of 1827, a time when Schubert was also
preoccupied with the last twelve songs of Winterreise.

Conjecture surrounds the B-flat Trio, as it does so many of Schubert's
works. There is no surviving manuscript and therefore no exact
dating and the composer never mentioned the work in his
correspondence with publishers. But circumstantial evidence suggests
that it was written shortly before the Trio in E-flat, D. 929, whose
autograph bears the date November 1827. An investigation of the paper
type used for the autograph score of the Notturno D. 897, long accepted
as the original, discarded slow movement for the B-flat Trio, has
revealed that it is identical with the paper used in the autumn of 1827 for
the E-flat Trio and the finished copy of Winterreise.
If the Notturno (as titled by the publisher Diabelli) was indeed the
original slow movement of the B-flat Trio, we can only guess at
Schubert's reasons for jettisoning it. But while it makes a less ready
appeal than the Andante that replaced it, it uncannily prefigures the
Adagio of the C Major String Quintet, composed the following autumn.
The two movements realize consummately the vein of timeless,
contemplative ecstasy. Like the Quintet's Adagio, the Notturno presents .
a mesmerically sustained melody in close harmony in the inner voices
(violin and cello) against a plucked accompaniment in the treble and
bass, with the piano doing a fair imitation of a harp. And as in the
Quintet the contrasting central section moves to the key of the
Neapolitan second, a semitone above the tonic: E-flat to E Major.
Finally, like that in the Quintet, the coda contains a final harmonic
shudder (with a sudden crescendo) just before the closing bars.
by Richard Wigmore

Grand Quintet in B-Flat, Op. 34
Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) was a generous contributor to the
repertory of the solo clarinet through his deep and abiding friendship
with the Munich clarinetist Heinrich Baermann. In addition to tonight's
Quintet, Weber completed two concerti, a concertino, a set of variations
and the Grand Duo Concertante. Weber toured Europe as Baermann' s
accompanist, and his complete familiarity with the possibilities of the
developing instrument are echoed in the rapidity with which the clarinet
works were composed. The Concertino was written in three days, the
Variations were written on the morning of its premiere (!), and the
splendid Quintet, although written over a period of four years ( 1811-15),
occupied probably not more than two weeks of the busy composer's
time. The work is clearly intended first and foremost as a tour de force
for the solo clarinet, although the string writing is well conceived and
effective. The opening allegro is a sturdy, sunny march whose jaunty
dotted rhythms would find an echo a century later in Bela Bartok's
Contrasts. Weber's natural gifts as an opera composer are put to use in
the aria-like second movement fantasia, culminating in two extended
chromatic scales at the outer dynamic edges of possibility. The third
movement Capriccio, while listed as 'Menuetto', is very much a
Beethoven-style scherzo with its 3/4 time constantly being re-organized
into 3/8 and 3/2 structures, its complexity balanced by a sweetly naïve
trio. The finale, a galloping presto in quick 2/4 is all flash, dash and
panache in which even the improved modern clarinet is pushed to the
edges of fleet-fingered virtuosity- but all in good fun.
By Timothy Perry

Brahms Piano Quartet in A, Opus 26
The Brahms Piano quartet Opus 26 was published in 1862, along with
the G Minor Quartet, just as the young Brahms was passed over for an
appointment to become director of the Hamburg Philharmonic Society.
He moved to Vienna and it received its first performance there. It is less
often played than its partner, the G Minor Quartet or indeed, the later C
Minor Quartet. This may be related to the fact that it is longer, and a
little less "obvious" in design and temperament than either of the other
two quartets.

Although the drama and deft use of short motives which Brahms derived
from his study of the works of Beethoven are ever-present, the dolcc
parts owe more to Schubert in terms of the lighter, more lyrical quality of
the music. This is particularly obvious in his piano writing.

The Poco Adagio is the heart of this work. The exquisite use of offset
rhythm to convey a beautiful melody, which characterizes so many of the
composer's slow movements, is used to great effect here. More ominous
material is introduced, but he returns to the lovely melody, ending the
movement as atmospherically as it was begun.
The Allegro finale, like the wild Gypsy Rondo of the G Minor
Quartet, has energetic Zigeuner elements. This is particularly evident in
the way the piano chords are syncopated against the strings in the very
opening. Brahms quotes freely from his other movements and introduces
more thematic material before he brings the work to close with one of his
trademark grand symphonic finales.
