TRATA
In parts of Greece, especially along the coastline of the Peloponnesus,
certain dances are highly traditional. The dance, literally meaning the
fisherman's net, reflects the motions of "pulling-in the nets." The Trata
is traditionally danced only by women. The music is in 4/ 4 meter.
Stephanie Zunno - lead dancer

ZONARADHIKO
The Zonaradhiko dance is from the eastern part of the region Thrace.
In this facinating region, people still retain their village customs, costumes,
and rich folk traditions.
The dance, named after the beautiful belts of
Thrace (as can be seen on the dancers), is traditionally performed only by
women.

PAIDOUSKA
Also from the region of Thrace, the Paidouska contains many small
and intricate dance steps. Though it resembles the Bulgarian Paidouska,
this version is definitely Greek.

SYR TOS HOROS
A very common dance in all parts of Greece is the Syrto. It is set
in 4/4 (or 2/4) meter and generally the tempo is lively. In this particular
Syrto, the mode is diatonic and the melodic style characterizes the region
of Roumeli. Many dance tunes, such as this Syrto, are strictly instrumental.

BALLOS
The music of the Aegean Islands tends to be rather lively and "lighthearted" in character. Of all the Greek dances found on the various islands,
the Ballas is considered the most common. It is a multi-sectional composition, set in a lively 2/4 meter,
and commonly played strictly instrumentally.
This Ballas is well-known throughout the Aegean.

PENTOZALI
Though the island of Crete is located in the southern Aegean, Cretan
traditions such as music, dances, instruments, language, etc. can be found
on no other Greek island. The Pehtozali is definitely Cretan. Though the
music is quite repetitive, the dance offers many opportunities to display
the leaps, turns, and intricate dance-steps so c ommonly found on Crete.
The Pentozali is traditionally performed by m en.

TSAMIKOS HOROS
In all of Greece, there is no folk danc e more h eroi c in character than
the Tsamiko. The lead-dancer is free to perform the danc e in his own
particular style while the remaining dancers maintain the basic steps of the
dance. Instrumentally, the Tsamiko offers the lead instrumentalist a unique
opportunity to display his improvisatory abilities · in the section of the Tsamiko
known as "sto dopo!'

INTERMIS S ION

KERKYRAIKOS HOROS
This music comes from the island of Kerkyra (in English it is known
as Corfu). You will readily hear that West e rn musi cal traditions have very
greatly influenced this music. The music is in 2/ 4 meter and performed
on the instrument known as the kanoun (or ka nonaki).
Lorelei Beer - Kanoun

POGONNISIO
Another characteristic dance from Epirus is the Pogonissio. The dan c e
is in two parts: the first being rather slow an d stat e l y , _while the second

SOUSTA
One of the liveliest folk dances of Crete is the Sousta. The steps
are short and highly intricate. The dance begins at a lively tempo and
becomes even livelier.

SKYRIANOS HOROS
In many regions of Greece, a distinct style is developed for a certain
folk dance. For example, on the island of Skyros (located in the North
Aegean), the Syrto is performed in a typical manner. The music is lively,
gay, and in meter 2/4.

SYRTAKI
A presentation of songs and dances of Greece would not be complete
without the Syrtaki. Though it properly belongs to the popular tradition,
it nevertheless has taken Greece by storm; everyone is dancing the Syrtaki.
The style is Greek but the harmonies are very Western. The dance begins
slowly, with highly stylized steps; and is brought to a close with a lively
dance called the Has sapiko.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

We are greatly indebted to The American Civic Association,
Binghamton, New York, for their willingness to loan us the Greek
Foustanella costumes.
Our sincerest and warmest thanks go to Mrs. Lambro u and her
daughter, Aliki, of Athens, Greece.
Because of their genuine love for
the many traditions of their small island of Skyros, and for their sincere
interest in our Study Program of Greek Folk Music and Dance here at
Harpur, they so kindly made it possible to bring to America (for the
first time) authentic folk costumes from the island of Skyros.
We would also like to acknowledge the Greek Community of the
Triple-Cities and their organizations.
