Smoking is permitted in the hallways, but not in the theater. �P ulcinella Suite Stravinsky ) (1882~ In the years 19171920, the director of the Ballet Russe (Diaghileﬀ) conceived the idea of devising some new productions based upon music by old Italian composers. Instead of merely arranging and transcribing the material chosen, Stravinsky reverted in imagination to the environment of the Neopolitan musicmakers of the early eighteenth century. Taking material f rom ﬁve trio sonatas and a popular song as a point of departure, Stravinsky creates a highly original “portrait” of Pergolesi, a distillation of the spirit of the tunes, an enlivening and strengthening of phrases rather than arbitrary decoration. Concerto Champetre Poulenc (18991963) T he Concerto Champetre, or “Rustic Concerto” belongs to the com poser’s socalled “elegant period. ” Composed in 192728, Poulenc desc ribes the work as “set in a very deﬁnite atmosphere of the eighteenth century. ” Not surprising when we realize that the work was inspired by Poulenc ’s f riendship with the late Wanda Landowska, and written originally for harpsichord. T he piano version (authorized later) can scarcely disguise the musical alliance between the Baroque style and the surprises of modern harmony. Siegf ried Idyll Wagner (18131883) Composed in November of 1870, the Siegf ried Idyll was rehearsed in utmost secrecy and performed early on Christmas morning on the stairs of the Wagner home as a surprise birthday present to the composer’s wif e, Cosima. T he Idyll is a piece of intensely quiet and purely instrumental music, connected with the opera only by a private undercurrent of poetic illusion. Concerto in G Minor SaintSaéns (18351 921) Anton Rubinstein wanted to conduct a concert in Paris and asked his good f riend, Camille SaintSaens, if he would write a concerto. Three weeks later the work was performed, the composer playing as soloist. T he year was 1868. The celebrated Austrian theater director <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/libraries/about/special-collections/research-and-collections/reinhardt/">Max Reinhardt</a>, recognized in America primarily for his elaborate productions of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Franz Werfel’s The Eternal Road, and Karl Vollmoeller’s The Miracle, was born in 1873 at Baden near Vienna, Austria and died in New York City in 1943. Reinhardt’s illustrious career takes on added significance because it coincides with a major shift in the evolution of the modern theater: the ascendancy of the director as the key figure in theatrical production. Reinhardt’s reputation in international theater history is secured by the leading role he played in this transformation, as well as by his innovative use of new theater technology and endless experimentation with theater spaces and locales, which together redefined traditional relationships between actor and audience toward a new participatory theater. What is a prompt book? The prompt book is a master copy of the production script and contains a wealth of instructions and information alongside the basic text of the play. As well as the actors’ lines, you will often see cues for music, movement, light, and many other aspects of stage business. It may also contain sketches of how a piece of staging is supposed to look, or which costume a character should wear in a scene. Why are his important? Reinhardt’s directorial prompt books reflect the ways in which he made plays by major playwrights, including Ibsen, Shakespeare and Wilder, his own. The prompt books contain notations denoting changes in the script, actor moves and technical cues, instructions on how sound, props and scenery were used, and stage drawings. They help us to reconstruct Reinhardt’s techniques and directions in productions. With the exception of the ﬁrst piece, each of these songs are originally from operas. “Intorno all’idol mio” is from the opera Orontea, which premiered in 1656. Orontea, the Queen of Egypt sings to her secret love, Alindoro, a common painter, after he has fainted. “Che ﬁero costume,” from the opera Ereocle e Polinice, opened in 1675. It tells the Greek story of Oedipus’ twin sons. This arietta, one of 90 arias from the opera, is a rant about the unhappiness caused by Cupid and the irony that he is still a suckling babe. “Vaghe stelle” is from the opera Erismena. It opened in 1655 in Venice. A manuscript of an English version of the opera from the 1670‘s makes it the earliest known opera written in English. In January 2009, Bodleian Library of Oxford University announced the acquisition of the earliest surviving score of Erismena purchased from a private collection. The translation given here is from this English version. Cinq mélodies populaires Grecques (Five Popular Greek Melodies) These ﬁve songs, set in 1907, are authentic Greek folk songs harmonized by Ravel. From the fourth song, a Ientisk is a small evergreen shmb found all over Greece. It is cultivated for its resin but the leaves and fruit are also used for various uses from cooking to lamp oil. ' �ABOUT THE PERFORMERS Jennifer Groves Jennifer Lee Groves, lyric soprano, has been praised for her “beautiful phrases and soft high notes” (Broome Art Mirror) in her recent role as Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi with Tri Cities Opera, where she is currently a resident artist. She is also ﬁnishing her Masters of Music in Opera at Binghamton University. Other roles with TriCities Opera include Gianetta (L’elisir d’amore), Barbarina (Le nozze di Figaro), Sandman/Dew Fairy (Hansel and Gretel), Miss Pinkerton (The Old Maid and the Thief), Page (Amahl and the Night Visitors), and Page (Rigoletto). She received her Bachelors in Vocal Performance from SUNY Geneseo where she studied with William Leyerle. Currently she studies with soprano Mary Burgess and TCO Artistic Directors Peter Sicilian and Duane Skrabalak. This summer she will be in Colorado making her Crested Butte Music Festival debut as a young artist singing Musetta in La Bohéme, in addition to participating in a series of opera scenes and concerts. Ms. Groves is a native of Pawling, NY. Margaret Reitz Pej Reitz, pianist, is a native of the Binghamton Area. She received her Bachelor and Master o f Music degrees in piano performance with accompanying emphasis. She attended Boston University, New England Conservatory and Binghamton University. She has studied piano with Jean Casadesus, Victor Rosenbaum, Seymour Fink and Walter Ponce and accompanying with Allen Rogers. She has accompanied throughout the United States, in England, South America, Spain and at th e American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. She was a winner of the Artistic Ambassadors Program by the United States Information Agency in partnership with the John F. Kennedy Center for the performing arts. She has been on the faculty at Binghamton University since 1991 and Ithaca College School of Music since 1999. She is on the Executive Board of the New York District MTNA organization.
